Hi,
as there are a few DIY guys like @GreekRedEye here, i‘ll post a ‚how to‘ get a mimic chip out of polymer clay like Fimo or Cernit.
The colors are very disco, but it‘s what‘s left ; )
If you have any questions - ask.
Let‘s go!

Here‘s all you need. Puncher used are 30/60mm

Flat out the clay, and place the washer.
I use two wood sticks as limiter.

Flat out 2nd layer of clay.

Place on top an flatten out with the limiter.
IMG_5682.jpeg

Place the punch in center, and let a shallow mark in the clay.
IMG_5683.jpeg

Cut out all the pieces you need.

Punch the chip out. Take care to be dead center, or almost ; )

Now it‘s ready for a sauna.
30 min 230 F/110 C let cooling down, and bring it in shape with some sandpaper (80/120/240/600 grid)
Place a label, try a hotstamp or laser engraving, or simply let it blank.

Here’s the final result
58/6,5mm 44g

danke schoen! I'm impressed how precise and consistent your finished product is, given all the work is manual. I am not sure how you use the 2 sticks as limiters. Do you place a third board across those sticks and use that to flatten the clay?

Bitte gerne! ; )
Just flatten the clay between two even high bars with a roller (can). It automatically gets nice and flat. For the 68mm i use 9mm bars, for 58mm i place something under to get to ~7,5mm.

Then sand down ~1mm each side and around to get the even, smooth finish chip.

Would love to see other people‘s approach and/or results!
Especially if you try a laser engraving or other cool ideas.

Good luck!
Looks nice

I cut this mold last night:

I think it needs to be a bit deeper. Also will try making it out of some more uniform material. And will have to spray paint or varnish it before using so that the char doesn’t transfer to the clay.

Yes, i think the imprint should be a bit more, if you sand it down.
Or the mold is perfect flat smooth.
Actually i would try to create a negative print of the chip, the mold itself.
This is a good stamp for the mold pattern.
A recess for the inlay would be nice too!

But great to see other guys attempts and ideas!

Did this one on acrylic so I could wash it before use and it doesn’t have any grain. I also added the indent for the inlay. Now the question is should I cut another to make it double sided?

looks like you just made yourself a die to press into other things for imprinting..... cool

The steel washer inside should help not to break.
For sure you can break off parts with force, like every chip.

I‘ll do a test…

When it falls on concrete from table, right on the edge, there‘s a scratch (like a flea-bite).

It can break when falling from 8ft, right on the edge (on concrete).

In normal use there should be no problem.

Interesting move here…
Shout out to @matthewb, he pushed the bar way higher with his design of a ‚chip-diy-mold‘ press.
Brilliant design - hope it works!
It looks promising, and can‘t wait to get it printed and tested out…!

Paulson and CPC in shambles right now. lol

Does anyone have any good info for release agents? When I tried it out, I used baby powder/cornstarch and had some trouble with the clay sticking. I've already made @SwissChip aware of this, and I posted photos of the stuck clay above, but it lacked context!

Would be nice if anyone can chime in here! It'll be the difference between good and great :)
