I've been collecting chips for awhile now. At one point I had too many sets, but that's beyond the point. My question is, how long do you keep a set? I've gotten countless sets including some sets that I thought I was "attached to". Once I found a set that I actually am attached to (my semi-custom Grandpa's Rounds set), I actually realized I the attachment I thought I felt wasn't the same.

With all that being said, I'm really just curious, how long on average do people keep sets before detaching and eventually releasing them into the wild. Just curious.

Forever. I've said this before, but I've found rotating many sets help prevent fatigue from any one set. When I had less sets I found I started to find some sets lost my interest but when I rotated several sets (7 or 8 sets) I enjoyed all my sets more.

Being in Canada makes it harder to buy/sell sets more often which means having a bit more discretion when buying a new set. I am amazed at how quickly some users buy and sell their sets, especially when they go crazy pumping prices up when new chips come out just to sell them shortly after.

I think I’ve bought every full set I’ve owned with the intent to keep them forever. That being said, I have sold several sets within 3 years of owning them, each time replacing it with another set that I liked more for the same purpose.

Currently at 3 sets, purchased in 2016, 2017, and 2024. I suppose 4 if you count my faux clay plastic set that is now essentially LEGOs for my kids (from the blue wall days, no idea on the year.)

I don’t think I’ll actually keep any of the 3 forever. It’s been years since I’ve hosted a game, and purpose eventually outweighs nostalgia, especially if you need to get some money for something.

Depends on the set. My PCA’s I’ve had since I bought them during the original Chiproom sale. Casino used sets that I hoped I’d like have lasted a short as a single game then were moved on from. In general I keeps sets and have increased my total collection size.

WHAT???
Are you saying some people get rid of chip sets???

Never heard of such a thing happening. :)

My semi custom set is the set that I finally feel real attachment. I thought I was in love with other set, and I think I only have 2 regrets.

1.) Selling my AQ set and
2.) Not buying a set from @detroitdad that I would have really really really loved!

Oldest set I own now is 1.5 years? Although only 3 racks of the original set remains. The other pieces have been upgraded/changed out.

Some racks I buy I keep for months then sell... some I don't even see before selling. Some for days or weeks.

Usually if I like a set I'll keep it.

I keep a set until it sells .. really the only set that I have kept for any amount of time is my Nevada Jack clay from BCC. I recently even sold the original ASM Nevada Jack clays.

I had my first set for 20 years and then I decided I wanted a custom set and found this place. In the 10 months since then I have bought five more sets, sold three of them and my original set and have a growing closet full of random racks that I'm not entirely sure what I am going to do with them yet. But its been a fun ride!

My sunset chips do that for me. Everything else is expendable. I do love my hot stamped bourbons, but other than being "fun", there isn't a special attachment with them.

My work schedule is affecting my hosting and playing. I feel like having 8 sets is way to much!

To me, the chips all serve the same purpose. But certain sets have a sort of “heirloomy” quality that makes them keepers in my house. What defines that is a mix of sentimental value and aesthetics for me.

Currently, my CPC, Roadhouse, HSI secondary, and fun nite sets check those boxes.

I’m always shocked to see people sell their CPC sets, usually under value too. Just keep them! I guess people fall out of hobbies, but I’ve come back to poker enough to know that even if I have a lapse again I’ll be back.
