Having a birthday party poker game for my son and myself Friday evening. Start at 7:00, have to be done by 11:00. I'm expecting 12-16 players. Most of the field will be pretty casual. We have to be done by 11:00 I don't mind the 2x jumps here and there. I think I'd rather have a few big jumps, rather than reduce starting stacks or shorten levels, but I'm open to advice.

What would you change?

$10 buy-in, 1 rebuy in the first hour, T10,000 starting stacks, 20 minute levels.

Wow Ledge, I'm honored someone would think that.

Beaker, time is really not on your side here. I like the deep stack (200 BB), but it looks like you wouldn't even get through round 11 with the time you have. The more casual players, the less likely you are average 2 minutes a hand. My calculations are based on that, but if the time per hand stretches, it throws off the calculations somewhat.

As a tournament, it's going to be pretty choppy with blind increases from 1.33x to 2x. You might be fairly likely to be finished after round 10 with only 12 players, but not certainly, and that's without a rebuy. I'd consider not doing the rebuy for the time you've got. So here are some possible things you could try.
  1. If you went to 18 minute blinds, and no rebuy, I think you would be done by round 12, but that would be more certain if you made that blind at least 8,000 instead of 6,000. Just when you near the end, your structure slows down, which might mean you aren't done.
  2. If you went to 16 minute blinds, you should be done without rebuys, and most likely with rebuys. The quality of the tournament is likely to suffer though if you have 15-16 players.
Here is a structure I'd consider, and it's 18 minute blinds, no rebuys. Instead of coloring up after round 3, you go to round 4. Your next color up would come after round 9. It should be done by the end of round 12, but just in case, you still have time for round 13, where it would end amost every time. After round 2, blind increases average 58.1%, and run from 50-67%, so it should be a fairly smooth tournament.

If you really wanted rebuys, you could use this structure but start with only 5,000, and use 20 minute blinds. It's not deep stacked and has an aggressive blind schedule. I think 10K start, 18 min blinds would be a better tournament, but it would give you a chance to do 20 minute blinds and rebuys.

I'd love to see what @BGinGA suggests.

Your structure has a quite a few jumps that vary quite a bit. When I look at it I see some 100% jumps interspersed that chop your players stack in half. Sometimes back to back.

Assumptions:
12 Players
4 Re-Entries
T10,000 Stacks
20 minute levels

Here's a proposed structure with similar assumptions. It's got 15 minute levels, trading shorter levels for much smoother and consistent jumps which should end at or earlier than 11:15pm. Might go a touch longer with 16 players. Things start off a little slower on average with this structure, and then speed up as we get closer to 11pm.

In your case, I'd run a 59% average increase event with T10K starting stacks (100BB), re-buys for the first hour, and 20-minute blind levels:

lvl sb bb
L1 50 100
L2 75 150
L3 125 250
remove T25 chips, end re-buys
L4 200 400
L5 300 600
L6 500 1000
L7 800 1600
L8 1200 2400
remove T100/T500 chips
L9 2000 4000
L10 3000 6000
L11 5000 10000 ** EOT
L12 8000 16000
L13 12000 24000
L14 20000 40000

With 16 players and re-buys, the event will typically end no later than L11 (4:00 hours total including two 10-minute color-up breaks), with plenty of opportunity for meaningful play in a short 4-hour window. You won't miss the 25/50 level.
