Hello PCF! I'm 41 living in SC, but originally from rural PA. Think Amish country, but I still have tech. I can safely say I've been playing card games and poker almost my entire life. My parents are big into poker and taught me how to play stud and draw. I was so young, I don't even remember, so I probably learned my numbers and early childhood math by looking at cards. Who needs to count higher than 52 amiright? I really got into hold 'em in my teens, and we went to Atlantic City shortly after I turned 21. I've been to Vegas twice, for work only, but was able to spend a couple days in two of the "big casinos", MGM & Caesars. I've been lurking for a couple weeks now, and didn't even know I needed this obsession, until....well I found PCF. I didn't even know customization sets existed, and I always assumed people with these high end poker chips were bazillionaires. I mean thay'd have to be to have enough chips to host 40+ people in a tournament, in nice, clay, marked "casino" chips.
Thankfully, I estimate I'm a break even poker, but that's probably only because I don't get to play as much as I would like, which makes this an enjoyable pastime, and not a dangerous addiction. Well, it is sort of little of an addiction, I'm here right? Unfortunately, the closest card room is in a couple hours away in NC, so that makes it less than ideal for playing cards, so I've had to settle to playing with the wife's family. While enjoyable and great family time, I want to have a cash or low buy-in tourny. So far : unsuccessful. I order to do that, I wanted my own set, and my wife got me a set of the "dice chips" for me as a gift. I have in recent years bought a couple barrels here and there, and now I have basically a rainbow of denoms, none marked of course, but I'm using the standard color format ; $1 for white, $5 for red, and so on. I have enough chips to host a single table or possible 2 small tables of 14, or a decent cash game. They are separated out, and I found out early I wanted to have a separate cash and tourny set. I found some people at my job that are also into poker, and want to start hosting games on a regular.
I guess this leads me to a problem. I am wary of hosting using the dice chips for my first cash game, as they're cheap and easily attainable. I don't know that any other players I'll be hosting have any chips at all, and they seem to be casual players, so i don't think i'll turn into a "counterfiet" situation, but I've read about a lot of stories. I don't plan on using anything higher in denomination than a light blue chip for $10/$20s and the $1s and $5s I might break out a couple black hundreds, but probably not. I am planning to buy a bunch of the Monaco clay chips, but just dont have the funds at the moment. I will probably have to use the dice chips for a couple games. I reached out to Gear labels and wanted to see about labeling them with a custom design, and was politely informed that the juice isn't worth the squeeze. As the chips don't have a recess, the labels will pillow up, and either scratch or just come off after moderate use. I've read about people using sharpies or stamps, but that it can look cheap and not really worth it to mark a couple hundred chips. What are some thoughts on DIY ink stamped vs un-denominated until I pull the trigger on the Monacos?
Anyway, I am glad to be here, love that there's tons into this hobby, the resources and custom sets I've seen. I didn't think an intro thread would turn into a question, but here we are.
