The time has come! Crown Series Poker V2 (Bridge Size) is going into development - as per our first poker-size outing, the development starts right here on PCF.

Based on the success of our first set, these are the features we will definitely be keeping the same:

- same stock and finish with same manufacturer
- same style of luxury rigid box with hot-stamp foiling
- plastic cut-card included in the setup
- in-between Blackjack size index
- unique artwork for court cards

Things I am open to working on and making different the second time around (or could just keep the same - not yet set in stone):

- back design
- box and foil colour
- specific court artwork

In addition, I have been itching to create some Crown Series Poker chips for a while now, and I keep bouncing between 3 options (but mainly just 2):

- Tina hybrid ceramics (most affordable)
- Matsui poker chips (premium - more expensive)
- Matsui casino gaming chips (ultra-premium - most expensive)

The truth is, I really want some Crown Series Matsuis, ideally the fully custom high-end chips, although I'd be happy with their poker chip option. That's kinda where my heart is. I know that interest from PCFers would be minimal in the Tina option, as you guys can get in on group buys and get your own customs for great prices, which is fair, but even without taking this into account, I would still love some Matsuis...

For those that don't know, Matsui chips come in 2 options - their poker chips which come in pre-set stock colours and a single edge spot design with a custom inlay (great quality - I have the samples) - all 2 colours (for example, red with black edge spots), and their high-end gaming chips - same size and weight, but a wider variety of colours, loads of really cool chip designs to choose from, and 3-colour chip options (like a red chip with black and green edge spots) - also these seem tighter QC, sharper edges, brighter plastics etc. These are fully intended for casino use and look and feel very premium (I also have a couple of samples of these). The poker chips are great - the gaming chips are better.

Their high-end chips are around double the price of their poker chips (possibly more depending on options) - the cost for a 300x or 500x chip set would be high...

I want to use this thread as a developmental soundboard to dial in the cards & chip options for our V2 project, which I intend to launch as a Kickstarter campaign later in the year. I wouldn't rule out the idea of a pre-order sale through our webstore as we did for V1s, but I'm leaning more toward keeping everything in a Kickstarter campaign if possible.

For those interested in signing up to the Kickstarter pre-launch, please do so HERE - you would be most welcome! We need minimum numbers before we launch, so if you are genuinely interested in being a part of this project, whether for just the cards, just the chips, or both - please sign up for notifications so I can start to get a good idea of numbers. Equally, please only sign up if you are seriously interested, so the numbers don't get skewed :)

At this early stage, I am opening the floor to ideas, feedback, thoughts, suggestions and expressions of interest in this project. Then I will come back and work with you guys to dial in the design of the playing cards, back colours, box design, chip manufacturer, design, costs etc. etc. etc. and hopefully we create something awesome.

Thank you for your interest and support and let's get the ball rolling! Cheers :)

Which Matsui chips are crown series? I'm looking through the catalog below and can't find any mention specifically of "Crown chips" (granted this is from 2016)
https://matsuieurope.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Matsui_chip_catalogue.pdf

Here are two Manufacturer's samples I've got from them, both with crowns. The left is their standard casino chip I think, whereas the right side is the brass core super heavy thing. The brass one I've only seen used in promotional chips and is maybe used for other casino games but I've never seen them used on a poker table. In my hand it's a bit harsh from the sharp metal edges.

Always fun to see a new set created from Matsui, curious to see where you go with this :)

This would be a custom set that I designed with my branding on (Crown Series Poker) - not anything Matsui already makes.

This is a comparison of one of the gaming chip samples I have (on the left) with one of the poker chips. I would be putting my own inlay into a Matsui chip where I picked the colours and edge-spots etc.

Cheers!

Thanks for the clarification

I’m slowly working through a, uhhh, master guide / list / identification scheme to help specify what chips people are talking about (eg with your project, or when selling online, or referencing from a movie, etc)

And since Matsui and the other premium plastic chips mostly don’t have “molds” where the ornamentation is recessed/debossed, it seems like the proper way to address them is to link to the manufacturer’s catalog and use whatever terms they use, which are sometimes themselves ambiguous!

Lots to untangle, but it’s coming!

Yes to bridge jumbo/blackjack indexes. Try to stay away from standard red/blue. Maybe red/black, blue/orange, pink/light blue. Cream colored boxes like the poker size cards.

Tagging meet up hosts for potential group orders. I'd jump in on an East coast host's order. In for at least 6 setups depending.

As for Matsui chips, you may have interest as a stock option depending on the design/colors/denominations. Best way to go would be a non denominated chip to use as a quarter/0.50 cent/Euro chip. Then $1, $5, maybe separate $20 amd $25 offerings, and a $100 chip. Tournament sets too with T5, T25, T100, T500, T1k, T5k, T25k options if you're up to it.

As far as colors go, either a Vegas or California color scheme would sell best here I think.

