My friends are being jerks because I spent a lot of money on a new set. Advice? (3 Viewers)

Enjoy your chips. They are mostly for you and for as many of your friends that act as assholes, there will be others who say “cool chips”.

So prove them wrong. Reach out to as many other friends as you can and try to setup a full ring low stakes game or fun “learn poker” night. Maybe a theme night like Cinco de Mayo poker party (DDLM chips will be great). Besides getting to enjoy your chips, you might make some more friends and start building up a regular poker group.

did you buy the chips to impress them? if yes then sadly I understand your frustration: you failed. Did you buy them for you because you like them? then no reason to be frustrated you succeeded. At this point have fun with them talking about how stupid you are for puting that much money into chips. You will feel better. And at some point when you really start beleiving your jokes (that you are stupid) then just come back here to see how stupid we all are! :p

If you are the best player in the group you will be spending money you won from them anyways to pay for your chips.

My group recently (jokingly) asked for a catalog of poker room upgrades they could choose from that I would use the money I win from them to buy.

I feel that so many people make bad financial decisions without even knowing it. Eg. Paying way too much for a cellphone or cell plan. If most Canadians would buy a midrange phone outright and shop around for a plan, they'd save enough for OPs set of chips in about 2-3 years.

Best post ever!!

Hey, our group was always overly impressed for 15 years with my crappy "Welcome To Vegas" 14g slugged 500 chip set that cost like $60...

I have been asked for years... hey Ben can you bring "the good chips" lol and the appreciation I was shown not to have to play with damn dice chips was awesome. As you can see I added on with way too many denoms and even mixed sets... what a mess and totally threw that money away! Still have the set but even before joining the forum a couple years ago I always wanted to upgrade again and try to get the game going again. I decided I could afford Monte Carlo 14g chips

Again way too many denoms and chips but se had our first game in years and everyone absolutely loved them.

Again even at $.16 a chip that is way better than most home games. Like others have said here you are in this hobby for YOU. Of course we all want our peers to appreciate what money, time and effort we put into upgrading the game but it is never going to happen through chips. A nice table and chairs will go 100 times further than chips ever will.

And next time they want to complain tell them this idiot Ben on PCF has $15 plus grand invested in some fantasy chips that coul be bought for $1 each in 2014! Show this this pic

And can cover 100 players and never has more than 10 in his game so shut up!! Also him and his girl own 28 playable sets and have a car in the driveway that has needed a transmission for almost 2 years!! Lmao

For the record we play in other games that are up to 40 players but that is beside the point. Build your collection how you want!

Ohh to be 18 again... my response would definitely be... that's poket change bro, I have spent way more than that on dates with your girl! Now that s**t gets expensive!! Lmao I promise by 24 you will not give 2 f*cks about their opinions anymore!

Live your life how you want to live bro, don't let the world tell you what you should and shouldn't do with YOUR money! It's always less than hookers and cocaine and while that can be a fantastic evening you have nothing to show for it afterwards except things that don't wash off.. don't believe me? Ask Charlie Sheen

wish I found this hobby 20 years ago (I'm 38) I probably wouldn't have a house but damn the collection would be sick right now!! Haha

@Ben8257 if you got into this Hobby 20 years ago think how many awesome chip sets you would have and the prices you would of gotten them. You probably could of sold a bunch of them and got a house for sure and still have some nice sets.

Pretty damn happy where we are now, it is sick to think of the prices now vs back then but nothing we can do about it. We have been very fortunate to build the collection to where it is now and don't foresee it growing much more anytime soon. But then again this hobby is a sickness, never say never! Lol

I used to play in a weekly game. I took notes in a little notepad. One day a guy started making fun of my notetaking. I told him "you keep giggling over there, and I'll start writing notes on all the twenty-dollar bills you keep dumping to me". That kinda stopped that shit.

So yeah, just tell 'em you got to spend their money on something. Why not nice chips?

Tell them to eat a dick.

Unless you are like spending your rent money on chips or going into debt for chips, it's really no one's concern what you spend your time/money on for hobbies.

Answer is simple: buy a hot dog roller to change the narrative! Only those who choose to embrace your chip purchase decision can have a dog, brat, taquito, spring roll, corndog, etc....
I agree!! The best way to change someone's mind is to bribe them with a hotdog sandwich!

That's the thing, really, right? It would have been nice if your buddies could have appreciated your new set. I'd have been annoyed at them too. But that's one of the sad truths we learn early on - you're lucky if anyone else at your table enjoys good chips the way you do. Sometimes it happens, and sometimes it takes time to happen, but sometimes it never happens.

