Posted these on the blue wall a few years back, but since I'm getting the itch to do either an add-on or completely new CPC set, figured it'd be worthwhile to re-post and get some thoughts.

Quick backstory: Bo Manor is the name my friends gave to my humble abode when I bought my first place - a single family townhouse in the Baltimore suburbs. There's actually a Bohemia Manor area and schools - often referred to as Bo Manor for short - in Maryland, but that connection is merely coincidental. This set was somewhat of a wedding/30th birthday treat to myself, and I believe this was one of the first sets out of ASM Vegas. Luckily these were done during the Michael D. days before things really went down the toilet, though there were still a few issues with the quality of the chips that I'll note here.

The Mockup:
These went through a few iterations over a couple of months, playing around with the chip tool and doing my own amateur PhotoShop work, before finally settling on this for the main lineup (nickels and hundos not shown):

The Chalky Arrival:
These managed to show up on my doorstep a few hours before a planned home game, though I don't think I put them into play that night.

The Issues:
You may have noticed in the pictures above that there was a pretty substantial issue with the product I paid good money for. There were actually quite a few, but mostly minor stuff:
(1) The chips were delayed due to an inlay discoloration issue that Michael spotted before sending them out. Three of the denoms had to be partially redone. The white rings around the inlays also came out much thicker than I intended, but I don't mind the different look. No ring probably would have looked better, but oh well.
(2) It's pretty clear in the shot of the orange $5's above that I got two different variations of orange, and you may be able to see it better in the pic below with orange and DG orange samples. Apparently some of the paints were mixed during production and quality control did not pick up on this obvious difference before packaging and sending them off. Most of the error chips also had pretty bad split spots on the edges. Michael agreed to replace about 90 of the chips that were affected, and I threw in an add-on for an extra 100 since I realized 200 $5's was just not going to cut it.

(bad $5's on left, good on right)

(3) There was also a bit more variation in the thickness of the chips than I anticipated, both between and within denoms, though some more than others. Most affected were probably the $1's, then the hundos (not that they would see enough play in stacks to notice), and a little in the quarters. I mentioned this to Michael but never got much of a response, probably because the $5's color variation was the big topic at the time. Since I kind of see it as a minor thing that doesn't really affect the playability of the set I just tried to disregard it, but there have been times where it gets annoying (i.e. having 3 barrels of $1's and not being 100% certain that they're exactly 20, or matching stacks after a big all-in).

a-IMG_0463_zpsa96a4c7d.jpg

(4) Some of the chips, particularly the $1's again, had split spot issues. I recently did a tally with the $1's and it's a little more than 25% of the chips I received. It's not pretty ($20's shown are 2nd place in split-spot frequency):

So the question I'm contemplating now, after seeing the top-notch sets coming out of CPC, is whether I should redesign and replace the $1's (and maybe throw in a new denom or variation), or keep the set as is and spend a little more for a whole new set. I'm in no rush, but have been playing around with the design tool and will post some thoughts in a new thread here: http://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/bo-manor-possible-cpc-add-on-mockups.7895/

Enough talk, now here's some more pr0n:

Live Stacks:
Pics from my best game at the Manor (.25/.50 $100 max). Within the first half hour or so AA>JJ aipf, KK>QQ aipf, and then 77 flops a set on the very next hand and gobbles up another fresh stack. Later on AJ>44 on a 42AAJ runout where almost all the chips went in on the river for a nice big pot.

In for $100, out for a little over $700.

cool set and great pictures,
the split spot dollars chips make a hell of a shot !

ASM Vegas strikes again. Great design. They split the hell out of the edge spots on those $1s.

Love the hundreds mate, more pics of those please :). Nice set, sorry to hear of your issues.

Whole new set. Always fun when the first tough decision of the night "Which set do we use tonight?"

Whoops... sorry wife. Officially pulled the trigger on a CPC add-on to get (1) some higher quality $1's without the split spots and thickness issues, and DG Peacock in the place of Imp. Blue, (2) some secondary hundos, and (3) some showpiece $500's. Here's the final mockup:

Many thanks to David at CPC for all his help so far. Can't wait to get my hands on these new family members!

Nice add on. I too have ASM Vegas chips. There are tons of issues quality wise, but I still love my chips. I'll bet you do too.

