What is going on here? W/ sales (4 Viewers)

I’m pretty much of the opinion that phase two for me is “try to smuggle even more chips into the house while pretending that I’ve had them for ages and they’re not new”. Kinda what herself does to me with her clothes and shoes  :ROFLMAO:
The shelves in the hall cupboard are starting to creak so it’s probably only a matter of time before I’m rumbled.
Haha, you just perfectly described my chippin’ life. ”No honey, I got these way back”

Buying something from a member a couple weeks ago and selling for >2x is not adding value, but extracting value from the community. Yes they are legally free and within the terms of the sight to do so. But it also doesn’t make it right. It is also rather un-community like for a place that a lot of people consider a community.
Suppose like buying anything that’s second hand it’s a case of “caveat emptor” just as it is with buying a used car, guitar, golf clubs, etc.
There’s no easy way for forum members to police it other than posting objections and crapping on sales threads which isn’t a good look for the forum either.
If someone is going to buy anything without checking what the going rate is first then they’re asking to have their Spider-Man underpants pulled over their head...

If you can comprehend any of this sh@t show then I’d like to take that course.

op asks why people are selling at high prices
Poster says it’s because everyone’s just like a business and out to make money
I disagreed
RTs comments had nothing to do with the OP, nor did they have anything to do with anyone other than Jim. Easy enough to understand.

Depends on how nosey you are. I like to know what's going on with RHC chip pricing, even though I may never buy another RHC chip again Why? I dunno.
And as long as doing so doesn’t cause you to then spend hours online researching spells to use to turn the seller’s chips into dice chips when the price is higher than you’d like, sounds like a great way to spend some time. Otherwise, maybe not?

Rather than scanning the titles to see if I might want something every time something gets posted, I just unfollowed the Classifieds and the Chip Room altogether last year. Much easier.
Another technique that works for some. The technique I’m against though is not ignoring them in some way and then also being bothered by them!

When I first joined this forum it was only to pick up a nice set of chips and at first I only visited the classifieds section. Now long after i acquired my first set I still spend a lot of time here and I rarely check the classifieds section mainly because I don’t have a lot of disposable income atm to spend on chips (would definitely buy a lot moar if i could:D). But my point is that there are still a lot of interesting things to read and learn about on this forum with plenty of interesting, funny, and intelligent members sharing their honest thoughts and experiences (something rare to find imo).

tldr: this is a great place just make sure not focus on the classifieds if you want to really enjoy this forum.

I swear this is the only hobby on earth where half of the collectors bitch about the fact that their collections have gone up in value.

thats because most of us don’t plan on selling and would buy more if we could afford them. If I were to sell high it doesn’t mean anything if what I buy next is also expensive. It is only good if you sell your collection off like you did.

You mean @RainmanTrail derailed this thread to post some hateful and spiteful comments that had nothing do to with anything but his personal bias. Glad that doesn’t happen anywhere else.

Too funny...
I just played the clip. Bob Dylan sounds just like he did 40 yrs ago. I couldn't understand a word then and I still can't. Good thing you posted the lyrics.... I caught that part
I really like that song. I like the studio version a lot more, but there doesn't seem to be a version of that on youtube.

edit - found it

Maybe so. But that isn't really the point.

Situation#2
New guy #2 comes in here and somehow decides to buy a set of 500 chips for $2500 that just sold for $500. Unfortunately he was taken advantage of. Is this his fault? Sure it is, but at the same time I see no need for this....
Anyway, new guy #2 in 6 months decides he wants something different. He tries to sell his chips and soon finds out that he has to have a fire sale @ $500 to move the chips. New guy #2 decides that he made a big mistake and not only is he not going to buy more poker chips he is going to quit poker too.

I'm not sure this sort of thing can be regulated or controlled, but I guess I'm just saying I am not a fan of situation #2

Not sure that is how these play out, and buyer beware is a real thing. My own experience was COVID related, wanted to hook up some new chips for the game when we got back. We know how those Google searches go, and what we find. You go from thinking about spending .10 to .40 a chip, and ending up HERE to see if you are getting burned, or to learn more about chips, and then realize there are maniacs (In a good way) paying $5+ per chip, ripping off the labels, and then spending another ~.40 a chip to relabel.

