State of the Current Union/Chip Buying Advice (1 Viewer)

PCF within decent driving distance to me is dead. My economics of life being a factory worker is the economics of life for this chunk of the country. I have watch new people near me join this site, and welcomed them. I then watched PCF chase them away because "you have to buy Paulson chips". Guess what? People here can't afford them. When they get sick of the bombardment of ONLY PAULSON ONLY PAULSON ONLY PAULSON they never come back. For god sakes EVEN THE CASINOS HERE CAN"T AFFORD PAULSON CHIPS THEY USE CHEAP ASS PLASTIC. The "classifieds" people chased them out.
I do agree. People obsess about what is the "best" chip and ignore everything else. Chip snobs. I have my own preferences but I'd never assume that everyone else should feel the same way. Outside of dice chips almost everything you can get is an upgrade from there. As a community we need to stop force feeding people top of the line stuff and try to cater our suggestions more to someone's budget.

To be more specific. I've seen several times someone says their budget is a couple hundred bucks and instead of recommending CCs or ceramics people jump straight to Paulson. "You could put together a 300pc set of Paulson's that are beat to shit for that budget" Not everyone wants to start out with dirty hooker juiced up Paulson's. Some people just want a nice upgraded set that is low maintenance to put right into play.

Tldr - more tailored recommendations for noobs. Noobs also need to be more specific with budget and game size.

PS - I'm still not a fan of BJ chips no matter how much everyone says they're worth it.

I get it. Chipping is an expensive hobby, and a lot of folks on this site have a lot of expendable income. And there are also opportunists who grab sets that are undervalued, then flip them here and/or on eBay for a profit. It happens.

But there are a lot of good chips for reasonable prices here too. Hell, I'm in a GB right now getting a bunch of custom ceramics for about 30¢ per chip! And there are plenty of other used and new options that won't break the bank: China clays, fantasy casino ceramics, Sunfly and Bud Jones plastics, even "well-loved" Paulsons.

There's a lot of love for Paulsons on this site because they're damned good chips, and people here get excited over them. But they're far from the only game in town, and I haven't heard the "ONLY PAULSON" mantra that you seem to be hearing.

Next milling goal might be an entire chanman table..... Thinking Cactus Pete's 1960s glory theme tho....
Idk what that means. Like you can mill a table? Or you talkin bout saving up from milling for a table?

Yo you in love with that Pete right now! But it fits, and it's a great looking piece. Also means one day you're going to have to splurge for a sample set of the real deal, and those MF'ers are EXPENSIVE.

All milling funds go towards, I'm 600 short of the chanman goal....

Get it done! This will help you reach your goal. Pro tip: Tape it to your wall as a constant reminder that you can obsess about. You’re welcome.

These chips "squeeze" easier than a wet sponge and I have been handed chips with loose labels. While I don't like the Bud Jones plastic style, they never would have gotten as big as they got by selling this kind of garbage

@tabletalker7 dude, I'm sorry you have had such a crap experience here but I honestly don't understand what your talking about. I have been here a few years and have been a part of multiple group buys of non paulson chips, I have purchased and sold ceramic chips, hybrid chips, paulsons, plastic slugos, china clays and everything in between. I don't understand how anyone in the classifieds can chase you away. Not to mention you get out what you put in. I value the tremendous input I have received on putting together custom chip sets, cpc, paulson solids, and ceramics. Yes there are some chip snobs here but I wouldn't expect anything less from a poker chip forum. I stay away from the nonsense and drama, I love being part of group buys, I value advise I get here,I love looking at pictures of poker chips and I go about my business. I try to give advise when I can, I post pics when I can, and I sell chips back to the community for what I paid. I see people give great advice to new chippers on a regular basis. People are routinely suggesting custom ceramics from ABC, or other non paulson chips. Hell, we have given Sun fly so much work they are now a vendor here. That's correct a world class manufacturer of casino quality ceramic hybrid poker chips as a vendor here. If we are all so dead set against anything but paulsons how can you explain that? Just ask ABC how much this site likes ceramic chips. Just the other day there was a three page discussion on helping a new member pick out a set of Atlantic club cpc's. It's an internet forum so a thick skin is mandatory. Having said that, I will only use paulsons at my games ... just kidding. Good luck and I hope you have a better time here moving forward, It can be a great place and a lot of fun.

