Sell now, or wait for next year's 30th anniversary?

There are some pokemon pack x-rays out there that are using technology to analyze what's in the package before it's opened. I feel this tech will inevitably grow more popular as I see what technological advancements are needed for inspecting the new AI chip semi-conductors through multiple layers of dense material. https://xrayauthority.com/
Stuff like this is scary. Even back when I was a kid people were weighing packs, or ripping the back to check for special cards.

How in the heck did you not open these up way back when?

Tough one. Lots of chatter about a general ‘bubble’, stocks way overvalued, maybe an AI reset like the dotcom bubble - no one knows when, but probability seems to keep increasing vs 30 year hype of this specific genre.

I think you’ll likely get more from an emotional purchase from a 30 year buyer vs selling now, and the overall market shouldn’t affect that? Or will it? I voted sell now however I’ve flipflopped.

Its a tough question! But if I sell for a good amount and see it worth 2x as much next year it won't hurt as badly as holding it and watching Nintendo announce a resale or something killing the worth.

Sell now, then put it all on @MrCatPants roulette, Red 3 straight up, and get paid 35 to 1.

My simple plan to wealth creation. Your welcome.

There will be no reprint or anything to hurt the value of those. WOTC era Pokemon will forever go up, it’s just a matter of people having money to buy them or not.

I’d sell now. Prices are good, happy accident.

Alright, there it is: initial offer for just the base and fossil/jungle packs is $2750. Lower than I expected, we're in talks now.

Feel completely stupid turning it down but as per eBay listings sold the past month they're more than that.

Good luck! I was never into Pokemon. But my kids are. I just took them by the store today in fact to buy packs. They get cash for chores and save half and spend the other half on either pokemon or legos.

I had no idea the collector market for these is so hot. Their grandma bought them a used card of some hard to get character off of eBay. I'm afraid now to ask what she spent!

good for them, I like that system. No, these are 20+ years old and in great condition, most cards aren't even this valuable. People will buy a pack for $400, open it up, and be ecstatic about a card worth $250! We're not the only irrational gamblers.

Alright! I hit it big. Went up to the attic to find my old cards, but found:

I knew people still collected Pokemon cards, but I had no idea, my God. I bought some plastic magnetic cases and sleeves to keep them protected now that they're out of the attic. Plus it looks more professional and demands better prices.

The prices are insane. I think chip prices are stupid too, so at least I don't discriminate. I don't collect things that I don't use so I am very interested in selling them.

Here's the problem: I don't want to squeeze every dollar out of it, BUT Pokemon's 30th anniversay is next year. There's an awful lot of geeks my age who grew up with them who may want classic vintage packs (especially the starting 3), and that would pump the price up. What's our take? I see three options:

- Card convention 15 minutes away on Sunday. They usually offer 75-85% of online value, tons of vendor tables so more likely to actually sell. This is my favorite, would be great to get this off my plate and into the hands of someone with the clientele to buy em.

- Sell slowly on ebay. Fees and packaging sucks but this is probably where max value is. You can go on ebay and click "Show only Sold listings" and see how insane the prices are. Even if ebay scalps 15% off I'm getting paid.

- Save it until next year, when the market may go way up. This just occurred to me, big anniversary coming up. There's a chance more people would sell and possibly lower the value of my cards, but I suck at economics. Is it a no-brainer to wait until closer to whatever Nintendo announces? Prices went BANANAS in 2021 for the 25th anniversary but that was also Covid/stimulus money with people stuck inside, can't guarantee that type of bubble again.

I'm not a good salesmen, I'm an even worse collector, so I wanted to ask the expertise of the forum. Appreciate any input.
Are you familiar with TCG? My son has bought lots of cards through TCG. Best I can explain is it’s like a network of independent shops and people that sell trading cards.

We have a local shop nearby that is very cool and pretty honest about values and what they offer to buy. Maybe you might have a local shop you could check with.

You’re not kidding about the values. There are a few sites that have full stock ticker like analytics, trends, forecast, etc. - lol.

I got my son a “Pokemon center” elite trainer box last Christmas from that local store (at the owners recommendation). It was $150 so I a bit like WTF, but it was fair mkt when I looked it up. Last card of the last pack was a massive score “Magic Carp” which is worth like $500 - $800. It’s nuts, he got like $1000 worth of cards in that box which is just crazy insane out of one box.

The 1st gen unopened stuff is really cool and can be really valuable.

That’s awesome!

Edit: that’s about as much as I know about Pokémon’s - lol. My son was into them. Now he just tries to get collectible cards.

If you ain't getting enough to finance a set of CPC's with a PCF approved breakdown, hold

Yes! Crazy valuable, its silly. Really cool art though and very nostalgic.

Sold at a local store. Great feeling and good for my fee; half the store stopped played Magic The Gathering and Pokémon to come watch me take out all the packs and decks and things. Soon as it became a spectator sport I knew I'd be happy with what they offered! There was some bowing and some tiny rips I hadn't seen, either from age or resealing. They had no reason to trust me but I was adamant that these came right from ToysRUs/KBToys straight to the attic.

Apologies Chris, they only took them as a bulk deal with everything included, no PCF rips.

Very happy with the price. eBay's market would've been higher but the time /shipping/fees were just not worth it and it would've resulted in a similar amount. Done, I wash my hands of them and I'll go back to not thinking about Pokémon. Cheers, thanks for voting. Feel free to bump this when they're worth 3x the price next year.

Now hopefully The Chip Room has something you like on Black Friday.

Congrats! I def think you made the right call. I'd roll that little windfall over into a diversified stock fund in a brokerage account and forget about it again.
