In all seriousness, I don't like to post unless I am contributing something to the conversation and the post count limits on giveaways always seemed a bit unfair. However I do like the supporting member idea. Maybe that could be a +250 points kind of thing?
 
Contests could be like a raffle, but still include post counts...like for each 100 posts, you get 1 chance. Those with many thousands of posts get more entries than those with just a few posts. But, anyone could still win.
It really wouldn’t encourage post padding, but would give an advantage to those long timers with tons of activity.
 
I feel the need to chime in here as I was one who posted ‘welcome’ messages in the offending threads yesterday. I didn’t dig them up mind you...I apparently just added to the problem once others had...

When I see a ‘first post’ thread, I immediately look for my avatar in the bottom-right corner of the thread’s avatar. Not there? I do my best to always open, read the OP, and then reply...hopefully with something useful but at the very least with a message welcoming them to the community. Why? Because when I posted my first message, the sheer number of users who took the few seconds to say hi meant a lot to me.

I never realized I should be looking at a timestamp for a post. ‘Padding’ for a 1in400 or whatever shot at a giveaway never even dawned on me. To each their own.

I will continue to try to say hi to every new member thread. Some of my messages will ‘add value’ in other’s view. Others will only ‘add value’ in my own view by showing a new member the friendliness that was shown to me. If this helps, hurts, or does nothing to my odds of winning a giveaway, I’m fine with each option.

I'm definitely all for the points-based idea instead of the posts-based giveaway restrictions.

But if you have to spend points to enter the giveaway, isn't it essentially a raffle? Were raffles banned because it was more profitable for someone to raffle chips instead of selling, thus leading to essentially selling chips for over the fair market price? Or was there another issue that might also apply to points-based giveaways?

I think the fact that points aren't money is a big difference here.

The most primitive example of post padding is as explained here, members going back through "new member" threads, some as old as October, maybe even older and posting something like "welcome" "hello"
Basically a meaningless, context-less post to boost their counts.
Other examples would be posting in every sale ad "GLWS" and no other text, or "sweet item"

Just be mindful of the the content you are including in your posts, is what they are asking for
