Anyone take rake or charge a sitting fee? (1 Viewer)

We've had this problem at the BBotB where players were not tipping dealers so we had to put in a $1/hand rake for dealer pay, and I've heard similar stories from DCS.

This is a room full of people who can afford plane tickets to play micro stakes, but a few of them can't manage to appreciate the fact that some person is giving up their night to make life better for us.
being able to chit chat, drink, and not have to worry about the pot being split, cards being read, or anything else is such a convenience, I'm willing to pay.

Hell, even I got tipped from a few people when we were self dealing at @bergs game a couple weeks ago becuase i was in the middle seat and doing all the pot-splitting for the entire game

You really think a guy who buys a $1k+ chip set an $800 table, hundreds of dollars in chairs, opens up his home, spends hundreds per week on refreshments, and donates countless hours to organize it and make it all happen, and asks for people in the game to contribute a small portion of that back through the game is a parasite?

Wow.

In my mind the parasites are the ones who come every week and refuse to contribute to the expense of hosting. I don't expect people to contribute for the chips/tables/chairs/cards/etc. But a contribution for the ongoing weekly expenses is not unreasonable.

No wonder friends are so hard to come by for you.

Wow... OK... Lets all take a breath... This is getting a bit emotional and personal now.

Hmm

OK Chickenrob I see how that came across now. Good point. i think there may be some points you might have overstated but after reading my last post i can see how you drew those conclusions and got a bit pissed off at it.

Yes parasite is a very strong word. Sorry about any offense i may have cast there. Maybe turning it into a business is more fitting. My point is that if you consider this, there is a fundamental shift in the game and your friendships. It used to be a home game - if you charge for it, its now a business.

That change comes with a myriad of legal and friendship issues that you may not have considered.

I mean i see you feel very strongly about it and have attended the game Maybe you could get the guys to chip in so he doesn't have to ask. You have a great opportunity to make a positive change for one of your friends.

Just to let you know where im coming from. I've been running my poker league every fortnight for the past 4 years and doing exactly what you describe. Yep it sucks setting up, often it takes 2 to 3 nights to make everything just right. I supply food Make the coffee and when im knocked out i deal the game. (we do 2 S&gs) and give away trophy's for each game. They arent expensive trophys but after the the money is spent the glory of the trophy lasts forever. The player of the year gets one of my personalized dealer buttons at the end of the year. All, the chips we play with are new Paulsons. (see my avatar) So lets say I know what I'm talking about.

So everything you describe about the game you go to is what i do for free every fortnight. And I ask for nothing in return. I really don't want anyone paying for it. I do it because i want to. Most importantly that is what makes a game in this country illegal. Being raided by the cops at a home game then getting a record for it would really suck.

If you love it do it. If its costing you too much stop doing it. But i couldn't imagine asking my friends to pay for it. but thats just me.

If its cool for you to do it then go for it. But if you do the relationship has fundamentally changed. the people who attend are customers now. Moreover your now running a business. Not a home game anymore.

I'm only saying this could put peoples noses out of joint And possible legal issues.

And again i apologies to your mate Pair. Sorry Pair i never considered that you i was calling you a parasite. Inadvertently i did and i publicly apologize for that.

There's a middle ground between running a for-profit venture and paying for everybody's beer and snacks out of your own pocket. You're seeing it as black and white, which is how the law sees it, but that's not what's happening at these games.

Of course if i'm paying a rake, i expect a bathroom stocked with 2 ply toilet paper ! Better be soft, luxurious and not be able to poke through with my finger when i'm wiping my bum.

I dont want to hear "i dont do the grocery shopping" from the host. Get your shit together:sneaky:

but will call a $120 preflop raise in a $1/1 NLH game with 94offsuit, interesting what they will spend their money on, when we know the value of the dealer is to add speed to the game so we can see more hands per hour.

To be fair, if you are calling $120 preflop in $1/$1 NLH with 9-4o but never tip, you absolutely understand the value of a dealer. Fewer hands per hour is the closest to +EV this guy will ever get.