So if you don't get offended immediately after getting here, you soon realize the prices are all over the place, and then a person decides how much effort they want to spend in determining / learning the market. If a person can't wait, it's not the Community's fault. For those that do take the time, the very few instances you are referencing in Situation #2 are few and far between. You can't protect everyone, nor should you to be honest, because some poor player through the same sale you are referencing had to buy 2000 chips to get 100 Fracs, paid shipping, and then has to resell amongst the many others that are doing the same.

This Community is great, I don't think it's broken, the timing and availability of chips does suck sometimes.

It's starting to seem like this is top secret intel around here, but for those of you who are wanting a nice set of chips for your home games, but are discouraged by Paulson chip prices exceeding $5 per chip in today's market, you can order a really nice set of CUSTOM CHIPS for less than $3 each from CPC! You get to choose your own colors, edge spots, theme, inlays, and quantities! And they're all in the same mint condition! And nobody else will have your chips. They even have the E&C, lcrown, and scrown molds now, and tri-moon spots, and they even have a nice yellow now too! (the new DG Yellow formula is much more vibrant and brighter than before). I just placed my 6th order with CPC last week for another set of customs, and I'm pretty stoked about it. I only have 2 sets of Paulson chips left in my entire collection now. If you find yourself frustrated by the market prices, and you haven't yet placed an order with CPC, maybe it's time to give them another look. There are some epic sets being made these days. Go snoop around the custom sets section for some inspiration and advice if you think you need it. There are plenty of great resources to help if you don't know where to begin. Having your own set of customs that you designed and love is the Mecca of Chiplandia in my opinion.

WHAT IS THIS "CPC" YOU TALK OF? IS IT A WIZARD?

100% agree with everything you said here.

Only one downside is if you come up with something like Bill's Card Room you do limit your audience if you ever decide to sell. Honestly, that is a small price to pay for all the other positives.

I wouldn't say that this is the case 100% of the time. By all means make a custom set that's near and dear to you. That being said, prepare to take a big hit as you mentioned on a set that is too personal and does not have ave lots of appeal to a broad audience.

A CPC set with broad appeal that was designed and made really well would fetch the cost of the set (and then some). I can think of a few sets that I'd pay actual cost for, but they would never come up for sale, and with good reason.

Always assume your CPC set is gonna be worth half, but some of the better designs around here can pretty coveted and sell for top dollar. Its rare tho...

Has that ever happened? I can't remember seeing a set of customs sell for CPC retail, let alone whatever the additional costs were (like art.)
But this idea of selling CPC customs seems so foreign to me. If and when I order CPC customs, they'll be mine for life. Parting with them would be like a divorce.

Every time I see another thread go up like this, I am like...

All I can tell you is you get what you want out of this forum, period.
If you choose to get in the drama then you will receive drama. If you want to concentrate on buying and selling then thats what you get. If you want to be a seller then be a seller. I see many on here that are "members" and 99% of their adds are sales adds. Is this wrong? I am not one to say it is wrong. This is how they choose to participate in our forum.

Community is a word that is used very loosely to describe all that are in this group. I think of it more like we have many communities within the community. There is a community of Chip collectors, a community of friends, a community of sellers, a community of buyers, a community of flippers and so on. Some people may call them cliques other will call them communities! Chose you community or communities that you like and get involved.

To the newbies, get involved where you think you want to be and get involved. There are a bunch of great people here that can help.

I will add that I have never put anyone on my ignore list. I find it kind of funny that people cannot just read a post and move on if they do not like it. I see them put them open ignore and then un-ignore them to make comments. I also see people saying you are on my ignore list and thence them commenting on posts. If I disagree with someone I choose to ignore what they write but not ignore the person.

So to all the members, what is your community?

Enjoy the hobby and know there are many, many other forums and subsets of collectors that go through the same thing we keep "beating a dead horse" over.

Find you hobby happiness from within!

Keep on Chipping!
