Storing China Clays - will it loose color in acrylic case? Is wooden/aluminum case a must? (1 Viewer)

I'm seriously considering a set of Crazy Horse (rebadged Majestics), but after watching a lot of videos I'm somewhat concerned with chips loosing color over time if I don't keep them in a wooden or aluminum case.

I know that keeping the box in a closed cabinet all the time will obviously do the trick no matter what, but I don't want to loose my mind over keeping them out occasionally and looking where the sun is... Also, I have a lot of glass door cabinets and that is where it would probably go. Therefore it will stay off direct sunlight, but there will be indirect light reaching the chips.

Am I overreacting? Is this a big deal? Did anyone here deal with this?

The reason for asking is that I hate the aluminum box I have right now for my set of 650 chips. It's disgusting inside (thin plastic insert) and it's tippy. I strongly prefer either the acrylic 600 pcs case or the wooden 500 pcs cases. I can afford 600 chips, so would rather go with that, but if I need to loose my mind over chips loosing color over time, I would rather take the smaller set and wooden, dark box.

The chips will be used occasionally - 2-3 times a month, so I might loose the sight of them and have them sit over a week behind a glass window, off direct sun but still exposed to indirect sunlight. I have kids, so they might leave the cabinet open sometimes or make a mess... I don't care about loosing a couple of chips, but if half of them partially discolor on one side, I will loose my mind...

As for why do I want CC if I'm concerned with this - I have been playing with samples for a couple of days now and I simply LOVE the touch. At the same time I can't stand the inconsistency of the ceramics (some look sharper, higher resolution than others, also, hate insufficient contrast between Scroll 100 and 500 chips) and plastic ones I already have, so it won't be much of an upgrade. Or am I missing something?

I'm open to suggestions :)

Thanks!

That’s an interesting one… I never gave it much thought. I had my majestics for a few years and even shipped them back from the UK when I moved back to Australia and they always maintained their colour. I kept mine in open racks.

They were definitely exposed to sunlight, but never noticed any fading over the 2-3 years I had them.

There have been a number of posts about fading for the Crazy Horse / Milano chips (same chips, different label). Based on the posts I saw in a search, the pink chips seem most prone to fading over time, regardless of how they are stored.

I had milanos for several years in a cheap case and they never lost any color.

One potentially expensive option, replace the glass in the case you are storing them, with either UV glass or that UV film. I suppose you could apply the latter to case itself.

I ultimately decided to go with an aluminum case. Nice thing was that the nominally 650 case could in fact fit 700 chips…
