Cash Game $20 vs $25 chip for cash games (1 Viewer)

I'm very happy I went with $20's for my CPC set. So much easier to make change in limit games.

I prefer $20's for the cash game set. No worries about confusing them with the 25s for the tourney set (plus I love my $20 relabeled chips)

Uhhh...$400 is a prime number? ;) And a rack of $20s is an OCD-approved stack of $100s.... :whistling:

Yeah I still prefer $20 over all, my ocd is weird. In all honestly there is no point that would sway me either way if I was buying a set of chips/playing in a game with either.

My new cash set will have $20s. When we play cash rebuys are almost always in multiples of $20. Depending on what the table looks like my plan is to give anyone rebuying a $20 plaque or four $5s that they can go exchange from the chip leader. I'd feel differently if guys were peeling $50s or $100s off their cash rolls but $20 in with a $20 rebuy is a big night for most. That makes a $25 chip/plaque impractical.

I like the pros of a $20 chip for a cash game, but here's my challenge. Most of you seem to be referring to custom CPC sets where this option is readily available. However, besides the Outpost $20 posted earlier in this thread, what would the THC/RHC options be? I'd have to imagine they're very limited.

If this deserves its own thread, I can do that.

All of the major Vegas casinos have $20 chips. Lease 'em for free, and redeem for cash when wanting something new for the home set.

Dunes oversized baccarat chips are pretty awesome.

Gear custom labels ..... I picked up some RHC chips (that I love) and had custom $20 labels made for them

I prefer a $20 for the low-stakes games that I play, but a $25 makes more sense at higher stakes.

The only thing that tilts me is a green $20 unless it's oversized (e.g., green 43mm Dunes $20 baccarat chips.

Yellow by law in NJ, and fairly common in NV. Most $20 chips in CA are either black or white, although white is more commonly used fot $100.

Can't recall any others off-hand (IN, IL, MO, MS, LA, OH, FL, PA, MD, CO, WA, etc.), but I'd guess that there are probably some out there.

This is a great thread and here is my thought process and take on this subject...

Disclaimer: for me, the $20 / $25 chips only come into play for the rebuys because I have enough 25c, $1's, and $5's to handle the starting stacks

Assumption: most players will rebuy with $20 dollar bills, and in increments of $20

In a 25c/50c NL game with $100 buy in (200BB), I think a $25 chip is perfectly fine for rebuys (mainly because you have the $5 denomination as well, assuming you have enough $5's to support the rebuys in addition to the starting stacks)...

$100 rebuy (max) = 2 x $25 and 10 x $5
$80 rebuy = 2 x $25 and 6 x $5
$60 rebuy = 2 x $25 and 2 x $5
$40 rebuy (min) = 8 x $5

However, it gets trickier with the $2/$4 limit game, particularly when you go with the conventional wisdom of this forum and build a limit set containing only 2 denominations, 1 base chip of $1 and a value chip of 20x or 25x the base chip. The starting stacks/initial buy ins will be 100 x $1 base chip. But the rebuys are where my challenge comes in if using a $25 chip as the value chip. Sure, as the host, I have a big bag of $1 bills and $5 bills to make change, but during play, I want to provide chips, not dollar bills to make change.

$100 rebuy = 4 x $25 (no problem)
$80 rebuy = 3 x $25 and 5 x $1 (no problem)
$60 rebuy = 2 x $25 and 10 x $1 (starts to become a problem because I have to have additional $1 chips on hand for each rebuy)
$40 rebuy = 1 x $25 and 15 x $1 (continues to be a problem because now I need 15 x $1 chips for each rebuy)
$20 rebuy = 20 x $1 (need a lot more $1's)

If I have a limit set of say 800 x $1 for my 8 player table and have 100 chip starting stacks, now I need to go get additional racks of $1's to support rebuys (yah, I know, most of you don't see a problem with needing to get more chips).

But if I simply introduce a $20 chip rather than a $25 chip, no $1's are needed to support the smaller rebuys. I simply exchange the $20 bill for the $20 chip(s) and the players then make change with the large stacks at the table (where a $20 chip = a $1 barrel!!)

Sorry for the rambling, but with a 2 denomination limit set (again, going with conventional wisdom of this forum when building a limit set), $20's seem to be easier for rebuys. However, with a NL set where additional denominations are included to support the rebuys, particularly the $5, then the $25 works.

Are there flaws in this thinking?

I was in the $25 camp but these arguments for the $20 have changed my mind.

I just love those $20 plaques from MSK :). But I cant find buds to have high roller cash game nights with haha.

My games have never had a need for more than a $5 chip. So it really doesn't matter a whole lot for me. Hopefully that changes some day.

Looks like its going to be the same for me. But perhaps around Christmas time we can do another $5 plaque group buy and my hope is that we can do it in design/color scheme of the $20. I love the $20.

I have both denominations in my cash set. I usually play 1/2. Therefore, I don't want to keep a couple of racks of quarters just for the rare occasion that I need them. Instead, for those times I use my 25s as quarters and keep a couple of barrels of 20s for the high denomination chip.

(I've said this before but) I am not a big fan of a $20 chip. The major reason is that it confuses my players. Likely it would work well for smaller stake games, especially if the typical rebuy amount is $20 or increments thereof. We play a fairly vigorous 1/2 or 1/3 NL game and the buy-ins are in increments of $100 (and nearly always $200 or more). In fact, my preferred approach is not $20 or $25, but neither. Lots of $5 chips, then straight to $100s. I have the $25 chips, of course (duh), but I think the game works smoothest like this.

That makes perfect sense. With those stacks on the table, I think I'd prefer a 25 too.
But my game is a .25/.50 and it plays like it. In our game, the 20 or 25 is the biggest chip you'll see, and I don't think I've ever seen more than 4 or 5 of them on the table.

Exactly! Get some $20 plaques and be done!!!

I thought about this question for a long time...waste of time really as there is no right or wrong. Ultimately I chose a $25 because I really wanted a green (mint chocolate) chip.

Thank you for this post! I've been banging my head against the wall all weekend trying to decide on a $20 or $25 chip for my upcoming order of CPC customs. You hit the nail on the head for me. I'm just wasting my time pretending like there's a "correct" answer to arrive at. When really, it just matters which chip looks better lol. My purple $25 is sexier than my black $20... Done!

Thanks again!

Awesome...unless you're being sarcastic  .

Does this mean you went back to your previous concept from earlier this year? Interested for sure.

Ya, I decided to take another shot at my Cali colors set :) I'll post it once it's finalized. Almost done with it though.
