Warning: German customs office is taking now 50% fee - Realy??? (1 Viewer)

Yeah same here. "Obsolete gaming tokens" as description of the package contents seemed to do the trick so far. Maybe adding "collectibles" somewhere in there might steer them away from the board game classification...?
"Collectibles" are by definition corrupt rich people's luxury toys and you 're going to be punished accordingly by mean, complex-ridden Soviet-style clerks (in the north of Europe) or both Ottoman-and-Soviet- :eek:style clerks (in the southeast of Europe).

Well I don't see how they could be more harsh than taking about 50% in import taxes...

Wow. I paid 290 something Canadian on a order from the USA in Canada that had an appraised value of 2000USD recently.

I thought it was excessive....apparently compared to Germany the customs officers in Canada use lube. Ouch!
Why excessive? Was that in addition to the GST + PST (or HST)?

I sympathize ! i had the same surprise last month
283 € ( ~ 340 USD) of fees !!! for $600 stuff
56 % tax rate lol

others package were better (taxes between 41 € & 33 € )

in ten years of chipping i think i gave around 11,400 USD to USPS (SFRBox cost $39 & medium box $55) & 10,000 USD in custom fees :vomit:

This was the customs duty they hit me with...... a similar order that was about 1800USD was $170 something in duties a few weeks earlier. No PST/HST is charged on orders bought in the US....Customs adds all the lovely taxes when they get their hands on things. No free trade for regular citizens. I figure for this group buy i'll be looking at $150-200 in customs fee's but who knows.

I feel your pain here in import-duty happy Switzerland. The kicker here is that they include the cost of shipping (yes, really) into the total value calculation, so even if an item is under the threshold for duty fees, the shipping costs can make it so you have to pay. It's beyond ridiculous.

Yep shipping cost is also added to the value of your order when import taxes are calculated. Such BS:mad:

Looks like I will book the cheapest flight to the US once the borders open and get my babies here personaly... Still cheaper considering shipping costs and import fees + I can visit the US

Edit: Of course I will tell the "Zoll" what I bought in the US when traveling back to germany ;):sneaky:

So I did call the customer office to ask if my package can be handled as playig cards... no chance

Of course not... but as poker chips (which is again something they did wrong)? Would it make any difference?

As @Thomacetti suggested, it is best to keep the value below (or at maximum of) 150 EUR. Going over, in Finland we would now have to pay 24% tax and 25% toll if tariffed as ’board games from USA’. That comes to 55% extra fees calculated from item value + shipping cost. :wtf:

That is the only way to keep this money pit affordable....

If you are buying from vendors or members that can't or wont lower value then use a reshipper.
Always pay your purchases in 2 parts (so you can use the lower one as proof for customs)....or use the payment of shipping cost for proof.
They know jack sh*t about value of poker chips and should they ever look into it..I have plenty of link with chips for 5c or 10c ;)

I wonder if the UK has become a European chipping haven since Brexit? I've not seen any additional 25% duty, but then I try and keep the declared cost low 'coz 20% VAT is still more than enough.

There's no Duty for casino/poker chips into the UK, I checked the other day... Always helpful to ask the sender to be imaginative with the declared value due to the VAT.

I sent some chips to France this week and ticked the 'Returned Goods' box.

I think you've got that backwards... HST/PST/GST is definitely factored in for imported goods... it even says so on the CBSA website:

"Most imported goods are also subject to the Federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Provincial Sales Tax (PST) or, in certain provinces and territories, the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST)."

CBSA will also add tariffs/duties if applicable. Based on the info you provided above, I tried out the estimater tool they have and this is what it came back with:

Notice there was no Duty charged but you do have to pay the HST in ON. I estimated the $2000 USD was $2500 CAD for game tokens made in North America. The $290 you paid is pretty close to the estimate above and would depend on the exchange rate at the time.

Try code 9705 00 00 90

9705
Collections and collectors' pieces of zoological, botanical, mineralogical, anatomical, historical, archaeological, palaeontological, ethnographic or numismatic interest

Numismatic could work - poker chips are monetary instruments in a sense

It's true, I've never paid any duty on poker chips coming in from the USA, whether mailed to me in Canada directly or declared at the border upon pickup. It's really only PST and GST (or HST), which for me is 12% in BC. Usually the breaking point is about $200, where it's not even worth their paperwork to collect the measly amount of tax.

that is all a bunch of bullshit.

blood sucking parasites

Yeah, seems they changed that in november. Already had a fruitless discussion about it with them.
No chance, it‘s the government and their only purpose is to take from us.
