Hey all,

For those of you who use minty RHC chips for your home games, I am wondering how they wear over time.
When you look at casino used chips, many of them still look pretty good with relatively sharp edges, and those have been tossed around and abused in a casino setting.

Anyone have pics of their regularly-used, (formerly) minty RHC sets? I got a cash set from the HSI black friday sale, and there is a part of me that just wants to shelf these to admire from a distance while I use my used mixed set instead.

How long do minty RHC chips stay looking great in regular home game use? (a game a week lets say) Does anyone cringe when putting away their sets to discover new flea bites and other wear?

I am trying to justify letting go of the voice in my head that tells me to keep these pristine forever. Anyone have this problem too?

The biggest issue with RHCs is flea bites that chip out due to the hats being so close to the edge. Encouraging your players not to splash pots or toss chips will help. As far as wear, it will take dozens to hundreds of hours of play to start seeing rounding in Paulsons dependent upon shuffling tendencies. I’m of the opinion that slightly broken in Paulsons feel superior to dead mint anyway.

Chips are meant to be played. Putting enough wear on them to be called 'casino used' means you had hundreds of games and used awesome chips the whole time. A happier turn of events than even the most insane one outer miracle scoop.

Well said!

I guess I have always been a paranoid type of collector. I always buy two of things to collect: one to open and one to put away. Then I end up not opening either of them and I don't even get to enjoy it at all, as they get tucked away into a closet forever.

Maybe I could use this opportunity as an exercise in being less concerned about these sorts of things.

I will tell my crew not to splash pots though haha! And I can encourage shuffling so that over time they become more pleasant to handle, as @kmccormick100 mentions

Personally, I don't like the way minty Paulson's feel. I love the way they look, but I don't buy chips to just look at them. I'm a constant shuffler, it helps with my nervous energy. If I can't shuffle chips I'd rather not even play. So, I'm team @kmccormick100 :) Play with you're chips man, they deserve it.

100% agree on slightly used feel better anyway.

Dozens of hours won't dent or wear them in one bit. It takes a bit of real effort to soften the edges. Hundreds of hours of play with a small set might start to see some softening of the edges.

I wouldn't spend any time worrying about nicks or any of the rest of it. Collectors do like to have mint chips, but other than that I really don't see any reason not to put them into use. That is what they were meant for.

No one really can predict the future & future prices of poker chips, but with that said it isn't like any of the chips Jim sells through his TCR are remotely rare. Honestly, none are really collectible either so it isn't like you would be spoiling something that is likely to be really valuable down the road.

They will get flea bites. But you won't round them out on a weekly or monthly game.

My ASM MD50 set saw about 700 games, enough to get there own homemade hooker juice on them. And they have plenty of character... But edges are still there with some light rounding.

It really puts perspective when you see Bike Tire sets. So many wonderful hours....

Any pics of your set? Haven’t seen many worn CPC chips

Were they mint to being with? Got any pics to share? I'd love to see

These look amazing! It gives me a lot of comfort when it comes time to place my CPC order.

Although I imagine RHCs would get flea bites much quicker than these, I think I forget sometimes just how durable Paulsons are in general.
They will. Alot quicker. But I'd say the general clay wear wouldnt be horridly far off not counting the flea bites.

I sold some fantasy series 98 CDIs a while back.

I personally disagree on paulsons, they do wear down. Not really fast but definitely a softer clay composition than CPCs and BCCs. Just an opinion, but truly bothersome to see fantasy line chips worn down this much! I do admit these could be over 20 years old and used on an obviously regular basis.

CPCs just break in a bit but never seem to loose their shape and stay pretty consistent for a long time. Years of play! BCCS also seem to hold up really well from my experience. But seeing those worn down ES chips above and these CDIs. I truly question if they are truly as durable as people claim them to be.

I was told... oh thise must have been played in a illegal card room to get worn down like that! Seriously?? 98 CDIs in a legit card room?

I know many here have much more felt time on the tables with sets they have owned for years and barely any difference.... but how many hours per year are the chips seeing action?

As far as flea bites go, I'd like to hear from people who have first hand experience with mint RHC's getting flea bites in home games. I'm genuinely curious. We know the mold is more susceptible to flea bites than other molds. But are people just repeating that warning, or are people actually getting fleabites on mint RHC chips?

Absolutely, and the older leaded versions wear down faster than the newer low-lead composition chips. But the leaded versions tend to wear down evenly, with much fewer (if any) flea-bites in a home setting.

CPCs take forever to break-in enough to notice the difference from mint chips. But they are very nice, once they do.

BCCs wear somewhere between CPCs and lead-free RHC chips, leaning more towards the harder CPC end of the spectrum.

are people actually getting fleabites on mint RHC chips?
Not anymore. :D

So I suppose its worth mentioning that I've definitely seen speculation from a credible source that the boat chips aren't casino grade paulsons. Personally, I have a hard time believing that gpi would have a cheaper clay material for non casino grade chips, but who the hell knows?

This is precisely what I'm wondering with this thread. I want to hear about the wear some people experience with putting minty RHCs into regular play, preferably with pics too :)

As far as flea bites on minty RHC's, I received these 2 racks of Harrah's Cherokee T25's from Apache. As you can see, it's totally possible to get flea bites on brand new chips. I am not sure how this happened as they arrived this way. Perhaps it happened in the mail?
