PAHWM: Live 10/20 PLO4 from the BB (7 Viewers)

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Such is the predicament on the river when facing a big bet without the best overfull.

Hero doesn't block any of the better boats, while Mr. Splashy Pro can easily have JJ with a queen blocker. I do not expect Hero to be awarded the pot if he calls.

Call.

PLO is fun. Let the variance wash over you.
Based on the reads and as played, I decided that I'm at the top of range other than the occasional slow-played JJ or 33. I also think that villain will have a lot of creative bluffs and let's just say he's probably drunk.

Hero (BB) has been dealt :as: :9s: :9h::th:

Pot: $1600

Flop: :js: :9d::3c: Turn: :qs: River :3s:

SB bets $1500
Hero calls

SB laughs, checks his cards, shakes his head, and says the magical words..

"You're good.", and promptly mucks his cards face down to the dealer before I have a chance to show my hand. It's a friendly-ish game, so I briefly show my 99 before I scoop the almost 5k pot.

Now, here's a fun rabbit hunt.. After the game breaks almost an hour later, Villain would tell me what he bluffed me with.. What do you guys think he said he had? Did I make the maximum by letting him bluff off or did I miss value on the flop and turn?

Hmmm K-Q-J-X with the King of spades?

FYP.

This was a fun post. The game ends up breaking as we get to 4 handed, but we're waiting on our last round of drinks. We end up talking about the hand and he mentions that he had AQJx with backdoor diamonds, and didn't expect for me to have a boat there. Dunno if this is 100% true, but reasonably believable. Really intrigued by the dark check on the flop and lead from him. Perhaps he had one pint too many during the hand.

I end up winning a few small pots before the game breaks and book a modest-sized win for that game. Pretty good result after a pretty bad run for me at the Aussie Millions, 1-2 weeks before this hand.

Villain's river bet makes perfect sense, QJxx is his main bluffing hand. Based on how the hand unfolded I think hero's most likely holding would be T8xx (because of combinatorics a playable 99xx is much harder to come by). With three spades on a paired board, it would have been a really tough call to make with the sucker end of a straight.

On the flop he had top pair with overs (blocks top set and top2) and a straight draw blocker, bd diamonds (I'm assuming to the nuts) and bd nut straight draw potential. Not my go-to play to donk pot in that spot but he was splashing aroung, and if he was aware of how tight UTG was then I think it's fine as he was sandwiching hero in a tough spot there as well. Turn dark check usually indicates a weak hand looking for a free river card, at least until proven otherwise IMO.

This reveal is interesting. Thinking of this from villain's perspective, holding QJ, there is only one combo of QQ or JJ available to hero. Villain also isn't going to put hero on 99 all that often, so he probably assumes hero is capped at a flush, and probably also gets here with a lot of straights. Villain beats none of that, and may assume a bluff here would be very tough for hero to call with a large portion of his range that is better than villain.

Even with hero having 99, I think this thread revealed this was a tough call for hero.

So when I put myself in villain's shoes, this actually strikes me as a decent bluff attempt that could have worked on a decent hunk of hero's holdings.
