Ah, I remember just a few years ago when PCF was younger, and members living near newly-opened casinos would offer to harvest chips for other members at face value plus shipping.

This contrasts, of course, with today's purely profit motivation, featuring self-centered low-lifes putting newly-harvested chips from newly-opened casinos up for auction -- and others bidding on them.

IMO, the not-so-old days were better, and made PCF better, more like an actual community.

Go away, clouds!

I have only been here a year and a half, which has mostly been Covid related times. I have definitely seen prices and demand noticeably increase over that time. I can’t help but think there may be a Covid correlation.

Does everyone expect the base and chip demand here to grow when people play poker more or to decline because people will be stuck at home less? Serious question.

I was very lucky to have two members who harvested for me at cost. I greatly appreciated it, still have two racks, the other two moved on at the same cost. But I agree with your assessment. The more visible folks and actions tend not to have the most grace (maybe me included).

For new members, they’re only going to know what they witness and experience.

I came for a chip set, stayed for the community, and now I’m right sizing to prepare to be more like the olden day folks, PMs and such. They say you don’t have to look at what you don’t like Larry, but if that’s half the threads and sales, you sadly don’t have much a choice.

On the plus side, those of you around here long enough to be nostalgic have witnessed a Gamestop worthy increase in chip prices from your TCR and other purchases just a couple years back!

Profiteering was alive and kicking long before the pandemic struck (as of Jan 2018, when I joined).
The NAGB disgrace had just happened, apparently.
Neewbies would anyway be skinned if they did not have any acquaintances to guide them through.
Only a handful of people helped me as a noob here. @BELGRADE has been ultra friendly.
@slisk250 sold me chips at fair value, @Jackstraw did sell me rare chips at very fair value, and @inca911 helped me with hosting some chips on their way to @Gear . I 'll never forget their kindness.
When it came to making my custom set, some contributed advice bluntly, while some did so very patiently and politely (basically @Psypher1000 , kudos to him), when my understanding of chip sets was comparable to that of a brick wall.
Best moment was when I met and played, in person, with @Ethan , @Darson and @crussader in beautiful Texas:hearts::hearts:.
I 've threatened other members too with playing live at them:p but this is not the issue here, for the moment.:D:LOL:

It feels like PCF has gone from a small community with similar minded hobbyist to a large public site for buying and selling chips. I prefer the old smaller community, so I spend less and less time here. I understand all things change and try to focus on the stuff I am interested in and ignore the rest.

I can't remember of any of that 'cause I joined the hobby and the forum too late.
Any old-timers are welcome to share grief in sea-side bars in Athens this summer, provided the f*ckin pandemic is tamed.
No clouds to yell at, in Athens, in summer (normally). :p
Drinks on me.:)
I was hoping to be on a cruise over there this summer but looks like I will be postponing that until next year because of the pandemic. I will hit you up if I end up in the area :)

I'm glad I caught the tail end of that. Although in many ways, maybe it was bad for me. It gave me this idea of the way this hobby should be, but caused me a fair bit of angst when it turned out not to be.

I expect it will decline. This past year has brought a lot of people with a lot of time and money on their hands. That has to change.
I wonder how many members we're up to?
Who made that graph that showed the rise of the members over the years? I'd like to see that updated.

With the population spike, I think this is the new normal.

If you have a look back at the earlier posts in the classifieds i think you're right. But in conversations like this i ask myself Am i making this forum a better or worse place? Its very subjective but the point is we are a self governing forum (mostly) that is made up of allot of people with the same interest. The only one i control is me.

So what sort of environment do I want to make?

The people are awesome. there appears to be plenty of Chiproom Sales and overall with this many people there aren't that many dramas.

Also thank god this site has not gone the way of the old site, (there were good times there too in its heyday) so thanks to "Tommy and the Admins" (makes a good band name) for keeping it going.

Im only new to this forum and wish i had joined sooner seeing how bad the availability of chips is in the EU/UK i know now though when in next in vegas i will taking an extra few thousand to start harvesting those chips. There needs to be more chips this side of the pond
