Not an S. Manual. Hydraulic steering. Blaze orange. It has been more or less sitting in a garage for the last 9 years. Only a few thousand miles put on including a trip from Texas to SoCal and recently a trip up to NorCal. Needs some maintenance and a detail for sure.

Very nice. The road feel you get with hydraulic steering has yet to be well replicated in the modern drive-by-wire systems in modern cars IMO.
I still kick myself for passing on this beauty 3 or 4 years ago.

What year did they all start using the hydraulic steering? If I'm looking myself and want to stay old school, what years should I focus on?

On the Caymans the 987.1 (2005-2008) and 987.2 (2009-2012) had hydraulic steering, but with the redesign in the following 981 generation (2012-2016) they went to an electric steering rack. I believe it was similar with the Boxsters, but I'm not 100% sure. Also, the Boxter launched earlier than the Cayman so I'd imagine that the earlier 986 generation of Boxster also had hydralic steering.

If at all possible (which often it is not), try and find a 987.2...they included some improved aesthetic details (headlights/tailights/stereo etc) and more importantly an engine redesign that did away with the potential IMS bearing and bore scoring issues sometimes seen in the 987.1's. But also keep in mind that the internet would have you believe that these were widespread issues in the generation when in reality I think it was something like 4% of cars that had those problems. It could be scary though because an IMS failure would completely grenade the engine.

Also, if you're planning to get an automatic, the 987.2 was the first platform to include PDK. The earlier gens didn't have bad transmissions or anything, it's just that PDK is often considered one of the best dual clutch automatics on the road. This is moot point if you're getting a manual though.

Depends on the car. Hydraulic steering was the standard until electric came around. When the transition happened depends on the car. Boxsters switched to electric steering by 3rd generation (early 2010s). All 4 of my previous 2 seaters have/had hydraulic steering. All my kid mobiles have electric steering. I can’t say it’s necessarily worth chasing down an older model just for that by itself. Porsche today has some simulated feedback steering.

That's a really good point. Electric vs hydraulic steering is one of those things that could be a huge difference for you or be completely unnoticeable. To me it's thing worthy of consideration...to a my buddy of mine (who is also definitely into cars), there is absolutely no difference.

Also, the type of car comes into play. My Mustang GT has electric steering and I don't give 2 shits because that car is designed to be 450hp of American "Hell yeah, Brother" straight line speed. It's long, it's heavy, and it corners like a pig with a rocket stuck in its ass.

Thanks. Yeah, I did a little surfing after I asked the question and also came to the conclusion that the 2009-2012s would be worth seeking out, but that it's not a game changer to end up with one a few years earlier.

Blasphemy! LOL. Yeah, the whole point of getting a sports car is to have a manual again. I'm not planning to get rid of my truck either, so I won't be driving it every day. My first non-manual in many years was an Audi. I don't think it had a dual clutch, but it was a very good transmission with paddle shifters. Honestly, it was always in the right gear when I needed it, and was a joy to drive. So I rarely used the "manual" mode. A dual clutch may give superior performance, but I'm more interested in the full sports car driving experience, which to me means having a manual.
 
Not sure I ever shared this on this thread, M5 was long my dream car and I was able to get a beautiful spec'ed model last year. Frozen Brilliant White wrapped in Aragon Brown Leather. Carbon fiber everything, with a full M titanium exhaust setup. The smiles per gallon are real. I also picked up a photography hobby so I've been enjoying that as well! Sadly had to compress these files to get them to load as they are 70-100mb files lol. Camera is a 51mp powerhouse and I shoot raw baby :cool.

Not sure how heavy you want to get into the photo stuff, but if you want to get a polarizer for your lens that would take care of that glare on the front windshield.

Just a few examples of mine from a few years ago. Beautiful pictures! What camera did you end up getting?

Dope stance! I have a CPL filter. I just don't always carry it with me as sometimes I just grab the camera spur of the moment and head out. Trust me I'm neck deep into it lol. Roughly 20k in lenses and equipment in like 7-8 months. It's just as bad as chipping haha

Camera I am running a Sony A1 with a A6700 as my backup body. Lens are below, all Sony no 3rd party.

16-35gmii for video work mostly. I don't love wide angle photos.

Nice! I picked myself a Sony A7rii back when I was just getting into college. Then upgraded and got a Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lens which is by far my favorite lens to date. I've been thinking about potentially picking up a 18-35mm 1.8 for my videos.

Other than that love my camera to death. Best purchase I've made in a long long time.

The Sigma art lenses are fantastic. I had a 24-70 and it took incredible photos. Tack sharp. In terms of third party lenses I think Sigma is the best performance to value you can buy. The Sony lenses are fairly inflated for diminishing returns honestly lol.

I agree having a sick camera is just a ton of fun. You can take photos of legit anything and it looks dope

You do some amazing work man. They're all freaking gorgeous...but I gotta say that the Fairlane GT has a special place in my heart.

Fantastic cars. I especially love the red 'bird (my first car was a '72 firebird, posted here somewhere) and the Ford truck. That was an amazing transformation!

Is the Fairlane Highland green? Been trying to get paint codes and samples but nothing I get seems to make me happy for my project.

Yeah, the Fairlane was Highland green. The F350, I chose the green that Ford used for the Anniversary Steve McQueen mustang that came out back in the earlier 2000s (can't remember year... lol). Firebird was Pontiac Carousel Red which is the same as Chevy Hugger orange.

In the truck photos, you can see one of my truck and Fairlane at the same car show and you can see the differences in the greens.
