I had a 5c/10c family game with oldies that played more like a limit game, but as the younger people in the family grew up and was of drinking age the game turned into more of a wild west multiple buy in type game. For example I remember my father-in-law losing 60 bucks one night. It's not that easy to lose $60 in a 5c/10c game!

I haven't answered the poll because it also depends on buy-in. I'd rather play a deep .05/.10 game than a shallow .10/.20 game.

I agree with @Schmendr1ck , we are missing a key data point. I think the BB should be set at the amount your average player is comfortable losing divided by 300-400. Some hosts would divide by more to have an even deeper game.

I figure a reasonably deep game has a max buy in of 80-150x the big blind. Others prefer even deeper games of 200x or more which is fine too.

But you want to set the stakes a point where players will comfortably go in at least 2-3 times. One buy in and done stakes are too high and will lead to your games ending early.

So if you players are willing to lose 30 in a night I think you set the blinds at 0.05-0.10 with a 10 max buy in. If they are willing to lose 50- 60, go ahead and think about doing 0.10-0.20 or 0.25-0.25 blinds with a 20 max buy in.

These would be my suggestions for targing a 80-150x big blind games. If you want deeper, adjust accordingly, but I feel this is key information missing from this thread.

With my set here or here , I mainly host NL10 (10c-10c) or NL20 (10c-20c).

Si between 2 games, I'll check other criteria :
1) Who is playing ? - at these stakes, I'm there to have a good moment
2) How deep is the buyin ? - whatever the stakes, I prefer having a buyin of 100BB max

I played .05 /.10 in my college days. Good times. More recently, the only micros I've played have been .10/.25 or ante dealer's choice. As far as the poll, what's the crowd is like is a much more important consideration than the stakes.

What does a $20 starting stack look like?

My breakdown covers 8 players NL10 (10c-10c), NL20 (10c-20c) and NL50 (50c-50c).
I also use it for limit games (HORSE) :
20c - 50c (table ante in stud = 20c and SB/bring-in = 10c)
50c - 1 (table ante in stud = 50c and SB/bring-in = 20c)
1 - 2 (table ante in stud = 1 and SB/bring-in = 50c)

600 chips :
160 x 0.10
80 x 0.50
160 x 1
160 x 5
40 x 20

A starting stack of NL20 is 20 x 10c / 10 x 50c / 13 x 1.

To have the same starting stacks for 10 players, I'd go with :

200 x 10c
100 x 50c
200 x 1
200 x 5
100 x 20 (having a rack of 20 or 25 allows you to add NL100 to your covered games if needed)

If you don't plan to go above NL20, you can probably go with :

200 x 10c (100 could also work)
100 x 50c
200 x 1
200 x 5 (100 could also work)

For for NL20 full ring between 500 and 700 chips is enough.

I also use the 0.10-0.50-1 breakdown (see free river club set in my signature)

I think 15/5/x of 0.10/0.50/1 is good for NL. 15*0.10 and 5*0.50 is 4, just add the singles you need for 10 or 20. Since my micro game features limit, I will actually do 30/6/x to get extra dimes in play.
