While my question is table-centric,

Please use this thread for all adhesive questions! I would like to see posts referencing any need for or recommendations to adhesives. So when someone uses the search function we can have a decent resource, if we get enough responses, I'll try to create a more comprehensive thread.



I can't remember what adhesive I used to affix foam to wood for my table. I think I used 3m 74, but I don't recall. Are there any recommendations or affirmations?


I do plan to use @T_Chan recommendation of 3M 77 for the felt-to-foam adhesion.

I just used Loctite to adhere quarter inch volara to the existing padding on the pictured Barrington. I was impressed with the adhesion and would use it again for fabric to fabric.

I've used 3M 77 to adhere fabric to closed-cell foam for playing surfaces. Note however that it can be tricky not to get wrinkles and air pockets. Takes a lot of care. I also weighed it down (once seemingly smooth) with books for 24 hours to ensure optimal results.

I just resurfaced my table and I reused 3M 77 and it worked great.

FWIW, in the double-sided adhesive tape category, I watched some YouTube video reviews, and this one stood out:

The guy is nothing if not thorough...

The winner (and also by far the cheapest per foot) was a generic Chinese brand, which took two out of three categories by a longshot, and second in the other one:

3M GPT-020 is a great multipurpose double coated tape…

74 for softer open cell foams…low soak-in and foam tearing strength. Web spray…would telegraph through thin fabric.

77 for foam to fabric…light weight bonds…mist pattern prevents telegraphing.

Have you tried 3M Mount tape? It’s the best I’ve tried.

I used a (supposedly) similar Gorilla product the last time around... And was disappointed.

The target is three sound-deadening panels made for my custom Jeep. They stayed up with the fabricator's 3M tape for about four months, before starting to sag and finally drop. Not sure what 3M variety they gave me; all I could see was a faint logo on the provided strips.

When I tried again with Gorilla double-sided foam tape (which had all kinds of EXTREME and STRONGEST claims), basically the same result. One of the three panels stayed up, the other two lasted only a few months.

I gave up for several years, but now am going to try once more with the LPPT stuff, once it arrives.

Back on spray adhesives... This guy ran a comparison of 3M 77, Gorilla and Loctite, plus a traditional carpet glue:

His weird delivery is somewhere between Ed Sullivan and Max Headroom, and he drops several Out of Context-worthy lines along the way... But his test methods, though basic, seem solid. He liked the 77 best.

All acrylic foam tapes are susceptible to static dead load creep. Typical design constraint requires at least 4 square inches of tape per pound of static load…if you exceed that load it will flow and overcome the elastic response.

I used this to mount an old poker table top to a solid wood table & it worked so well i couldn't remove it. I did use a couple of yards of it

Bleh. I tried the generic Chinese brand which aced the tests in this video... No dice. It did not last even an hour. Back to the drawing board.
