I go to a couple local games
Game 1. Weekly cash game with 10 rotating players (usually only 6-7 per night). Starts at 7pm and ends at midnight. Host has gatorade, bottle water or soda in fridge. No food provided other than once ever 3 months or so someone brings cheese dip in a crock pot. Everyone BYOB and most actually bring own soda/tea. No rake, no fees. I tip host at end of night $5-$15 depending on win/loss as well as kicking in to person that makes dip and brings it. I do take water and soda so i tip.
Game 2. Host has multiple games per week, every Tues, every Fri, and every Sun. $1-$2 cash game has $2 rake $3-$49 pot $5 rake $50plus pot. Host provides brats/dogs/burgers or pizza along with chips/pretzals as well as soda or water and funsize candy bars (big hit here as well). Some guys complain about the spread provided but i am cool with it and i participate by eating food and drinking water/soda. Brats/hotdogs are cooked in water in crock pot/not some fancy roller machine. I tip at end of night $10 -$40 unless busted.
Game 3. $2-$5 game, bigger rake, better food such as smoked brisket, smoked pork, homemade bean salad, etc.., he provides beer as well as water and soda. usually hosts on a saturday with big UFC / Boxing Fight Night. only has game every 2 or 3 months. i would kick in a $10 in chips at beginning of night for fights and tip at end of night. Again fun size candy bars are big hit.

in all of these games i am a tipper when food or drink is involved that i participate in. All 3 hosts treat their game differently. The one that does not rake does not provide food. bigger rake equals better food.

The rake at game 2 is as big as any casino!
If the action is good I could deal with it, but I wouldn’t be tipping the host on top what is already being raked every pot. It sounds like he makes his living from these games if he has 3 per week.

At $2-$5 raked per pot he could easily be clearing $60-$100/hour with a decent dealer making sure the action is moving. I doubt all but the luckiest winner each night is coming anywhere close to that amount won any given game.

I used to run tournaments at my house like maybe 4-5 times a year. The most I had was a 60 Person Tournament. The average tournament size was about 40 people. I always provided the Food, Snacks, and Non-Alcoholic Drinks. I usually provided catered food from a friend who owned an Italian Take out Deli. I would get stuff like Sliced Steak, Chicken Parm, Eggplant, Meatballs, Chicken Marsala, Pastas, Salad, and other great stuff my friend made. The Menu at the Tournaments rotated, but the Steak was a constant as the people loved it. One time we also had also a 5 Foot Sub to go with the other food we had. I would also provide like various snacks Chips, Cookies, Cakes, and other stuff and drinks like Bottled Water, Soda, Coffee. The amount of food would always be adjusted accordingly to the number of players. I always mentioned before hand to everyone that money (Depending on what is served $5 to $15) would go towards the Food & Beverages and it would always be BYOB. No one ever complained and they always thought the food was awesome. Some people even at times offered to give me more money because they felt for what they got I should of collected more. The one time I got lazy and we just ordered like a bunch of Pizzas and just Soda so I asked for less money. People always told me for the money that they gave for the food & Drinks they never felt they got skimped on. I normally did not make anything on the Food, but I really never lost much either. As long as people feel they are getting their money's worth then people will not complain. I never felt shy telling people that a portion of the money for the Tournament would go towards Food & Beverage.

The funniest Tournament story I have is a friend of mine drove 5 1/2 hours from MA to NJ and he busted out on the very first hand of the Tournament. He just made it in time for the start of the Tournament. He flopped a set with Kings on the very first hand and another guy hit a Straight flush and busted him out. He begged me to let him back in the tournament with another buy in for 100, but my tournaments have no Rebuys or addons with no exceptions.. So he had to wait like 30 minutes or so for enough people to start a small cash game.

BTW- Does anyone use the Poker Tournament Software called"The Tournament Director". I felt is was some of the best Poker Tournament software out there at the time.

Dare I start an pure "recipe" thread? Recipes for poker nights only, of course. And I'll put a restriction of no Pinterest links allowed.

Just ordered this! Can’t wait to try it out. :)

After getting permission for the roller dawg machine, I finally mustered up the courage and ordered one, and it’s due on Thursday.. I showed a pic to my kids today, and they werent impressed. Then they proceed to rat me out to my wife, as if I’d done something wrong, and my wife was like, “please tell me you’re joking”... my kids were relishing in my discomfort ... now, I’m in the dog house and will be playing catchup in the marital karma game for quite some time...

Sometimes forgiveness is better than permission. Get her something she has been eyeing, problem solved. Maybe.

I've been using the Tournament Director for my games, I quite like it.

Yes. You do need to beat your children.

@Trihonda

Could of been worse your kids could of told your wife "Daddy was Talking to all the Pretty Ladies at the Playground." like my son did to me when I took him to the playground at the park last year. Our kids were playing with each other so we struck up a conversation between the parents. Now that's uncomfortable to explain to your wife. But I do have to give my now 4 year old son credit those Moms were very pretty and he recognized that. How could I be mad?

Over the past 15 years or so, I've been running a small monthly game (it used to be weekly) of fast tourneys on weeknights for 3 hours at a pop. It's about close friends and not much money at all (some of us are unemployed) - and it's more about the play and the laughs.

It's always been BYOB (or snacks), and that has worked out well. Also, given that some of us come directly from work, some of us make the time to either grab dinner beforehand locally within walking distance, or I'll cook stuff for everyone at times (I'm a chef, so I'm proud to do so). As eating at the table slows everyone down, particularly given the tourneys are fast, dinner is before poker.

The fun thing is that we're generally a bunch of sweet toothed guys - so the rule is that you can't touch any dessert or snack item until you're knocked out. I traditionally always ensure there's at least a bunch of Pepperidge Farm Brussel cookies that always get gobbled up, no matter what. Sometimes we'll have beer/port/whiskey - it all depends what people bring.

Again, for our group, it has traditionally been about us friends catching up, bragging rights, and not about the money. We have lots of fun traditions - like where the winner gets the prize money poured on their head after they win a tourney...
