PCF Nostalgia... (5 Viewers)

It feels like PCF has gone from a small community with similar minded hobbyist to a large public site for buying and selling chips. I prefer the old smaller community, so I spend less and less time here. I understand all things change and try to focus on the stuff I am interested in and ignore the rest.

I'm glad I caught the tail end of that. Although in many ways, maybe it was bad for me. It gave me this idea of the way this hobby should be, but caused me a fair bit of angst when it turned out not to be.

I expect it will decline. This past year has brought a lot of people with a lot of time and money on their hands. That has to change.
I wonder how many members we're up to?
Who made that graph that showed the rise of the members over the years? I'd like to see that updated.
I think that was @markleteenie?

I found back 2 CT calendars (2012 & 2013)...I think these were the last ones made.
If I can make a veteran happy with one or two of these...please post here (no dibs, just post you want one / two)

I 'd love one, but I 'm no veteran.
If someone older than me here wants one, they have precedence.

2 more members and we'll cross the 10,000 member number threshold.

It looks like we gained 2674 new members (member numbers) in 2020, which was a 38% increase over total users, just like in 2019.

Thanks @markleteenie ! I’ve only been here since late 2018. However, I’ve recently wondered how many people are here. There’s been an obvious boom in membership.

Many aspects (discussions, availability of chips, prices, tone of some conversations have changed). However, I do still enjoy the vast majority of people here and this chipping thing that we all share!

Yeah I do miss strategy threads (although probably more to do with limited live poker) and design threads.

I joined CT shortly after the Paulson Egyptian GB happened. I had a set stolen that took me down a path of trying to find the culprit but opened my eyes to various sites where I found deals that I picked up which allowed me to get some of the chips that I wanted. I spent a lot of time and energy searching because I thought the hobby was expensive then! Then later I tried to talk Greg out of the pay to play idea that was the beginning of the end there. After that I was one of those trying to convince everyone that CT and PCF could co-exist and was active on both while it was possible. TL/DR: I've been in this for a long time.

Things are just different. I am priced out of the hobby, not because I can't afford to buy chips at what they are going for now, but because I am not willing to pay for chips for what they are going for now. I am lucky and got a ton of chips back in the day that I really love and don't want to get rid of. This has lead me to a point where I'm content with my collection and my activity on the board has decreased significantly. I still enjoy looking at all the chips people post and am still planning to finish one or two sets I currently have in progress... possibly pick up one other, but this shit has gotten crazy. Not just the prices, but the people. Everyone has an opinion on everything and it seems that name calling is almost expected at this point.

It feels to me that everyone is this guy now:

It used to be we were all just a bunch of dorks who liked to have 'real' chips. Now everyone is so busy measuring their dicks they've forgotten that this hobby is only really relevant to the 10K people in the world who have signed up to be members here (and honestly only probably a few hundred are really active).

Just my take, my voice hurts, but that cloud really knows who's boss now.

PS - Looking for racks of RHC Washington state $5 chips.

***Edit*** ^^^ Says the guy that said he's not willing to pay todays prices. :p

This is why I started milling. I couldn't afford any of the current chips... So I was like... Well, I can afford solids and a drill press.

My mom says I'm the coolest PCFer.

Welp, sorry to ruin your forum, I'm one of the new assholes that showed up ;):D

Jokes aside, I have no idea what PCF was like before I got here, but the community has been absolutely incredible to me as a new guy and probably the #1 reason why I have fallen so in love with poker in general since I started playing not too long ago.

I have been provided more information than I know what to do with, had conversations with wonderful people so far, and realized there was so much more out there in the world of poker chips than I realized. I get invited to so many more games since I started coming here because I have sweet chips and am usually the most organized player there that takes care of everything: and I have the forum to thank for that. I am still very, very new to the game, but I don't think I would be this organized, prepared, or even passionate about poker chips/the game in general had I not come here.

Hopefully this place never goes downhill if it hasn't already...but from a guy who just got here, I love this place, and I hope it's here to stay for a long time.

Glad your here @Hairy_Crocodile and I love the name. This post of yours is probably one of the most positive I’ve read in awhile and it’s a refreshing read.
Best wishes to you and your chip/poker journey going forward and thanks for putting a little cheer back in this place. It’s long overdue.

