How fast do HSI chips get beat up looking? (1 Viewer)

My HSI secondary set saw it’s 60th home game last night and I’ve now owned them for 18 months. A barrel of ones is now a touch shorter than a barrel of all the other denominations. The 5’s, 25’s and 100’s are still all the same height.

They still have very good, fairly sharp edges and I’ve not yet seen any flea bites! The $1’s in particular suffer from some color transfer, but they do clean up pretty easy. I’m hoping my new $1a’s don’t color transfer quite as bad.

There is no "paint". It's actual transfer of base clay material due to repeated scraping. A crime punishable by flogging around here.

Quite true, but the material they're made out of is a dyed mix of plastic and clay. No surprise that they'd leave colored stains on stuff they come in contact with (mainly other chips), the same way that dyed chalk or dyed wax in crayons and colored pencils does.

If you lightly clean or oil just the edges, some of these marks may fade or disappear. I agree with those who say the chips don’t look bad to me. I have a much bigger problem with rounded edges, which in a non-casino environment should take a decade or more to happen if ever.

RHCs do not hold up like THCs. They wear and they wear much quicker than most folks around here like to admit! Take a minty stack of chips and shuffle it a few dozen times on a fresh felt... move the chips to the side and you WILL see pieces "dust" of the main color of the chips you were just shuffling on your felt!

"Decades to round" LMFAO! Sorry but absolutely NOT true. After a casino opens people rush in a week later and already have to start picking through chips to find the minty ones. "Yeah but they use them All day and night" really a week later? Even if "used" every minute of everyday for a week (never going to happen) that's 168 hours of use. Anyone here bank more than 168 hours in a "decade" in thier home game. We sure as hell have.

The key is to have them all wear evenly. But as seen above in a game where your Work Horse chip is a $1 they will wear quicker than the other denoms... just a fact of life.

The Chips in the OP look great. Clean and oil them... they will be ready for action. If you are deathly afraid of color transfer, flea bites, and general markings... then as suggested above, Maybe it's time to go back to plastics, they wear too BTW but typically compensated with a factory rounded edge.

They don't stay "new" for long folks. It absolutely does NOT take thousands of hours to start wearing them down.

"In the safe they go never again to see the light of day" then why own them??

"On a lighted shelf for all to see. But never put in play" then why own them? "They are art work in my card room. I break out the cheap used stuff!" Well that's your right, but not why chips were made. You can buy sample sets and display lots more chips that letting a full usable set sit there and be looked at!

Owning AND PLAYING clay comes with a cost! A cost we all take on as owners. Hence why many players only play their "best chips" at meet ups where other chippers can trully appreciate the efforts, time and value of a quality set.

Buy some CPCs for your regular game, they take much longer to wear down and will last you years, but if sharp and minty is all you care about... I would simply steer clear of clay.

Definitely know they won't stay perfect forever, was just a bit shocked to see that in 2 games they had picked up more wear than my THC set had in 2 years...

Well for the record I wouldn't call those PCA's "mint" either. They look like they are in fantastic "slightly broke in" condition. When those corners wear ever so slightly that's when the magic happens for us Shufflers. I honestly belive the majority of the "dead mint only" squad are not really shufflers because MI chips absolutely SUCK for Shuffling.

@FordPickup92 my amazing better half has owned her PCAs about 3 years now, I would say we average 2 - 3 games a year on those and ok 9 - 10 games is not a great comparison but yes Leaded THCs are absolutely going to hold up to the test of time much better than today's clay chips. Yet another example of the old phrase "they don't make em like they used to!" Rings loud and proud yet again.

Again IMO it is all about a healthy rotation of chips. I have about $9k invested in this set of RHC/IHC chips

I am aware that it doesn't take long to "knock the new off" meaning destroy the minty value and at that point the chips are used... but I didn't buy the set to look pretty on a shelf. Washed and oiled brand spanking new... two days later they were in the felt at a meet up with other chippers to enjoy

I would say these are "special occasion only" chips. But if someone request them for a game I would never say no. But I'm not overly worried about the investment, I want to play nice chips and willing to take that decrease in value.

There are those here that would argue with me on cleaning and oiling your chips but I do whole heartedly believe that conditioning chips keeps them in better shape and helps them hold up over time. There are plenty of threads here you can reaserch about oiling chips. All of that color transfer will come off with a quick wash in Dish soap, warm water and a magic eraser.

Again invest and protect hoe you see fit. If you plan on these being your "go to" every Friday night chip set then you may want to consider something that will hold up a bit better, if you are looking for that bright WOW factor of those HSI sec $5s for the occasional game then I think they will work out perfect!

I mean the fact that he said the chips have different ammounts of paint on them makes me think that maybe this was just a drunk memeber having a good Labor Day laugh to be honest. The whole post is just so absurd all things considered. Like the guy comes to the community of people who spend thousands on sets and singles and then argues with them about the condition of the chips?!?!? Who’s going to know better people who’ve been doing this since I was born or the new person? The guy prolly couldn’t tell the difference between a leaded and unleaded chip if you put it on a scale.
