Alright! I hit it big. Went up to the attic to find my old cards, but found:
Mom used to bribe me with Pokémon packs and things when I was a kid. Just found the leftovers sealed in a box in the attic, pretty happy I grew out of them when I did! Got some research to do on what's the best way to sell em off. Everything Gen 1.

I knew people still collected Pokemon cards, but I had no idea, my God. I bought some plastic magnetic cases and sleeves to keep them protected now that they're out of the attic. Plus it looks more professional and demands better prices.

The prices are insane. I think chip prices are stupid too, so at least I don't discriminate. I don't collect things that I don't use so I am very interested in selling them.

Here's the problem: I don't want to squeeze every dollar out of it, BUT Pokemon's 30th anniversay is next year. There's an awful lot of geeks my age who grew up with them who may want classic vintage packs (especially the starting 3), and that would pump the price up. What's our take? I see three options:

- Card convention 15 minutes away on Sunday. They usually offer 75-85% of online value, tons of vendor tables so more likely to actually sell. This is my favorite, would be great to get this off my plate and into the hands of someone with the clientele to buy em.

- Sell slowly on eBay. Fees and packaging sucks but this is probably where max value is. You can go on eBay and click "Show only Sold listings" and see how insane the prices are. Even if eBay scalps 15% off I'm getting paid.

- Save it until next year, when the market may go way up. This just occurred to me, big anniversary coming up. There's a chance more people would sell and possibly lower the value of my cards, but I suck at economics. Is it a no-brainer to wait until closer to whatever Nintendo announces? Prices went BANANAS in 2021 for the 25th anniversary but that was also Covid/stimulus money with people stuck inside, can't guarantee that type of bubble again.

I'm not a good salesmen, I'm an even worse collector, so I wanted to ask the expertise of the forum. Appreciate any input.

How badly do you need money now? How valuable is your time? How much money "roughly" is at stake?
Good questions.
1. Not very badly, but putting together a down payment in next year or so.
2. Becoming more valuable, gone are the days that I'm driving 3 hours for $100 profit.
3. Right now I'm expecting a couple thousand if sold in bulk. Unsure of the ceiling. These aren't mint or first edition so its not buy-a-house money.

Was worried the consensus would be to hold. I don't like gambling on the market, I know other collectors who are savvier and have built up buyers may be doing the same thing.

yeah but then I have to deal with people on Facebook Marketplace, and I would rather cut my fingernails too short.

IS THIS AVAILABLE? WOULD YOU TAKE $20? ITS FOR MY KID.
I hear ya but it's still the most profitable way to go. It's way better than letting eBay rake you. Give PCF first Crack though.

5 figures easily if weighed, graded and sold slowly
Mmmm unsure, obviously would like that but they're not mint. Some bowing and they're not first edition or shadowless, that's the real money from what I've been reading.

Considering grading but that's $50/pack to possibly devalue them and I'll have to wait 2 months.

My bad, was thinking about AUD in my mind for the whole lot. I think 21g is standard for those packs but not into the Pokemon game, more of a Yugioh guy

I have an ex-coworker friend that has his own business around buying and selling all things Pokémon if you’re interested. He’s probably give you fair value and obv no fees.

Nice find! What did you do to get a booster pack from Mom as a kid? I was a terrible hitter in baseball so she would give me one if I ever got an extra base hit.

I would trade you a bunch of random racks of chips for these. No garbage, Paulsons and the like. You might have more fun selling them or possibly use them.

Always looking for a known guy, I'll DM you later.

Mom loves all things board games and card games and she's passed that on to me, hence the presence on a forum for card games lol. It was mostly chores, she didn't care how I did in roller hockey. I remember my first penalty for headbutting; got put in the penalty box during the game, then got sent to my room at home. No justice, punished twice for the same crime.

What are they worth unopened as is vs pulling the 10 Charizard/Blastoise?
Worth far more sealed in almost every instance. There's a chance there's a holographic with an error print or something that would double my price, but incredibly slim. If these were 1st edition it would be a different conversation due to the cards rarity.

Appreciated but no, I just don't need much and I'm excited at the prospect of selling them.

There are some pokemon pack x-rays out there that are using technology to analyze what's in the package before it's opened. I feel this tech will inevitably grow more popular as I see what technological advancements are needed for inspecting the new AI chip semi-conductors through multiple layers of dense material. https://xrayauthority.com/
