OK, here it is, y'all... Pr0n appetit!
The Backstory:
These chips belonged to Joe Beevers: one of the UK's most successful, influential and important poker players of all-time.
One of the founding members of The Hendon Mob and stars of the iconic Late Night Poker TV series, Joe played a huge part in the UK poker boom of the early 2000s.
I can't remember the exact details he told me, but during a Vegas stint in the late '90s (circa 1998), Joe decided he wanted a serious set of chips for his private games in Hendon — all of which took place from the late '90s through the early 2000s.
Many well known players played in those games (using these chips), including all members of The Hendon Mob, and Late Night Poker winners, Hemish Shah, and David 'Devilfish' Ulliott. From what Joe remembers, the biggest individual pot these chips were involved with totalled around about £40,000 ($55,300).
Joe decided to visit the Paulson store in Vegas during his trip to Vegas, recalling a man with bright blonde hair and piercing eyes that served him. Having chosen the chip colours, edge spots, sizes and breakdown he wanted, he then supplied inlay artwork to Paulson — who turned the chips around for him in six weeks.
Although the chips and carry cases in which they were provided weighed an absolute ton, Joe told me that he had absolutely no trouble or hassle in bringing them back to the UK on the plane! Ahhhh, the good old days, eh?
On the subject of the cases, two 1000-chip capacity cases came directly from Paulson with the set, but he didn't know whether or not they were actually made by Paulson. We were fortunate enough to get these, too.
The Breakdown:
Having given Joe a full sample set as something to remember (and for just being a generally top bloke), we were left with the following, very healthy, 2,771-chip breakdown:
493 x £1 / Yellow 4D14
495 x £5 / Red 3D14
1194 x £25 / White 4D14
296 x £100 / Pink 4D14
97 x £500 / Green 4D14 (43mm IHC)
147 x £1,000 / Grey 3TA316 (43mm IHC)
49 x £5,000 / Purple 3TA316 (43mm IHC)
I'd describe about 95% of the chips being near mint to mint, with the other 5% lightly to moderately used. Also pleased to confirm that all chips are indeed leaded — and #stacklikebricks.
