Going back a few years...
Better than Ezra

View attachment 185780

I heard an interesting story about their band name. Apparently, when starting out they were at a battle of the bands and were set to go up. When the organizer asked them their name they didn't know what to say. The band that just finished playing was called "Ezra". So the guys said "we are better than those guys !". So they just told the organizer to introduce them as "Better than Ezra" and the name stuck.

PS. Planning to see Fogerty aka CCR later this year so pretty excited for that!

We went to see Weird Al over the Labor Day weekend. Last show of this tour. He's playing with a 41 piece orchestra, show was fantastic.

We saw him in Peoria that Friday night. It was my Christmas gift from my wife and son. I had an absolute blast!!!

It’s so easy to download music now and listen to it without having to “buy” the music. Before, you had to buy the album (vinyl, tape,cd). Now artists are having to find creative ways to make up the difference. That means touring more, merchandising, and selling recordings of live shows.

It wasn’t so long ago that artists vehemently discouraged bootleg recordings. The exception to this was the Grateful Dead. Not only did they incourage you to record every one of their shows, they also sold special “taper seats” at no additional cost. This was a section where people would bring elaborate recoding equipment. People would trade tapes. This was a practice and attitude that served the band and all their fans well. When technology caught up, there were people with GD merch that you could order the CD from that show.

Good times!

We don't get too many great acts down here below Tampa and Orlando -- mostly old farts' music and "tribute" bands. Or Motown groups with at most one original member left...

Headed to see the Who in Tampa next Sunday.

Just bought tix for two Bruce Hornsby shows next March -- one night in Clearwater, the following night here in Sarasota. Man, he does a great show.
At least The Who still has two original members!

So did Jethro Tull. Before the Web existed, we used to have a "Tull Tree" of Tull-lovers all over the world. Each branch of the tree from the top would copy and send the audio CD or files from a concert to ten lower level branches, etc. A recorded concert would get all over the world in almost no (pre-Web) time ...

Very cool, didn’t know that. Only saw Tull once. One of the great things about the GD is you could see them 3 nights in a row and it was a totally different show, all different songs. It made for great road trips and also fun to trade tapes. I still have a bunch of bootleg cassettes. God only knows if they’ll still play!

Enjoy the Hornsby shows, very talented. Saw him play many times as he was a touring member of the Dead from the late 80’s until things ended with Jerry.

Going to hear live music was my thing when I was younger. Hell, I still enjoy it but don’t get out as much. Years ago, I. can’t tell you how many times that my ears were ringing on the way home and sometimes the next day. Fast forward many years later and I have tinnitus. The ringing never goes away and sometimes the smallest of noise (depending on pitch) can set it off.

Hearing live music is one of the great joys in life. Moral of my story......... if you don’t wear earplugs to concerts you should start. Get a good pair that allows you to hear the music but protects your ears! Don’t leave home without them!
Quoted for importance! Luckily I figured this out pretty early when I was still in college after a couple really loud shows in particular. One was the Flaming Lips in a smaller club, and my ears were still ringing 4-5 days later. Another time we saw The Urge (huge band in St. Louis at the time) and afterwards went to McDonald's where my now-wife's friend was closing the store. My ears rang so much that people were talking to me and I couldn't hear a word. It was like a preview of being fully deaf. Ear plugs always now!

Yeah I went to Metallica last year and it was the loudest show I remember being at. I wore earplugs and my friend made fun of me. The next day his ears were still ringing and he admitted he probably should have accepted my offer for some ear plugs.

I was a slow learner. Lol! Ear plugs always for sure now. A bit late for me. It not only has to do with the overall volume but where the location of your seats are in relation to the PA speakers. You can have band you’re going to see that you may think is mellow enough, but if you’re seats are within a certain distance from the PA it can be a whole different ballgame.

I've got the foam plugs at home (or I just borrow some from work) and I also bought a set of nicer ear plugs (Dubs) that have a flatter frequency response and don't block as much sound. Usually the Dubs are fine, but I learned the hard way that sometimes they are not enough, so now I bring both kinds of ear plugs if I think it's going to be a really loud show. I saw The Obsessed at a tiny club in Denver called the Hi-Dive (it truly is a dive bar), and it was SO LOUD. It was painful even with the Dubs in, and it's just a little bar with 2 speakers, no big fancy line arrays or anything.

I’ve been using the etyplugs which work pretty well and allow you to hear the music and they protect your ears. HOWEVER, I’ve had to resort to bringing the foam plugs along also, as you said because once the music was too loud. When the music is that loud it becomes overkill at that point

My wife and I used to go to a ton of shows, but now we only see a few a year since we have kids. Next weekend we're going to see Speedealer here. They re-formed a couple years ago with a new lead singer. We used to see them constantly when we lived in Dallas, roughly 20 times in 3-4 years. Looking forward to that! Here are some shots from some recent shows we've seen:

Weird Al at Red Rocks! The first real concert we've taken our kids to.

Gloryhammer! My wife and I are currently obsessed with this most epic of power metal bands. Hail Hoots! We saw them open for Alestorm last year and then they came back to the US as a headliner this year.

Electric fuckin' Wizard! I drug my wife along to see these godfathers of stoner/doom metal. They don't tour the US too often, and it was epic.

We liked this little local metal band called Cloud Catcher, and this shot is from what was supposed to be the release party of their new EP, but the band fell apart first, so it was kind of a kick-off for the next version of the band with the lead singer/guitarist and two new dudes. I hope they stick together because it was great and the new drummer was so incredible. It was like watching Dave Lombardo from 10 feet away in a tiny bar. Just amazing.

Witch Mountain! We saw them at the Hi-Dive too. They're a great stoner metal band from the Pacific NW. Their new lead singer Kayla Dixon is amazing. They're about to go on tour with Corrosion of Conformity, but unfortunately they are skipping Colorado.

I think I have seen him 3 times in the last 12 years. Excellent show each time.
Agree. I went against my will and paid and
arm and a leg for the tickets, but I ended up enjoying it almost as much as the wife.

This would have been absolutely spectacular!

It was really great! The funny part to me is that for the rest of their lives, when someone asks my kids "what was your first concert?" their answer will be Weird Al at Red Rocks. My son loves him and we got him a Dare to Be Stupid t-shirt, but my daughter will be less than enthused to admit to that fact. :D

The Speedealer show on Saturday was really good! And the second opener was a local band that I'd never heard of called Valiomierda that was really cool too. The guys were totally loose and having fun, and they had a great mix of punk/thrash/death going on. Some songs were very punk, others were similar to Sepultura. I started following them on Facebook, so hopefully I can catch them again.

The first opener was some local band of guys just playing together for fun, and they were ok. They had a big crowd of groupies dancing which seemed to be their 50-year-old wives and girlfriends. Also their bass player was wearing lederhosen for some reason, and they had a buddy taking pictures of them who I swear had a peg leg like a pirate.

Antoine Dufour tonight. Front and center at small venue, pic isn’t zoomed. Amazing fingerstyle guitarist!

haha okay this cracks me up. You know you are old when you show up to a rock show with several sets of earplugs to choose from depending on the show lulz!