Yes indeed. Despite it's issues the ASM set is too nice to just put on the shelf and fully replace with a whole new CPC set. Of course by no means am I ruling out a whole new CPC set in the future :)

YOU might be ruling it out, but I think someone else might have some say :);)

They have arrived! Just a little add on of 350 chips, mostly new $1's. Really loving these chips, particularly the $500's. Many thanks to David and the folks at CPC. Enough talk, here are a few quick pics:

Fresh out of the box. Noticeable height difference with the hundos. Strange, but will not be a gameplay issue obviously.

Old $1's on left, new on right. Not sure if it's all the wear and/or oil, but the ASM vs. CPC dark blues seem a bit off.

Hmmm... noticeable difference in diameters. Is this just from wear and tear?
IMG_1161_zpsipdagvuk.jpg

Color differences between ASM Vegas and CPC can be expected. I've also noticed that my hundos (also black base) are the thinnest chips in the herd, leading me to think the black clay compresses more.

The diameter difference is really odd though. From my (extremely) limited knowledge of chip -making, I cannot figure out how this occurs, unless there is a lathing step involved after compression. That is a mystery only @David Spragg can shed light on...

Very classy looking set! Hope those new hundos stay out of the singles stacks.

Are samples sets available?! These are hot!

Sorry, I didn't really think there'd be enough demand to order more for samples and need to be greedy in hoarding all the new ones for myself. I do have plenty of ASM rejects if you'd like some of those though :D

Those $5s look slightly smaller diameter than the original $100.
The diameter difference is really odd though.

The appearance of a difference between the $5's and original $100's might be the perspective of the shot. I never noticed any differences among the ASM's in diameter (just thickness), and still don't despite some of them not seeing much action. So I'm not very confident that the ASM-CPC diameter difference is from wear and tear, and it's going to kind of suck a little if it persists after breaking the new ones in. You can definitely feel the difference when stacking them together, i.e. putting out a bet of mixed denoms. Might just have to do another add-on for the rest of the denoms :)

Hope those new hundos stay out of the singles stacks.

I wouldn't mind having that problem :) Might get a few hundos on the felt but probably not very many. They're more distinguishable to me in person, mainly from the spot pattern.

Here are some better shots of the ASM Vegas vs. CPC diameter comparison, particularly for anyone considering an add-on. I don't own a micrometer but the differences are visible to the naked eye, and tangible as well, when in mixed stacks.

1st, 3rd, and 5th chips are new $1's, 2nd and 4th are an old $1 and old $100 (can't remember which is which)

Old $1 between some new $1's

Old hundo between new $1's. Other than my reject $5's, the hundos are the only denom with limited handling and noticeable brass flakes.

Inverse of above

Old hundos with old $1 - no real visible or tangible differences in diameter.

Quick update: Before I could even email him, David at CPC reached out to me and offered to grind the new CPC chips down a little to perfectly match the diameter of the ASM Vegas chips that were made to looser standards. I thought it over and am going to take him up on the offer. Planning to pack them back up and ship them off this week, but had to get them in play this past Friday first. Here are some more pics:

New ones are nice

Thanks! I should give an update on the new chips. I took David up on the offer and shipped them back to CPC, along with some of the original ASM Vegas chips, to have them grinded down so diameters would match. Everything looks the same as the pics above now, other than the ones showing the diameter differences obviously.

David also offered some interesting insight into the chip-making process, particularly how the FDL chips and a few other molds are often made slightly larger than 39mm, and how the ASM Vegas folks really didn't seem to adhere to a lot of the very specific standards that they use now at CPC, and I'm assuming we're also the norm under Jim B at ASM Maine. I never noticed it before, but the ASM Vegas chips are grinded down pretty darn close to the tip of the FDL molds. It almost gives the some mold arc portions a flat appearance when you really stare at it for a while.

Short version of the story: David and the folks at CPC are awesome to work with. I love my entire set, but would've just waited for CPC to come about if I knew back then what I know now. Obvious solution is to start designing my next set :)

That seems a little harsh lol. Especially considering I just emailed you guys pretty much the finished product. Just asked J5 to see what the font looked like on the $1 if it were retro red instead of white, other than that I'm ready to order.

I'll believe it when the chips are in my hand putting out a light 3-bet over your open :D

Also, which of these is more likely to happen within the next year?

Lovely chips, MrBo, and a great read too about the progress/journey.

I'm blown-away at the thickness difference with those black CPCs though
