So I just spent a considerable amount of my hard-earned money on a new tournament & cash set and I'm super excited. I shared the news with my friends and instead of also being excited because we all enjoy playing poker together, they will not stop criticizing my purchase and telling me how stupid I am for spending so much. (I spent about 1400 CAD for DDLM semi customs, tourney set and cash set each good for 20 players). I'm still standing by my purchase because a) it's my money and b) I thought about this a lot and truly believe it was something I wanted, and c) I can afford it! So I really don't see the problem and I'm just super frustrated that all my friends have been assholes about this.

I will say that they do have one good point, I don't know 20 people that will play poker with me regularly, but I figured that I'm young (18) and I will meet people in school, life, etc, and make connections in the world of home games as I go, (after COVID, of course). People say that the DDLM's are a great durable set that will last many many years. Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I see many great years of poker ahead of me.

So how should I proceed here? Just ignore the hate and move on?

I am excited for you! Those DDLMs are disgustingly fun and gorgeous colors. The truth is that for most of us, our players dont appreciate the chips we buy as much as we do. The reality is that your average player would probable appreciate an upgraded table, seats, beer, food, etc. well before appreciating upgraded chips. We mainly do this for ourselves, but we do hope that they notice the effort and consideration we put into improving the games we host. Maybe they won't and maybe that is why we all keep coming back here to show off our new chips so frequently haha.

FWIW I don't tell my players how much money the chips are worth that they are playing on. They may laugh. But I do make them sit through a long explanation about a new chipset when I get it into play. They at least pay me that respect of listening haha.

Congrats on the awesome DDLMs and welcome... just don't forget the pron pics next post ;)

You're right about covering your game for more players in the future. You may not have 20 people now, but you might in a few years.

I had a friend come over for a poker game for the first time. I have all my chips on display on a book shelf. He looked around and said "why do you need so many poker chips?"....He loves collecting watches, he probably has 15. I looked at him and said "why do you need more than one watch?"

That's a great point! Except poker chips are way better than watches XD

Get new friends
that would be nice, maybe after covid I can go and meet people once again

Trying to justice chip purchases to non-chippers is a futile effort.

Just let them know that what you've spent is a drop in the bucket compared to some of the maniacs on this site. We're talking about tens of thousands of dollars spent on tens of thousands of poker chips. And then tell them to fuck off and mind their own money. Or better yet, tell them it was their money that you won that funded the chips.

There’s plenty of things we spend money on in our lives that we NEED to purchase...that don’t make us happy. This is one of those purchases that makes some of us VERY happy. Others not. Their loss.

Also, ask you friends to remember the last big purchase they made...and if they decided to sell it 5 years from now, what percentage would they get back?
Quality chips don’t depreciate like mostly everything else.

+1 but most of my players do notice and appreciate the sets... but they would lose it if I told them cost lol

Edit: luckily I have one guy who knew all about chips before even I did. So he loves the sets.

Just tell them that they paid for it through their losses lol

I just spent $1300 on a thousand Paulsons. Its your money and you can spend it on whatever you want. If you play enough games and win, the set will pay for itself eventually. No sense in playing all those games with a cheap set.

Same here. Our group played with cheap plastics when I first met them and now they all appreciate the finer setup that Paulsons bring. That said, I’ve never told them how much they cost. One or two have figured it out for themselves after being directed towards PCF by me - one even upgraded his plastics to China clays and the other is currently working with a PCF artist for some custom ceramics, so they’re slowing getting the “chipping” bug too.

A few have asked or made uneducated guesses. I recall one guy remarking on the BTP cash chips, “wow, these are nice. They must have cost a couple hundred dollars!” My reply was simply, “Yeah, something like that.” :ROFLMAO:

I feel ur pain. Most of my poker friends don’t care about the poker chips and are very sick of me talking about chips. Surprisingly, They focus more on the comfort of the chairs and the table. with all that said, the players do like playing with the 43 mm chips thou. Its authentic casino feel and action.

Some, however, like the chips and at least 2 other hosts in the area have purchased sets from me for their games to upgrade their chip sets. So chip lovers outside PCF do exist. I really like using nice chips and love seeing them in action. So I don’t really care what the other players think. I will say that I do not break out the really nice chips for my games. Rather I usually use my original animal house set - which I think is awesome (but the chips are less expensive than the ones used in my animal house 2.0 set). I reserve the really nice chips for if/when I host a PCF game, because I know they will be taken care of and appreciated.

I'll respond to this with a slightly different angle. Just some random thoughts that popped into my head.

When I was your age, I would have never imagined spending that much on poker chips. My biggest single purchase for a hobby when I was 18 was probably around $400 for a decent set of golf clubs. (maybe $1000 in today's money). [However, 20+ years later, I've spent much, much, much, more than that on poker chip sets for my collection.]

I don't know if your friends are in the same financial standing as you, but be grateful if you can afford those things at your age. If your friend s aren't in the same financial standing as you with money to spend, maybe they just feel a little different about it than you.

Theoretical example -- I'm not sure how I'd would have reacted at age 18 if one of my friends showed off his set of $1700 golf clubs, when I only had a set worth $400 back in the day. Or if I didn't play golf that much, how I would have reacted to one of my friends showing off his set of $1700 golf clubs.

There might be a fine line between your genuine excitement for (expensive) things that you truly enjoy and what some of your friends might see as showing off and/or thinking your spending was irrational. (I don't know.)

Your friends may think that what they are telling you is in your best interest (to prevent what they may see as 'overspending' in the future?), even if they are being overly critical, and not letting things drop.

Not that this will necessarily help, but you can consider your purchase as two different, smaller, poker chip sets, that will last a lifetime, and you went ahead and bought extra matching chips, for a possible expansion of your game from one table to 20 players in the future.

Depending on the denominations, customization, chip breakdowns, etc., these chips might hold a decent amount of resale value for many years. And there's always an option to split up a two-table set in half, and sell half of it in the future. That's impossible to do with a set of golf clubs.

If any of your friends have expensive tastes or hobbies and spend similar amounts of money on other things, just point out to them that you get the same enjoyment out of nice poker chip sets as they do for skiing equipment, watches, cars, shoes, sneakers, or whatever it may be. They might understand better.

If you want to share enjoyment in nice poker chips, you've come to the right place.

I think you should not care about their judgement. Everyone is free to enjoy his hard earned money as they want. Don't your friends have also expensive hobbies ? Just revert to them saying you don't criticize them because the spend so munch on this or this.

Also, you did a great choice with ceramics from @ABC Gifts and Awards , they are great and if normally used, they will last many many years... The design is great but it's subjective, the most important thing is that you love it.

The only thing that might make some of your (cash) chips "obsolete" is that your stakes are going higher and that at some point you'd need to replace the lower denomination chips with higher ones.

At the end, I wish you lots of fun with your chips for many years.

Well if ur nog gonna spend your money on things that makes you happy, what is the purpose of money?

Just shake it of, or get new friends, they should support your hobby.

I guess your friends is around ≈18. Some people grow up late and tend to have problem "sticking out" around that age. That's my experiences. But maybe that's just a swedish phenomenon ;)

Me myself is in the final phase purchase more chips than I might need :p I will order chips to have the possibility playing up to 20 players. But I will have to pay additional +25% in VAT. My group Poker-friends is between the age of 35-60, and someone likely will tell me I'm an idiot but they will do it with love :D

Sorry mate but your friends are acting as assholes. You did something nice for people you play with and that is all right. Enjoy your new chips