I even tipped you for splitting a big multiway pot with a side pot or 2 that I wasn't in. Your work was appreciated by us.

This was exactly my point.

Not every host can afford to treat for everyone weekly or bi-weekly. I never complain when playing in a game that is well run and everything is on the up and up. Even if the host is amking a living, if everything is clear about it, I still consider playing in those games. It takes a lot of time and effort to run a good game, and keep a healthy player pool going.

I run home games in my house. I even host an annual meetup for the community here. I put time and effort and money into these things and never ask for anything in return. Sometimes people donate money against my will.

There are other games I play in where the host can't afford this, but he like s to host and has a good group of guys willing to contribute through small rake or whatever. I have no problem there. He shouldn't stop hosting because he can't afford to give aweaay all his time and money. If it's a good game and everyone pitches in to keep it running, where's the harm?

I invite you to compare the quality of TP at my house to bergs.

I did like that when i came downstairs in post bathroom TP rage... you proceeded to list the acceptable brands in support of my cause.

@manamongkids has the same "grocery shopper" as Bergs.

THIS, very much this.

The amount of time and energy spent on organizing a game on a weekly basis is understated, most of the player pool has either no clue, or doesnt care. They just get to show up to a well attended game, usually with lots of action, and play.

Most of the home games I play in or host have infinitely more action than a usual 1/2 NLHE game at a local casino or poker room, Foxwoods, Seabrook, Hampton, Mohegan for us MA/NH people. Their dealers are typically very poor.

A small rake in my game, or a local game, I see no big deal. I'm also not advertising the game to the masses, you need an invite to attend and our player pool, although sometimes cheap, they do understand that.

Pay $1/hand rake in a private game, with beer, nice tvs, nice chairs, nice table, and nice chips.

Pay $5-6/hand rake in pokerroom/casino game with nits, pay for your own drinks, crummy chips,

@guinness was at my house this past weekend, and declared I had the perfect toilet paper, and took a picture of the package to upgrade at home. I gave him a roll for the road.

To clarify: it was thick, substantial, soft, strong, and didn't leave lint behind when using. Total upgrade cost per year over @bergs brand: $10. Worth it.

I think you are reading that wrong. He was saying that "friends" that would come over eat all your food and use all your stuff without even thinking about bringing food, beer or contributing somehow shouldn't be one of your friends.

Ahhhh Wait on...

Tipping an American thing.

There is no tipping in this country as a rule. We just work on equitable wages where you don't need to tip. I was amazed to hear that in the US waiting staff actually get taxed on their tips weather they get them or not!?!? I'll never get my head around that.

Further more its illegal to tip dealers in Australia.

So yeah - you're right. In Australia it IS very black and white.

Ok i don't get the norm in America so "Carry on"

This misinformed Aussie is Out!

At my house, @Shaggy and I deal the entire night, he sits across from me. Every other hand is dealt by one of us..

I have also had other shuffle while I am dealing, but I dont like that as some people shuffle on the rail and the potential for a card to hit the ground is high..

My understanding in California is RAKE is illegal, unless you are registered as a Card Room business...All money that comes in must go out, I think tips are illegal as well.. If people give you a chip, and you keep it to the side till the end of the game that would be OK... I do have some who give me cash after they cash out, but its when the game is over..

Where can you go to find out exactly what is legal in your area? All I can find for Ohio is that no one can profit from running a game. I assume there could also be county or city restrictions, but I can't find anything on line anywhere...

It's ridiculous how difficult it can be to find local ordinances. You'd think that stuff would be online by 2017, but it often is not.
As long as you seriously intend on complying with all laws, you could just go check with your local PD.

@Choker, I Just looked up "california home poker laws" on google, then read as much as I thought was relevant to me and my games..

No rake, no tips, I do it because I can deal faster then most, and I like using nice chips over dice chips.

Just wanted to add that waitstaff in America make around $3 an hour. THAT is why Americans tip. Nobody could live on that alone.