Vegas:

Yellow/arc yellow frac/NCV
Blue $1
Red $5
Green $25
Black $100

California:

Red frac/NCV
Blue $1
Yellow $5
Green $20
Purple $25
White $100

Tournament:

Red T5
Green T25
Black T100
Purple T500
Yellow T1000
Orange T5000
Blue T25000

Interested in some bridge setups.

As for the chips, out of the options presented the fully custom Matsuis benefit from a large order size the most. But I wouldn't want to stock a huge inventory of sets, as plastic chips in that price range might sit for a while.

While I did enjoy the slightly more artful court cards I suspect you would sell more units with something a little more traditional. And as @JMC9389 stated something other than red or blue would be appealing like a purple and arc yellow.

Looking forward to see how these develop and hoping to buy a bunch of the final product.

Yes defo some cool colours for the backs, not straightforward blue and red.

As for the chips, I was thinking of picking one format and running with it potentially, either a cash or tournament set, and probably (but not necessarily) Vegas colours... I was leaning toward cash

I’d also be interested in bridge size blackjack index. I actually do like red and blue (It’s a playing card standard and there should always be that option IMO) but I like deep saturated primary colors. Not the biggest fan of pastels. Something like deep wine burgundy or deep purple and dark green, blood red or even burnt orange (like TX Longhorn orange) and navy, etc. Black and charcoal grey are cool too.

Vote cash you should use the (Abbiati GB) The Crown Plaza Cash Set as an inspiration and cool colored backs like Broken Arrow is doing, looking forward to supporting your Kicktstarter campaign

Definitely interested in the cards and echo @JMC9389 and @RocAFella1 color comments.

Matsui chips are awesome, but will need to be priced near cost for me to have any interest.

Make sure to get samples first before committing.

I had exactly these. And they’re not quite plastic. They’re very good—but also very expensive. A couple of years ago I wanted to get a custom set from Matsui, but the price was so insane that CPC cost about the same. Maybe it’s worth considering their hot stamping with your own chip lineup?

I think you would have a much easier time selling chips if they were very generic. Maybe the crown these but not your name. I personally would never buy new chips with a name other than my own on them

Definitely do Vegas or AC denominations and colors.

Maybe something like the famous Paulson Nior but with a crown in the background

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I will be posting some WIPs soon for you all to take a look at, there are so many options with the chips it kinda makes my head spin, but I did really like the Matsui samples I picked up and I know they are held in good esteem, so I will run with them to start with and see where this goes. I anticipate this thread being something of a slow-burn while I work everything out and get all the designs drawn up and then pick the pace up a bit closer to production - planned for sometime this Summer :) Kinda the same way we did it last time. in the meantime keep the suggestions coming! Cheers

i really like these cards. they might have the best court card designs i’ve ever seen. as much as i would love to use them in my home game, i can’t. i tried one time. we had to switch decks almost immediately because the hearts and diamonds were too difficult to differentiate, especially from far away. also had some complaints about the reds being orange. such a shame cause the artwork is gorgeous

Not sure if it fits the theme, but would be interested in a four color deck with the designs.

I'm excited for this project! You're a great designer, and I'm excited to see where this goes. A few thoughts:

  • I really like your court artwork for the V1 cards. I would personally be excited for artwork that strays even further from traditional (so long as it's still very legible). It's also an unfilled spot in the market right now. There are lots of "artsy" paper decks available, but not so much for plastic cards / poker players.
  • I like your current back design, but a lot of your paper deck designs have very nice (and visually interesting) backs as well, so I wouldn't be opposed to seeing something new. Only requirement for me is that it have rotational symmetry.
  • The only back colors I don't like are: black/red (too similar to the faces, I want a little more variety) and dark green/anything (dark green is too close in color to my felt, and I like a little contrast)
  • Box and foil color aren't important to me.
  • I'm excited about the cards, but the chips I'm highly unlikely to buy -- I'm set with my own designs in that department.

I like the slightly different court artwork, and would also support going a little more away from traditional without being to fringe (there are already many traditional options, standing out a bit seems a positive to me). Just my 2 cents, a charcoal gray (grey for UK🤪) and yellow decks would be neat, and a dark charcoal (not tooooo close to black) with metallic gold foil would probably look really sharp.

Thanks for the replies everyone! All taken on board. @QuietMaple - thank you for the kind feedback - entirely new court artwork and a more intricate back design are certainly not off the table at this early stage.

Right now the plan is to carry on moving slowly ahead with the project and start picking up momentum June/July for a July/August launch, all being well. We have just suffered a demanding family situation that took a lot of time and energy from us for the past month or two but I am hoping some progress can be made on this and other projects now.

Once I start spamming WIP artwork and ideas you will know we are on a roll to the finish line  :ROFLMAO:

Cheers!

Sorry to hear about your family situation. Looking forward to see what you come up with!

Family first, that's out of question! Take your time and all the best to you and your family!
