If stakes are getting too high for players I think a better model is lowering bounds and keeping buy ins 200bb.

I'd rather play in a deep stack .05/.10 game than a shallow .25/.50.

Short stack poker is rarely as interesting or open as deep stack poker.
I see what you mean. But the way it works now is that it plays almost like games with 150 or 200 BBs because my players don't mind loosing 100BBs, so there are plenty of rebuys in the beginning.

It could of course just be that the players were nits when we first started playing cash but have now evolved, so it might be less about the buy-ins and more about experience.

I have to test with 150 BBs and report back, whenever we're back to playing...

'd say that best (social, home) poker is played when people are comfortable loosing 3 or max 4 100BB buy-ins
I agree, but my .05/.10 people were bringing $20 bills for buy ins, and I wanted one rule to run the room by. 200BB just made sense there

Have faith my friend. Vaccines are rolling out. This will end. In the meantime I recommend you pull out the ultrasonic and start cleaning the entire collection. Best to be ready day 1 than have work to do when the time comes :)

You know your players and game much better, but I think the game would get better at .10/.20, with $20 buy-ins.

I don't see it working. Nickel night here is not about the poker as much as it's about booze consumption with your buddies. Most don't rebuy, and probably would not rebuy if I lowered the max buy in. They play for a while, but it is really about getting drunk with your buddies and having the wife pick you up and drive you home.

I think a hard min-max is the best approach. I experimented with doing big stack match or half-big stack match and it just escalates the stakes too quickly. More power to you if that's a feature in your game, but I think it was a bug in mine. I usually do a 20BB min and either a max of 100BB (0.10-0.10 or 0.10-0.20), 120BB (0.50-0.50) or 150BB (0.50-1 and up)

60bb-200bb is fine, we had people rebuying for the biggest stack that we stopped doing cause the game was getting out of control. So now max rebuy is 200bb.

I like this approach, I think I would rather just have a higher "cap" than try and do any sort of rule based on the biggest stack in the game.

So I changed to 100 BB buy-ins, same blinds. The play opened up considerably! Also, the same players who would quit after 1 buy-in of 200 BBs could easily donk off 3 or 4 buy-ins of 100 BBs! Go figure...

Right, this is what I dislike about 200BB games. I think 120-150BB has been the butter zone for my games.

Most players rebuy in for a 100bb, some when really stuck buy in for 200bb. It depends on your game and the people you play with. What I do notice the most is the later the night and the people buying in for like 60bb, it’s pretty much dead money.

We play a friendly neighborhood.25/.50 usually buy in for $20-$60 question is should there be a “cap” for how much to buy in for, it only come up twice but it’s only an issue late in the game when someone is down a few buy ins, which option do you prefer?

Your question is subjective, especially considering there is no context provided around the two times that the issue has come up.

Just came here to post the same thought.

Buy-in limits are very sensitive to the specifics of your group of players. If you have a bunch of 2/5NL casino regs, then uncapped might be fine. If your group is mostly casual players who are there to drink as much as to play, you might want to cap it at 100-200bb.

Personally, my group has a mix of both - some winning low stakes casino players and some who almost never play cash games outside of my semi-regular .25/.50 games. I've found that for my particular mix of skill and income levels, 40-200bb ($20-$100) is perfect. Some of the casual players will buy in for the minimum a few times and usually get their money's worth in whiskey and entertainment. Others will come with 4-5 full bullets and play serious poker.

But the stakes aren't so high or so low that I lose players. That's exactly where I want them.

Long time, no see. Not hanging out at 2p2HP anymore?

In my local club we started out with a minimum of 50bb and a cap of 500bb
The problem was that the blinds were 1/2 kroner (just about 15c/30c)
And people didn’t bet according to the blinds
So we ended up raising the blinds to 5/5 kroner max one straddle
Min buyin is 500kr and no cap

this now works fine, and player who join the game late, can buyin with at stack to match the table.

i think that we probably should raise the blinds again soon, to 5/10 kroner (90c/1.8$)
Simply to people bet more normal compared to the blinds.
but we also have already had a change from where everyone from the tour joined the cashgame, to now only the more experienced players join the cashgame
And thats better for the game, eventhough it is less friendly

Hey - it has been a while! Welcome to PCF!

A few years ago, I took a break from 2p2 and PCF. I was still playing poker regularly (and hosting home games), but life got busy and the sites just dropped off my radar for a few months. A couple friends here pulled me back into PCF, and I've been a regular fixture since then, but nothing like that happened at 2p2.

I still pop into HP and lurk from time to time, but nowadays it seems like most of the folks I knew best are not there anymore. Some of them are here now, and others I just haven't heard from in some time.

Same here, still running weekly games but not doing much internet. Found this page when I was looking to add on to my chip set last month. 2p2HP is desolate now, looks like only a couple of posts/month.
