My grandchildren handled the red poker chips from the metal box and we played a counting game together. I had no idea that the chips would run red literally all over my sofa throw until after they went home and I noticed the reddish stains. Of course, I began to fret about the transfer of dye to their hands- possibly their mouths and the toxicity to their young bodies. If anyone knows the composition of these poker chips, please advise me. The metal case is quite heavy with all the chips inside and it is a home use poker set about 20 years old that cost about $50. I hope someone who knows about poker chip composition can help me. Thank you.

Generally these have been made through the years of ABS plastic. No idea what colorants were used for that red, though. It looks to me that the plastic is starting to break down. Not sure if you can do much about it now other than washing very well....and tossing those chips out for sure.

Thank you Colquhoun and Allforcharity for your responses. I will put the fear of lead aside lol. I have thrown the chips away- funny thing when my grandson found the case of chips in my little storage room he thought he found a treasure- what was a simple counting game turned into a nightmare for me-so worried about toxic stuff. Do you have any suggestions for a good replacement set?

I will go to the classified section to check out new sets of chips.

DEFINITELY NOT!

In fact, I've heard that Paulson's are THE most dangerous chips out there.... very unsafe. Thus, I need everyone to send me theirs so I may safely dispose of them for you.

To perform such a service for the chipping community is a great sacrifice on my part, but I'm more than willing to be of help to you all.

You gave me a good chuckle lol

If your little ones will be using them, keep it budget. Little monsters will destroy real clay chips pretty quick. There are some "ok" sets at the discount poker shop. I like to select more unique themes, so the group buys here for Tina's are my goto for budget chips. Good luck and happy hunting.

What do you mean? I'm SERIOUS!

 :ROFLMAO:
Yup you are right about the lead inlay and possible lead dye. I wouldn’t touch them either…. I hope people will send you their old Paulson’s in their collector cases to dispose of. I got a chuckle because I am a “what lies beneath” kind of person who questions the safety of everything. Sentinel personality type. lol
