Hello and thank you in advance.
I'm hosting my 1st Hold'em tournament soon and have a question regarding payouts.
Buy-in: $60
30 people (estimated) = $1800 total

Current:
1 - $600 (33%) - roughly
2 - $350 (19.5%)
3 - $240 (13%)
4 - $190 (10.5%)
5 - $160 (8.5%)
6 - $140 (7.5%)
7 - $120 (6.5%)

Question 1: In all my payout structures, I have the minimum payout equivalent to doubling your buy-in. Is that a good plan or is that too much?
Question 2: This is a home tournament with friends. Is paying 20-25% of the field too many?

There will be a few experienced members that will give great advice on this.

That said, I love this structure. I think paying that many is great. Allows not so strong players a chance to get in the money.

But damn, dude. Thirty for your first tournament? There's a lot to know to keep these games running smoothly. Good luck, have fun.

Welcome! 30 people for a first tournament can be intimidating, good for you.

1. That would be too much for us, but whatever works for you guys. The first payout is usually little bit more than money back for us. If the last payout is double I'd make it top 5.

2. All personal but we would shoot to have 5. 7 isn't bad.

Personal choice:
1st: $720 (40)
2nd: $450 (25)
3rd: $270 (15)
4th: $180 (10)
5th: $90 (5)
6th: $90 (5)

We like it more top heavy while the first few payouts are more than buyin but not a significant part of the pot.

I modeled your proposed payout structure in my payout calculator available here

This calculator is designed to help create what, IMHO, are fair payout structures. By fair I mean the payouts are calculated based on a % versus being arbitrarily chosen. The easiest way to explain it is that you choose what % drop in prize money want to implement between the payout levels. Let's say you pick 30%. If you have 30 buyins and want to pay prizes to 23% of the buyins (7 divided by 30), the calculator will tell you what 1st place should be and then second place will be 30% less than first and third place with 30% less than second and 7th place will be 30% less than 6th place. So it doesn't implement a top heavy payout structure which my gang is happy about.

here's what my calculator put together for your configuration - 7th place is $120 (2x the buyin) and all the other places are 20% more than the place underneath!

So, the proposed payout structure is quite top heavy for first place.

I have been experimenting with payout structures in Excel for probably 20-30 hours in the last month. If you came up with this on your own, I’d be very impressed. Regardless, it is a very good structure, and would suggest you use that. 20-25% is not too many to pay, especially in a casual game.

I like the payout structure. I would probably pay the top 5-6, but yours is fine, and the min cash should always be at least 1.5x a buyin imo. I would rather gamble more to try to win something than just get my money back.

IMHO paying 7 positions for 30 peops is one too many.

Like everything else I do in poker, I have a spreadsheet for this.

My only self-imposed guideline is that the bottom payout gets at least double the buy in.

Here is what I came up with and use. I prefer to pay more places and spread the money out a bit more than some payout schedules. The more winners that you have the more they are likely to come back again.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I truly appreciate it.
After some consideration, I'm going to adjust my structure slightly. Minimum payments around x1.5 buy-in rather than x2. Give that extra money to the top winners.

I also want to say how grateful I am for this site. I've always wanted to host a tournament and found the courage finally to do so.
Some great information on aspects like; Poker chips, cards, dealer buttons, blind structures, pay structures, poker timer and even how to manage tables when players are eliminated.

I realize if I want this to be a regular thing, I only get 1 chance to make an impression.
I intend to do just that. And your responses help. Thanks.

Love this, are your percents arbitrary once you get to 19+ players or did you have a rationale?
