Tourney What do busted players do? (1 Viewer)

Bitch and whine, comment on the continuing play, take a lot of shit from the remaining players, drink your liquor, eat the remaining snacks, talk about the next time, remind everyone it was the right call/bet/push, etc.... Then wait for others to bust to start a cash game.
 
Lots more. If you've not waiting for chips to be delivered in the post at any time you're not doing it right.

We have run Multi-table tournaments for the past 12 years. This is the formula that works for us...

  • Food and drinks pre-game. This is social time, which is what our players are here for.
  • Each player gets 1 rebuy if necessary.
  • Rebuying player does not need to be felted. You may sacrifice any chips you have and get a fresh stack. This prevents the shove with anything if you are down to a handful of Big Blinds and the rebuy clock is running out.
  • A rebuy gives a player a larger than starting stack (110%)
  • Rebuy period runs for 2 hours in a 4.5(ish) tournament. It ends during a break, so players may make the sacrifice/rebuy decision without pressure.
  • When returning from the break, a player sitting on their original starting stack has roughly 16-17 Big Blinds. A rebuy stack has 18-19 BB.
  • We invite players and their spouses. It's good for the game (helps it grow), and a KOed player is more likely to rebuy if it appears their spouse will still be in for a while. It also gives eliminated players an excuse to hang out longer, as there are other people to chat with as eliminated spouses have a reason to hang out longer.
Many players will sit and deal for the table. Others will become dedicated shufflers for the dealer, making their job easier. Some, as mentioned, will just hang out and socialize. Others will head out. They have had about an hour pregame to hang out, and the late rebuy gives most everyone 2 hours of game time for a 3 hour night - more than you would get by going to a movie.

Since we started keeping records on knockouts over the last 61 tournaments, we have only had 33 players that spent their second bullet before the 2nd break (roughly 2.6% of all players). 4 of those 33 (12%) were in a short-stack tournament.

We have only run 1 short stack tournament to date.
 
I will also note - we never run a cash game afterwards, unless it is a freeze-out event. I find that the promise of a cash game allows a skilled deep-pocketed individual to play recklessly in the tournament, because they stand to make more in the cash game. This "bullys" less skilled players (the spouses of the actual players), which makes it less appealing for them to return.

This is an interesting insight. Thanks for this. As a tourney noob, I would have never considered this. :tup:
