Controversial Chip & Poker Opinions (59 Viewers)

1. Most of this recent ish posted isn’t controversial.

2. I think playing serious poker for meaningful $ with friends is really dumb. This is by far and away my biggest source of distaste for hold em.
Agree on 2 for sure. Seems psychotic. I don’t even like to buy things from my friends.

I've thought about building a fully 3d14 set once or twice. There's something really beatiful and classic about that edge spot.
Yosemite, Aruba Palm Beach, Claim Stake, and the list goes on all use 3d14 at least twice in succession, and do so very well.

The responses to the actual controversial opinion must flow for a while. You can't stop this circlejerk train.

I’m looking for used claim stake $1s if you ever sell any!

2. An opinion I’ve long held that folks seem to disagree with: I think playing serious poker for meaningful $ with friends is really dumb.

I actually have been thinking this a lot while thinking about my new set. I love playing with friends but I also love playing 1-2 or 5/5 games. But damn I don’t want to play 5-5 with my friends. Maybe I should make my set around the game I want to host not the game I want to play?

I can try, damnit!

The whole forum and especially marketplace is built by circlej*rking, for circlej*rking, while talking about and engaging in performative circlej*rking.

I pray to the circlejerking gods, please let these men find their way to those threads, and protect this once great, and once controversial, thread.

(Before the chippers still learning to recognize a smile from a frown get upset, this is a joke!)

Do both.

Here comes another opinion no one asked for.

Everyone chips differently. I personally think there’s no point in owning 98%+ of chip sets out there (for me, idc what other folks do).

I have 2 or 3 sets. They get used. Before I retire each of them will run frac to $1k.

If you don’t own 100 sets and are building/buying/creating a worthwhile (read forever) set, have it cover the gamut.

“Spot progression” may not be a thing, but lineup “cohesion” certainly is.

As all too many NAGB mixed lineups have shown, just because an individual chip looks great, doesn’t mean a set comprised of good individual chips necessarily looks good as a whole.

At current prices, WTHC chips are the single most overvalued chips in the entire hobby. At $1 they are all world, at $3 okay great chips, at $4-5 it’s a stretch but I can see it, at $8-12 they are WAY overvalued. I can’t think of a single set that is more overvalued.

At current asking prices right now by 1-2 newbees, you mean? People can ask whatever they want.

I will say that it’s fu*king gross when someone posts a set for super expensive pricing, and then comes in everyone with those chips (who know better) talking them up, glws, amazing chips, omg amazing I’d add on if I needed to here’s mine, won’t be here long, etc. to stan and hope for an updated price point for their own chips’ value.

Maybe that’s just the transactional aspect that lifetime poker players have, but good lord PCF classifieds and market is like the embodiment of “I took out the max in PPP loans for personal use and didn’t pay any back because you’re a sucker if you don’t try”.

HOW ARE THESE STILL HERE???

*Not controversial*

WTHC has amazing colors and shaped inlays, also I am a fan of pips mold, and they may not be leaded, but they feel superior than NAGB chips. In addition the rarity of the 1s and 5s seem to translate to higher prices for all denoms. They must have came out during the poker tourney boom.

As a newer member, I found it odd how often there are sets that don't sell with a ton of people are piling in to say what a good deal it is. It all made sense after I found out there's a rule that bans people saying anything negative and a lot of people have a vested interest in pumping up the price.

Pro tip, if a sale gets dibsed in the first 30 seconds it is an amazing deal, 5 minutes it is a great deal, an hour a good deal, sitting for a week is a unrealistic price/bad deal.

It might be unrealistic, but not always. I've had stuff out for a long time that did sell eventually, when I didn't want to sell at loss and wasn't in a hurry.
Now, whether something like that is a good deal depends on the buyer's needs and intentions for the chips.