That's okay. The guys at the table are your poker buddies. Your poker chip buddies are right here.

Get some cheap interlocking plastic chips in red, white, and blue only. Use coins for the missing denominations. Then host games with those for a while. Tell them cheap is better. Use old blackjack cards that have clipped corners and have been drilled. Don't use a dealer button because “the dealer knows who he is”. Host only on Formica tops, and encourage drinks on the table.

Just kidding, just enjoy your chips and they will come around.

Lol I actually have some of those interlocking chips! My Dad got them for me from my dead great aunt's house. That's when it all started for me. I figured out how to play poker with my friends one night and became hooked!

I have friends who buy snow mobiles and jet skis. I think they’re idiots.
Oh, you know what's important? I'd never tell them that. Because my opinion of how they spend their money couldn't matter any less to me, to them or to the world.

I'll respond to this with a slightly different angle. Just some random thoughts that popped into my head.

When I was your age, I would have never imagined spending that much on poker chips. My biggest single purchase for a hobby when I was 18 was probably around $400 for a decent set of golf clubs. (maybe $1000 in today's money). [However, 20+ years later, I've spent much, much, much, more than that on poker chip sets for my collection.]

I don't know if your friends are in the same financial standing as you, but be grateful if you can afford those things at your age. If your friend s aren't in the same financial standing as you with money to spend, maybe they just feel a little different about it than you.

Theoretical example -- I'm not sure how I'd would have reacted at age 18 if one of my friends showed off his set of $1700 golf clubs, when I only had a set worth $400 back in the day. Or if I didn't play golf that much, how I would have reacted to one of my friends showing off his set of $1700 golf clubs.

There might be a fine line between your genuine excitement for (expensive) things that you truly enjoy and what some of your friends might see as showing off and/or thinking your spending was irrational. (I don't know.)

Your friends may think that what they are telling you is in your best interest (to prevent what they may see as 'overspending' in the future?), even if they are being overly critical, and not letting things drop.

Not that this will necessarily help, but you can consider your purchase as two different, smaller, poker chip sets, that will last a lifetime, and you went ahead and bought extra matching chips, for a possible expansion of your game from one table to 20 players in the future.

Depending on the denominations, customization, chip breakdowns, etc., these chips might hold a decent amount of resale value for many years. And there's always an option to split up a two-table set in half, and sell half of it in the future. That's impossible to do with a set of golf clubs.

If any of your friends have expensive tastes or hobbies and spend similar amounts of money on other things, just point out to them that you get the same enjoyment out of nice poker chip sets as they do for skiing equipment, watches, cars, shoes, sneakers, or whatever it may be. They might understand better.

If you want to share enjoyment in nice poker chips, you've come to the right place.

This. 100%

I had a friend come over for a poker game for the first time. I have all my chips on display on a book shelf. He looked around and said "why do you need so many poker chips?"....He loves collecting watches, he probably has 15. I looked at him and said "why do you need more than one watch?"
Poker chips are a lot like watches & I am addicted to both...
Lucky for you that you are only into poker chips and you are still into the relatively cheap ones. Sort of like being into watches and buying your first Seiko Turtle or Sumo or SKX or what ever.

Basically no one notices or cares about either one except you & poker chips are like 1/10-1/1000 the price of watches. You want to talk about a hobby that can get super expensive start collecting AP's & ALS & other higher end watches - forget about Rolex they are peanuts in comparison...
Go check out WUS (www.watchuseek.com) and poke around a little and you will see some of those guys that have collections of hundreds of watches and each one was thousands to tens of thousands of $

Your buddy that owns 15 watches is kinda like me. I try and keep my collection to about a dozen watches, mostly because I told myself that once my 12 pc watchbox is full I have to be on the 1 in, 1 out policy. I struggle with this a bit so I always have a few extras laying about. My guess is that if he is actually into watches that his average purchase price isn't < $500 and it could be so much higher $1,000 or even $10,000 average purchase price is not at all out of question. Even @ $500/watch that is $7,500 and that will buy A LOT of poker chips....

Trying to justice chip purchases to non-chippers is a futile effort.
So true...
Don't even bother trying as it is totally useless

Even though I might have spent a lot of money on chips and related gambling equipment, it's still less than what I've spent on other hobbies. Pick your poison. Become a connoisseur.
Watches, Cars, Golf, Boats etc are a lot more expensive
