When can you refer to a hand as the "Nut XYZ"? (2 Viewers)

Simple question. If you have the highest straight on a board, and the board makes a flush possible. Can you say you have the "nut straight"?

Similarly, if you have an ace high flush, and the board pairs, can you say you have the "nut flush"?

No "Until". Just "Nut XYZ" when revealing the hand or some similar reference.

Easy to understand that "nut flush" isn't necessary "the nut hand" overall. But perhaps your query is out of concern of possible angling? Someone stating nut flush hoping an opponent folds better?

I'm not sure what you're asking but people often refer to the nut flush as the ace high flush even if the board is paired or even if a straight flush is possible, it would still be normal to call the ace high flush the nut flush. Squares, Nits and nubs might disagree.

It's also common to hear people say "nut low" when you have the worst possible hand.

Top pair is generally in relation to the board, IE jacks on a jack high board. But pocket aces would still be the nut pair in that case.

The best possible pair on the board is usually referred to as "top pair top kicker" or "top top" never nut anything.

You haven't played enough circus. It's possible for an ace-high flush to not be the nut flush

I have always used the term nut x, as in the highest possible straight or flush regardless if the hands were the actual nuts. Never used it in relation to any other hand, i.e it’s not ”nut boat”, it’s top boat imo. Similarily, it’s not ”nut set”, it’s top set. Quads are just quads and if you have my low end straight flush beat it’s not a ”nut straight flush”, it’s ”fuck off”.

I also use the term lock hand. Like when you have KQ on a KKQ83 board. While it isn’t technically the “nuts”, it can’t be beat, only tied, so I would refer to that as a lock hand.

I think people often say nut flush and nut straight (even if it’s not the nuts) bc the other player could have a flush/straight and it’s just being polite to announce you have the best of that hand.

It’s more uncommon for multiple players to have two pair, two full houses, etc. hence no need to say “nut full house? But they say top?”
