Nothing conclusive. I believe we have about 4-10 active members in 20s. A lot more in there 30s. I’d venture a guess almost 100% of chippers here are 35+ (even if I’m wrong, it has to be 90%+).

I’d guess more than 50% of pcfers are working not retired, but on the other side more than 50% done child rearing vs having young kids (or ability to). I wouldn’t be stunned to be wrong on those two flips, but it feels pretty right.

They come in, look around, find a set of chips they can finally afford, they get them and they are gone. Even if they were middle range chips they are gone to us. The owners don’t post here, they just wanted some better chips for some reason. There’s hundreds of these kind of members.

"Matters to you" is much more on the nose and accusatory than my interest. I'm an academic. I teach economics and link that with demographic data. For me it would be a purely academic exercise to further understand the microeconomics of this hobby.

I originally responded to your post because you pointed out that with your income you felt you could not afford a set of Paulson chips. Then you made an assumption that folks who could afford nice chips must have high paying private sector jobs as if that’s what’s held you back from buying a Paulson set.

My responses to you were more to say that anyone who wants to own a nice set of chips can do so depending more on where their financial choices lye verses having a private sector job or a government job.

In the state of Virginia where I’m originally from, there are many people employed by the federal government or government contractors who make large six figure incomes.
In the town of Fredericksburg where I once used to live and work, almost 2/3 of people employed work for the government and make substantially more in salaries than their private sector counterparts.

So when I see a government employee hinting that people in the private sector are somehow better off financially with their jobs, it kinda makes me laugh.
After 49 years of living in Virginia and working in the private sector, it became evident that my private sector salary could no longer afford me the quality of life as folks with those high paying government jobs.

So five years ago I decided to do something about it, which is what I was hinting at toward you with my responses.
Now that I realize you’re in academia, your wanting to know certain things makes more sense, but I really don’t think demographics has anything to do with owning a nice set of chips or not.

I went ahead and did some figures for you, assuming that living in California you probably paid state income taxes of at least $5000 per year.
My numbers were pretty close. If you lived in a more tax friendly state like Florida or Texas and could invest that $5000 in yourself verses giving it to California, in 30 years and based on S&P 500 average returns, you’d have yourself just over a cool million in savings.
And probably could afford those Paulsons you’re wanting.
Anyways, enjoyed the banter @BigGrizz and I’m routing for you in acquiring those Paulsons you mention.

Not sure I get your intent with the post but I take no issue with claiming responsibility for my own betterment in life. No one but myself owes me that.

And yes taxes are important when it comes to contributing to my local fire department, police, infrastructure up keep and military. I take no issue paying my fair share for those services.
I take no issues with the occasional hand ups to people in life either but constant hand outs to people who take very little responsibility for their choices in life gets really old.

Believe me, that’s a good thing and a place I’m working on getting to myself.

I’m not sure what “excess investments” means but I would think the more excess a persons investments were, the more financially independent and less burdensome on government they could probably be.

I didn’t own any Paulsons until I was in my 50’s. I could have, I just chose not to.

The intent was to highlight the discrepancy of your philosophies that brought up and said you live by. The point in general is that people only care about themselves (which to a certain extent, they have to care about themselves first), but to those who are fortunate enough to be in a position where paying taxes won't make a material difference in their lives, they should contribute and they should feel good about how they are making their own daily lives and the lives of other a little bit better. And of course, if you were in the unfortunate position where you needed some help here and there, I'm sure you'd be grateful for others who are so giving and willing to help.

And if you think that I think the govt is perfect and people don't abuse the system, you'd be wrong on all accounts. But unfortunately, as you mentioned earlier, people are bad at budgeting their money, and we know very well how billionaires like to keep 'their' money to themselves. If people were left alone and not forced to pay taxes, our nations would be in chaos and the inequality would be way worse than it already is.

And please don't see my comments toward you as an attack on yourself as a whole. I just don't agree with you and I felt compelled to say something as many people think that way about taxes and I personally believe it is selfish and misguided. And again, to clarify for you and probably ekricket, I'm not saying you are a selfish person, I'm talking broadly about "philosophies" here...

All I know is the goverment will get what they think is their fair share one way or another. Either through federal and state income tax, high property tax, or some other way. The vast majority of us aren't wealthy enough to bypass that.

This is my approach, ~2% of net worth in hobby assets (watches, poker chips, etc).

For me is like 17% chips and 16% watche and the rest in SPY. Now that I have all my tiger chips its like I finished paying a mortage and the extra cash goes straight into the investment account.

It often feels like I missed the golden age of this hobby. We need a new player in the lower-to-mid end home compression clay market.

That was CPC. But nobody knows if new owner will maintain quality, or reopen at all. So, people hold on CPC chips as well, in case they become collectibles. For people like me just willing to play with good chips, there's no point paying $10 per chip as in the ads, Tina's or SunFly are perfect. Collector market (chips kept in vaults and never felted) is certainly different, as well as investor market. Special mention for reseller market, people crawling eBay or etsy for underpriced chips to be sold here at $$$ whithout even changing the pics (very funny to compare the two ads). Sometimes there are weird ads, like a rare French set recently proposed at an astronomical price under a handle referring to a local drug cartel...
