Bought 1300 Majestics recently for cash games without getting samples (doh!) after reading reviews and watching videos etc... So no one said anything about how slick and 'chalky' they are... I washed them ALL, and they're still kinda chalky. But worse is their slickness.... Practically breathing on a stack and they slide off each other... Any way to fix this? I've read some people talk about oiling chips... ?

Oil will fix the chalky feeling, but will probably make the slipperiness slightly worse. I noticed the Majestics were more slippery than my other China clays.

A little oil (there are threads on how to do this) will remove the chalky look, but China Clay is inherently slick. See the Chip Cohesion Test thread for more.
Dang.... I bought some ProGen CC some years ago (profile pic) for tourneys, and didn't have that problem at all... Love those chips. I am hugely disappointed and may have to try to sell all of these Majestics

Yeah, they're kinda ridiculously slick IMHO... I think part of it is the somewhat rounded edges

Oiling the Majestics takes the chalkiness away and really brings out the awesome colors. However, they are a more plasticky after oiling and definitely don't stack like Paulsons do. After a few times in play though (with natural oils and grime from hands), they do get more tacky and are much easier to keep in stacks. I think you need to oil them and put them in play a few times and see how it goes. Are they perfect? No. Are they Paulsons? No. Will you ever be able to build a solid fortress of chips like you can with Paulsons? Probably not. But I think they look great and I think you'll find that they feel better after using them a few times. I have a set of 1500 and I really like them.

Oiling them will definitely make them more slippery.

FWIW -- I have 3 sets of CC chips -- the CPS, the 8Va, and the Majestics. A couple of years ago I did some testing with those chips, ceramics (from PGI), and Paulsons.

The CPS were the PGI group buy chips and the Majestics were the Apache group buy chips. The 8Va's I got from PGI with custom labels and have been around a long time.

For the testing I used 20 chips in a stack. I tested 5 stacks at a time. The test consisted of stacking them on my cash box 1.75" from the edge (I called it the tip test). Since the lid is hinged, I could uniformly raise the lid so each stack was at the same angle. I covered the box with a non-slick material to see which chip stacks toppled first through last. For comparison, I'll give the results for these 5.

This is the order from most slick to least slick:

CPS (3) 1, 1, 1
8Va (7) 2, 3, 2
Ceramics (10) 4, 2, 4
Majestics (10) 3, 4, 3
Paulson’s (15) 5, 5, 5

I tested 3 times and in each test, 1 indicates which stack toppled first and 5 was last.

Based on this, the Majestic mold is the least click of the CC chips I have. What this test does not show is how much better the Paulson's were! They were just the last to fall, they were the last to fall by quite a bit.

I primarily use the CPS and Majestics. The Majestics are not as slick in my experience. Most of my players love the chips because they are comparing them to slugged chips or unslugged plastic chips. In my experience, the CC chips are must less slick than plastics.

I got rid of the chalky appearance in both sets by just putting them in play and not oiling them. A night or two and the colors brighten considerably.

I hear steel wool will make them less slick ;)

Winky face aside, abrasion makes chips more slippery, not less. Chips "stick" together because of...
  • Material - different materials have better grip.
  • Weight - pressure creates friction.
  • Surface area - more point to point contact increases friction.
Two China Clays made of the same material (like the CPS and Majestics) will tilt at the same time in a tilt test (like my video or Tex's experiment), but the CPS toppled first every time, because they were "crosshatched". This crosshatching - fine indents/lines in the chip means there is less surface area touching each chip - thus less friction, and therefore more slippery.

The CPS chips where made with the crosshatching at the request the more vocal of members in the group buy that simply did not understand physics. When the Majestics were being designed, crosshatching was specifically dropped.

I oiled mine and I don't find them that bad. They're definitely more slippery than my CPCs, but they stack and handle well.

Interesting. I never considered china clays as being slippery. I've only had a set of Pharaohs (but have had samples of all the others) and never once had an issue with them.

And oiling my Pharaohs didn't change the feel or play of the chips at all.

More evidence that the more recent china clay offerings are more plastic than the composition of earlier chips.

These things will win any stack-topple test, unless you have chips made of Velcro:

I can say without a doubt my spirit mold chips have way more grip than majestic's. Found brand new ones about 6 months ago for like 20 cents a chip. They were getting rid of them. I got 1000 of them and couldn't be happier. Hopefully future china clay's can go back to a higher clay content.

I still stress the fact that once these chips are put in play, that they start to grip better. I had my first NL cash game the other day with new players and received nothing but compliments on my Majestic chips. I would much rather the chips be a little more durable (plastic) then try to mimic the Paulson clay compression process and produce a less durable chip. Sure I'd love to have a China Clay that mimics a Pauson perfectly but that's a lofty goal. For anyone reading this, the Majestics are a solid upgrade over slugged chips. They aren't Paulsons but they are still nice.

I got to agree. The durability is a big plus.

I also bought a bunch in the group buy. Never had a chance to notice if they were slippery. I returned them because of the inconsistency in diameter and thickness.

The short story is @Apache rocks!! Absolutely one of the best vendors out there.

Look at the stack height difference on 10 chips. New china clays are nickeling and diming you in more than one way. I also love square shoulders

Lol. Moral of the story is everyone has there own preferences and no one chip can make everyone happy.

lol you guys can keep kidding yourselves but these babies snap in half so easy.

I have many different sets. All have seen play and all take wear differently.

  • ABS - These are tough, but I've has chips get chipped, exposing the slug underneath. At least 1 chip occurred in normal play.
  • Ceramic - Bought these from a 3rd party reseller during the poker boom, so I don't know who actually manufactured them. They have seen a lot of play, but there has been no noticeable wear (so I am ruling out Sun Fly as a possible original manufacturer). I do know ceramics will fade over time with normal use.
  • China Clay (CPS) - The most brittle chip I've ever owned. Had 2 break in half when I poured 2000 of them into the jacuzzi to wash them. Not "normal" use, but the highest "loss" rate of any chip. They were easily glued together and are indistinguishable from non-damaged chips without close examination.
  • China Clay (Milanos) - These feel a little tougher than the CPS, but are very close in thickness. They are my least favorite chip, so they see little action anymore, but I have detected no damage. They were never washed.
  • CPC - So far, I've had none break, but I do know that certain complex mold designs tend to break more easily than others, and have seen some of that damage first-hand.
  • Paulson. The soft Paulson is legendaty for the way it wears with use. First a few flea-bites, then it becomes a little worn. With thousands of hours of normal use, they eventually become "bicycle tires", and are thin enough to need different racks. Not that any home game will ever put on this much wear and tear onto a chip.

i had to clean and lightly oil all my majestics to get rid of the chalky feel and the 'smell'. They still stink but the stacking has been ok for me. Not even close to paulsons i have.

I've switched from majestics to HS cincys for cash games. never going back.

If you decide to sell let me know what you've got. I was going to order some majestics as soon as Apache Poker got back from vacation.

And it's interesting that my Majestics never really had a noticeable smell to them like others have mentioned. I guess they did smell but I associated it to more a new car smell than anything, not anything that bothered me. As someone noted above, everyone has different likes and dislikes when it comes to chips.