To summarize, my username comes from when I was stationed in Japan, and someone spray painted things all over the concrete a few days before a change of command ceremony. My 1st Sgt was pissed and was screaming at people about the big hairy dick spray painted in the viewing stands, and turned to my buddy and asked him what was so funny about someone spray painting a penis on the concrete. My buddy told him it wasn't a dick, it looked like a hairy crocodile to him, and I lost my shit laughing. Kept the name ever since.

And glad to hear I've done something to help so far on the forum, even if it's just trying to keep spirits up.

And to add onto your best wishes for my journey down the rabbit hole:
I'll be sharing my progress here soon on the forum with my small collection after my next set is made. I have a small T25 set now and a cash set (I want to replace it with 2-3 new things now that I know better). I have a case for a 160 travel set of both a T25 set and mini cash set, it's sweet. I bring it to the bar for people (and even when I have those days) who get knocked out of the free tournament early and still wanna have fun playing cards.

I also am having a custom image made for a ceramic cash set and a T25 set for 2-3 tables. I also just ordered some Paulsons for a small 300 cash set to bring along with me when I set up my friends' tournaments and people wanna play a small cash game after. I dont need it since I am having my customs made, but I want a little of everything in my collection. May also play around with making a ~300-500 chip cash set to tote around with me that uses plaques ($20 and $100's) to keep people interested one day too.

Tommy used to post in a place where another member was named TommyTheCat, and I often confused them for each other when reading the boards.

That is a great story and it sounds like you’ve got lots going on with your chipping journey. Awesome to hear. If you ever have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out. Welcome to PCF.

This is why I started milling. I couldn't afford any of the current chips... So I was like... Well, IF I CANT AFFORD THE CHIPS I WANT, I’LL JIST DESTROY EVERY CHIP I CAN GET NY HANDS ON!!!! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
Fixed that for you.

I agree with a lot of what @ChipEnvy said above. I just remember how AWESOME it was (seemed?) when one of the best/fun things going for the "community" on CT was the Pharaoh china clay group buy. Things just seemed more innocent and pure back then. I mean people were posting pr0n of china clay sets and we were all discussing them and excited about them. Now, you have to post pr0n of "grail" (hate that term) sets only it seems to get any kind of reaction (slight exaggeration but hopefully you get my point).

I get that there have been obviously more chips and more types of chips introduced into the market since then, but my point is that we were all talking about chips regardless of status, cost, etc. It just seems now that there is too much snobbery going on nowadays. For crying out loud, new members are signing up and their first purchase is for $4+/chip Paulsons.

I don't know, just rambling right now sorry.

No, it's true...check the PCA or Empress threads...endless strings of pr0n..every set gets celebrated.
The HSI pr0n thread is just another WTB thread :(

And the fact that new members are willing to spend 3 or 4 per chip...I don't see prices coming down anytime soon.
You can see a change, old 'grail' sets like Olivias, Crystal Park, ... lost some magic and newer 'confetti-styled' chips are hot hotter hotst

Them newbies sure have an expensive taste :D
And the NAGB chips spoiled us too

My first set I got here will always have a special place in my heart, but you are right, I did not think people wanted to see CC pron after reading different threads when I first joined so these pics never made it to PCF. Getting in my first non-dice chip-caliber set was epic for me and the extras thrown in was a great and surprising introduction to the community.

Everyone suggests Paulsons to newbies off of the bat though, so it makes sense that is what is immediately looked at. For most newbies, they/we are only going to know what the standard is at the time of joining. With Chip Room sales also being so seemingly frequent lately and exposing them to very affordable Paulsons off of the bat, this only adds to what the general standard seems to be when joining up.

I am rambling a bit myself now, but we all know the excitement of chipping so seeing others happy with what they obtain/have, regardless if it is CCs, CPCs, Paulsons, etc. (basically anything besides dice chips), is always great and generally what I am reacting to more so than the quality of the chips themselves.

I consider myself a new member to the chipping community. I was not involved with the CT forum as an active member so have no real idea what it was like, but I really enjoy this place. It has changed a lot since I've joined some for worse some for better. I would say the one thing I've noticed real or imagined is that custom sets seem to have fallen off the radar compared to when I first came to PCF. If you know me as a chipper you will know custom sets are my thing, I do love the new milled sets coming out( hate to see certain chips getting milled) and few great CPC sets coming out lately but there just seems to be a disinterest from most of the members now.

After reading this post over it sounds like me just whining that everyone doesn't like what I like lol.
Posting it anyway.

Nice CC pron. The Dunes $1 is one of my very favorite stock chips. Simple but interesting. If there was a Dunes nickel I'd likely have a micro stakes set of them.
