It took me moving cross country to realize that no human being needs 6 poker chip sets worth as much as a new Kia. Yet... I still want MOAR.
Have any of you successfully "kept the itch at bay" with chipping in the past? Is there a chippers' anonymous that I don't know about? Haha

Sincerely, a concerned chipper.

What works for me is purging. Friends/Family poker buddies mostly but seeing SOME get fancy new homes helps ease it. Then I just buy more. Ya lemme know when u find out.

I basically just trimmed down to sets that I use. I have one small cash set and I am in the market for a tourney set but find it hard to justify since I play maybe 2 or 3 tournies per year.

It also helps to not have any half baked projects since those "need" to be completed. Collecting is cool if it is intentional but it can be a slippery slope where you end up with thousands of chips.

I find that not hosting helps keep me from purchasing pretty much anything. I got into this thinking I would build a really nice collection, but that was predicated on the fact that I thought I'd figure out the logistics of hosting a regular game (or even multiple regular games, if the attendees came from different circles of people).

18+ months later, I simply don't host. And so when something comes up that I like the looks of, I just remind myself, "This is literally going to do nothing but sit on a shelf." That's usually enough to slow my trigger finger.

Exactly this. If you know it will just collect dust then it is a waste... just my 2c. Unless of course you know that is the case and you just want to collect which is also fine.

Death is a nice thought too, to help you refrain from vanity.
It's the only certainty we all have.
Think about to whom you could bequeath your belongings.

Not the only one : taxes is the other certainty...

I think at some point you say to yourself 'I have a set for every conceivable use case' and then move into collecting sample sets?

or you keep coming up with new use cases... a set to loan to people, a set for playing 30x tournament players, and so on.

I just got my first set out the door and on to a new owner and I could only make sense to do that by knowing I was backfilling it with something.

I went from a high tide of 18,000 chips in 9 sets down to two custom sets, a CPC/ASM set and a chipco custom set over a three year purging period. It helped put my kids through college but I miss every chip I sold. Some are considered grail sets as in SDPM cash and tournament sets of 1700 cash and 1200 tourney respectively, a 600 set of Gopherbluesman Grand cardroom chips, high rollers, FLV’s, ESPN tilts, 50mm BCC Grand cardroom, BCC fun Nites- 2200 there, and a couple thousand Aquasinos. Those were the days..... think I’ll go cry somewhere.

I think it also helps to meticulous track what you own so you can kinda see where it all is without going and looking at it.

This has helped me in the past where I have hobbies that including a collecting aspect to them. I use google sheets so I can share them with friends and such.

Ah yes, I can definitely do better here. I like this idea. Thanks!

I don't understand the question

I quit for 10 years, here's how.

have a daughter
get her into travel softball
as a result of travel softball be gone every weekend so you don't get to play or host and spend thousands of dollar a year on softball.
