Good morning PCF,

I decided to roll the dice on a storage auction when some paper chip boxes caught my eye. Paper boxes = the potential for vintage score in my mind. I scooped these for a good price and will end up paying more in shipping than I paid for the lot. Assuming each box is full looks like ~1000 chips so won't be mad regardless of the outcome.

I had to make the decision based on the pictures below, no additional description of the boxes contents or additional pictures of the chips. Tried asking the auctioneer for a picture of an individual chip after the auction but the request seems to have gotten lost in email translation. So until I have them in hand, it'll be a total mystery (assuming no one can identify them from the side profile and box alone).

Based on this alone, what do you think the over under is for these having any potential? Wait and see!

The edges look a little rounded and not glossy which might be a good sign. Plastic doesn’t turn into bike tires, it falls apart first.

I thought the same thing. Depending on the photos too, plastic usually has that noticable shine or has some plastic flashing coming off.

I'd be surprised if those boxes didn't contain vintage clay. But more often than not, vintage clay is not gold. Still worth a shot, just for fun.
FWIW, those 4x25 boxes make me think TRK, but I might be terribly wrong about that - I'm no expert.
That is fair but I guess that depends on your definition for gold and the fact that I am a novice chipper. A 1000 playable set for less than the cost of Friday nights dinner for two? Feels like gold to me Especially for someone who has an inclination to collect anything and everything.

I don't ever remember seeing those "wood grain" chip boxes before. If someone has, that could be an identifier for you. It doesn't help that the guy's finger is over the label in that picture.

Based on the box design and this eBay listing, I'm guessing that your purchase will have more than a few Large Square (LGSQUR, MD-45) mold chips by Jones Bros.
I think this is a good guess, I did see these while trying to find similar paper boxes online to compare too. Like @KingZilla said, this could be a decent identifier. It does look like the labels on eBay listing and the label on the box in the photos is a little different but that doesn't mean they're not large square.

You're right. And I should have added an "eye of the beholder" comment in there. Clay is clay and you’re lucky if you get to put clay into play.

I’ve seen them over the years. I’ve only got one and it doesn’t have any label on it. I never assumed they were specific to one manufacturer, but who knows?

I had about a thousand faux clay delivered to me once in those boxes. I also associate them with diecar chips for some reason.

So, what was in that box?

I can't imagine. Just chips I bought from another PCFer (or possibly spinettis) sometime in the last 9 years, which would make them most likely Paulsons (or possibly BCCs or Chipcos) but almost certainly not the original inhabitants of that box.

I'm willing to bet decent compression clays. All solids could mean generic roulettes, or Starbursts. The typical cash denom colours could also mean fun nites, deLer school chips, random initials.
I would consider those all great outcomes. Playable and in decent condition would be all I could really ask for. Also not getting to know what they are is half the fun
