Am I the only one on here who cannot shuffle chips!! I stack two neat piles next to each other, put my hand over them and start to shuffle, them... My hand goes into a claw and chips scatter everywhere.  Even freezeframing YouTube videos doesn’t help.
Just thought I’d share my ineptitude with everyone...

I’d say it’s mostly about the action of your middle finger, while exterior fingers form a sort of cage to keep the chips moving toward the middle.

There are lots of YouTube videos showing how it’s done, some better than others. I could never do it, then watched some vids, and sat down for about a half-hour at my dining room table until I got the knack of it. Now I can shuffle giant stacks in my sleep.

For me, the key to learning how to shuffle chips was to use a soft touch. I don’t use my middle finger at all

What kind of surface are you practicing on?

Most people “lift” the chips by sticking a finger between the two stacks. Personally, I don’t do this, which means it’s very difficult for me to shuffle on a hard surface. But on a poker table I can go all night.

Try using your couch, or something really plush, to aid you at first so that lifting the chips isn’t so difficult

Hard surface, or cushonied surface?

A cushioned surface will allow you to get under the chips just enough to lift the center of the two barrels and feather them...
I’m going at it on a wooden table... Will take your advice try somewhere softer.

Didn’t realise that the surface made a difference. Will try going soft instead of hard...

Also, the type of chip makes a huge difference. The sharper the edges the harder to shuffle. The Mint ceramics are very easy. Super Diamonds are extremely difficult.

I actually have found sharp-edged CPC’s easier to shuffle than the beveled or round edge Majestics, Showdowns, and cheap ceramics. I think that is mostly due to the slippery nature of the inexpensive chips. The PGI 8v’s are much less slippery than other china clays, in my experience, and don’t shuffle as well as the CPC’s, despite a beveled edge. YMMV.

I took some chips out to shuffle and got the “you are an idiot” look from the girlfriend. Will leave it for another day...

Dang, your inner middle schooler beat my inner middle schooler to the punch!

If they fly around is because you press them too hard.
The trick is done while you lift the stack with a finger not because you press them hard each to other.

I've even tried using two hands just to try and get the feel of what's supposed to happen and I still can't do it!

I have my father's short, stubby fingers. I'll never get this down, even after 15 years. I play guitar as well and it severely affects my abilities there. The videos make it look so easy.

I love it when some short-stacker sits down at my table (hoodie, sunglasses, headphones—just like the pros on TV!) then proceeds to mime the chip shuffle by picking up a stack and dropping chips one by one on top of each other. Suave.

This is exactly what I thought chip shuffling was before I read this thread:D
No reason to torture chips if they already produce a nice sound.
I now get why "never played, just shuffled" should not be considered mint.:cool
