About to get this party started. 1oz pours today. And we will probably get into the other Irish I have tomorrow.

All amazing pours, enjoy!

IMHO green spot is the best 'easy to get' whiskey anyone can drink. I give a bottle of that stuff away every few months to people who 'think irish is boring'. I've never not had them coming back for more.

I've been mostly drinking scotch over the winter, but as the sun returns so does my love of the irish single pot still whiskey.

This is amazing whiskey for the price. Highly recommend.

My contribution to St.Paddy’s day

Don’t judge…it’s the only drop of Irish whiskey in the house and I only have it because a cash game player passed these out when he found out him and his wife were expecting their second child. The due date was supposed to be today but she had to deliver a few days earlier.

I can honestly say that this is the first pour of any Irish whiskey that I’ve ever had. Just never interested me. As for what’s in the glass, I like it. It’s not mind blowing good, but it has a nice green apple pie note with a traditional dough crust. Get a little vanilla ice cream on top as well. It’s a touch thin compared to the high proof bourbon and ryes I typically drink but it’s very drinkable and refreshing. I’m also well aware that there are much better Irish whiskies out there. Hope I didn’t just open a new can of worms  :ROFLMAO:

Oh yeah...

I was afraid of that lol

Ok…let’s just say for shits and giggles that I think I’d like to try a quality cask strength Irish. Suggestions? I’m pretty sure my local has Redbreast 12yr cask but it’s not like I really spend any time in that aisle other than walking thru it to get to the bourbons and ryes.

What should I be looking for?

Redbreast 12yr cask is excellent. It's a great place to start or end.

Love that Pour!!!
I do as well but the bigger surprise for me was how much better the 12yr is over the 9 and that the 12 wasn’t really that far behind the 18yr except for price:cool

When I find the 12yr, they’re at retail. I can pretty much get 3 of them for the price of one 18yr. Will my dumb ass buy another 18 if I find it reasonably priced…100% yes I will but honestly I think I’d rather have 3 backups of 12yr for the money. The 18 is fantastic but 12yr is definitely the sweet spot for me.

Redbreast 12 Cask Strength is my favorite, and at least around here that bottle is attainable at a decent price <$100. I've heard amazing things about the Spot series as well, just haven't had them yet. I now have bottles of the green and blue, they're on my shortlist to try after Lent (T minus 13 days....)

I also really dig Teeling Blackpitts Peated Signle Malt.

I would default to @JustDave for further recommendations, I think he's our PCF Irish Whiskey connoisseur.

It’s awesome when you find a pour you love at a value. I love ECBP and stopped chasing other BPs due to them not being any better…well except OF SBBP and EHT BP and Stagg Jr…never mind, I have a problem.

12 CS is a mainstay 100%. I'm not like 'it has to be super high proof' as long as it isn't watered down to be as cheap as it can be, but the Redbreast 12 leaves a bit to be desired when you know the 12 CS exists.

The spots are great. Spots and Redbreasts are both middleton products, both made in the same distillery just a bit differently and finished differently. Green spot and redbreast 12 are both great ways to wander into pot still irish whiskey and figure out if you like that style of whiskey. Irish, at least to me tacks closer to a flavor profile and isn't as all over the map as you can get in other styles of whiskey, so if you like irish whiskey it's the subtle things that set them apart. Redbreasts basically just get older and 'nicer'. It's hard to really call out what makes a 21 year old redbreast 'perfect' accept that it just is simply 'perfect' irish whiskey with zero faults. It's like a really good steak, it doesn't have to be fancy to be perfect.

The spots are more finished, and for the most part not in like crazy big ways like you'd get in some scotches or bourbons. They impart a note or two in the greens, a bit more in the yellow, and the the blue and red spots kinda all bets are off. I know some people rave about the red and blue spots, but for me the best is the yellow. I think the red and blue deviate too much from irish whiskey.

I'm not wild about a column still which almost every Jameson branded product is, with one exception and I frankly can't recommend it enough because it is starting to show up in the states. Jameson single pot still.

Don't pay more than about $60 for it, but it's amazing stuff. I'm really surprised it's branded as a Jameson product as it is awesome.

I wrote a lot more than I intended... but Irish whiskey is frequently overlooked and it really shouldn't be. There are a lot of makers that focus on just making really good whiskey, no crazy finishes or hype, just a really good whiskey done as well as they can.

I love ECBP too…it’s my favorite BP as well but I do need to do a little hunting occasionally for them. They used to be really difficult to find but it has gotten much easier the last couple of years. OF and EHT BPs are unicorns here. Stagg Jr is a leprechaun riding a unicorn that has dentures made of hens teeth  :ROFLMAO:

Thank you! This is exactly the kind of starting point information I was hoping for. I’m 100% guilty as charged for completely overlooking Irish whiskey.

I’m gonna hit up a couple of stores to see just what is available to me but I think I should be able to find a couple of these recommendations.

I don't actually mind folks sleeping on Irish, it means that there is a lot less people hunting it and making prices insane.

The nice thing about it is that if you try Jameson and love it, congrats, you just saved yourself a lot of money. If not you may just not like column still irish, and frankly, I don't really blame you. If you also try redbreast 12 and green spot and don't like either of them I'd hazard a guess you just don't like Irish whiskey, and that's totally fine, I can't stand bourbon, enjoy what you like!

Got lucky in PA before anyone knew about them. Found three on the shelf, drank one, bunkered one and took one to Matt's JinJ 2021 meetup.

@Irish
I was going to say, if that was your bottle from batch #1 you're really nursing it.  :ROFLMAO: The one you brought to the meet-up was toast in no time lol.

I always forget how delicious this Redbreast Kentucky Oak is. So good. So much vanilla. Too bad it’s discontinued.
Oooo now I'm intrigued....

 worth stocking up if one can find a few? Hypothetically, of course....
