Curious what sort of feedback I get on an issue that happened last Saturday.

I hosted an 8 player 1/2 game with 7 of my regulars and one new player. Friend of a regular…

After the game ended I paid everyone out, counting their stacks myself to ensure accuracy.

On Sunday I was cleaning up and racking up some stacks left on the table. After I finished racking all the chips I noticed 5 $5 chips missing. All of the buyins and cash outs lined up at the end of the night.

At first I messaged the group to see if somehow 5 chips ended up in someone’s pocket. This has never happened so figured it was unlikely. I’ve looked under/around the table but came up empty.

Am I wrong for considering the new player may have swiped 5 chips from a stack after cash out? This was the first time playing with my newly finished flamingo solid set so there was talk about the chips that night.

I have some extra red solids so the chips are easily replaced but it’s the trust factor I’m struggling with.

New player seemed like an overall good guy. Played well and got along with everyone.

Kinda sounds like a 21 chips in a barrel thing.

I thought the same thing but I went through the chips afterwards. The stacks I passed out were double checked/counted by each player before the game started.

Search your house, they'll turn up.

This happened at @Flopalopagus ' game a few months ago. One of the other guys spilled beer on the chips and took them upstairs to rinse off in the sink. He left them upstairs and the chips weren't found until the next day.

Was there a dealer w tips?

Give it a few more days happens to me a lot of times they turn up.

But not a good look for new guy.
No dealer for this game.

I’m not going to accuse anyone but my regulars have been playing together for about 10-20 years. So when this happens for the first time when we have a new player I agree not a great look

This was my thinking. Admittedly a few players had one too many and one in particular did knock his stack over. I assumed I may find them in the carpet under the table but no luck

I took a set to a new game with a bunch of casino dealers and a few of the $1 chips went missing. Assuming they thought it was okay to pay $1 to keep one as a souvenir.

I wasn’t banking the game and left before it ended so I didn’t find out about it until the next week. Thankfully the chips were easy enough to replace. I wouldn’t have taken a high end set and left it there.

I mean if someone asked I can spare a few for souvenirs but I’m not sure my regular group even cared about my new chips lol

In the end the $5’s that went missing are easily replaceable with extras I have on hand.

Just a bit of a head scratcher why someone would think pocketing 5 $5 chips is acceptable. Unless they show up…..

I also tend to lean that "they'll turn up".

That said, you're Canadian. Be Canadian...

"Hey, I just asked the other guys at the game to see if anyone ended up with 5 extra chips, as they seem to have gone missing. Any chance they somehow ended up with you? No worries if not, but I'm into chip collecting and having every chip with a set is important, so would appreciate it if you would check your pockets just in case. Thanks and glad you could make it, it was a good time."

Polite and non-confrontational. You can even throw in apology somewhere if you feel so inclined.

I can't imagine very many non-PCF people are going to pocket chips to keep as souvenirs. They just don't care.

Chips out/cash in balanced chips in/ cash out. No banking errors known. So, the missing chips weren't "harvested" or lost during the game.

Perhaps OP didn't know how many chips he started with? :D No, no, that isn't likely at all. We ALL know our chip counts. Especially when we had full racks that aren't full anymore.

Chips dropped by someone behind a table or in cushions. Possible, worth a look.

Missing chips show up at the next game with the bank off by $25? Well, then we have a problem with the new guy.

I wouldn't say anything and see if the chips come home next week. If something is said to the group, I fear the chips get pitched in the trash rather than be turned in for cash.

Hoping for the best. Good luck -=- DrStrange

That’s a decent number of chips to go missing in one night.

I’ve been short and found a couple low denoms in the poker table cupholder - so now I do a quick walkaround check after the game. Was sitting at the table in the dealer seat and looking everywhere from that angle and on the floor and wasn’t until later found ‘em there when about to move the table.

Lots of people talking about chips getting dropped or whatever mid-game, but the money and chips balanced perfectly, right? If that's the case, it doesn't make sense that live chips went missing while in play, because the bank would be over by $25 (unless there was a strange parlay: the bank was exactly $25 short and exactly five $5 chips went during the game).

Either OP misplaced them, or someone swiped them. That's what it sounds like.

You mentioned there was discussion of the chips during the game. Presumably that included some discussion of value? If a non-chipper were to steal under those circumstances, I'd expect the chips to turn up on eBay soon.

I’m not sure this is accurate for all Canadians. Just listen to what your president has to say about us sometimes…..

Seems like really bad value for a would be thief to effectively 5$ a chip for 5 chips, no?
Maybe somebody was discretely taking chips off the table to reduce their stack size, intending on cashing out but forgot?
Either way I’d offer amnesty to the group if someone accidentally pocketed the chips, saying they’re not worth much as a collectible but to you they’re worth a lot sentimentally?

The odd part is all the cash in and out balanced.

Not wrong at all to be suspicious of the guy, but I'd air on the side of not throwing around any official accusation without knowing for certain.

Couldn't hurt to have a camera going on all times at the game tho! Even with all trustworthy regulars could be useful if some disagreement happens like "he mucked!"/"no I didn't" or "he string bet!" type stuff.

I can’t believe someone would try to cash it in later, it’s $25 at a 1/2 game, and the risk is so big

Loved @Rieguy’s suggestion.

I also tend to think that they will turn up. I’ve only been to one game where 1 chip went missing inexplicably. Personally and depending on what chips they are, flip the house upside down. I’ve got faith brother. They’ll turn up. Good luck!

I can’t imagine very many PCF people would do it either.

You’d like to think they’ll turn up but I mean you’ve looked. If the regs are vetted and aproblematic, new guy gone pending further evaluation.

If you were actually missing a chip wouldn’t the bank be off too? Did someone buy in or rebuy for a nonstandard amount?

Yeah but what's the value of relabeled solid reds? A buck apiece?
Similarly, as @curlyhead44 said, it doesn't make sense to steal $5s to try to sneak them back into a $1/2 game at a later date.
This is a mystery.
Maybe one of the regs hated the new guy, so he stole some chips, expecting the new guy would get blamed? I know that sounds ridiculous, but I haven't heard any ideas that don't.