When I say the "classifieds" chase people away, this is what I mean.
1. Someone new, with a budget, joins.
2. Someone tells them their budget is too low, or "you need to take your budget and double it"
3. I tell them of ceramics, give them a link to a thread I made here at PCF on my ceramics, and recommed that with their budget they should think about ceramics. I also give them a link to brpro's sample set page on their website and tell them to look around. A few times I have seen a classified ad for a nice china clay set and I have pointed people on a budget to look at those too.
4. A different person, who happens to have a classified ad selling something, tells them that ceramics are not good and they need to buy their paulsons.
5. I explain that their ad is about DOUBLE the listed budget, and repeat the price point of ceramics.
6. The same "classified" person comes back with how "You should only buy Paulsons they never lose their value. You can buy them, use them, and then sell them for what you paid for them", in spite of the fact that it is still DOUBLE the budget listed.
7. New person never comes back.

I'm with ya! It may just be your personal experience though if noone else has seen or gone through it.

1. People join.
2. I've never seen this.
3. I almost never recommend buying new as they'll drop value. Can find tons of used ceramics, china clays, etc.
4. I've never seen this.
5. -
6. This is literally just helpful information that helps to inform the process. Many people would have skipped earlier stages if they knew it. Not all, but some.
7. We've had quite the mass entrance of new people over the last couple however long now. Many still around, a ton learning, hell some already even trying to do giveaways. Guess if nobody's coming back we're just missing it amongst the masses?

Ya I don't know, I guess I just use this forum differently. I have had probably 100 transactions here and that situation has never come up for me.

Trust me, I don't like thinking of banning classifieds - I am looking forward to the Post Oak Poker Club sale and I got in on the Kings cards group buy - but as long as new people can be fleeced the element will never leave. If someone has a better idea I am all ears.

If you ask the internet for an opinion, you may get a wide range of answers. Sometimes it may be good advise to inform someone that for a few dollars more you can get...

I would agree that would be kinda shitty if someone said that, but I've never seen it.

In this post I advised a new person to
2. Set a budget AND STICK TO IT. Whenever someone says they like a certain chip and ask what the group thinks of it, people always seem to chime in with "If you open up your budget a little more you can get something a whole lot better". Don't do it. Stay within your budget. Chipping is a great hobby, and poker is a lot of fun, but causing yourself financial difficulties will not only hurt your chipping desires in the long run, but can also affect other aspects of your life as well. Chipping is supposed to be fun, not cause pain.
The very next post told them to consider taking their budget and doubling it

Hey, try being a Canadian where your dollar is only worth 70¢ US.

And then factor in more expensive shipping rates to Canada on top of the lousy exchange rate.

And THEN factor in the fact a high number of members post CONUS only sales. Many of them due to sheer ignorance or plain laziness.

There's alot more to PCF than the classified. Just don't venture into that area if it tilts you so much. There's a shit ton of douche baggery going on in there. Just avoid it.

Paulson is considered king around here. But to state that's the only thing available or promoted here is disingenuous.

It would take 1 minute in the group buy section to see plenty of options that have nothing to do with Paulson. And pricing is reasonable. The cards mold ceramic buy is the cheapest option for full customs ever. 30¢ per chip. And on top of it all, plenty of designers providing design work for free! That's the PCF community doing great things for one another!

So to start people off on the site, you warn them about everyone else.

And your example of us forcing people to spend more was actually a PCFer taking the time to write a great introductory piece, which concluded in the following:

"Regarding building a cash and/or tourney set, some additional information like:
Number of players you'd like to accommodate
Buy in/stakes
Chip spending "budget" (whatever you have in mind double it, you'll see why later  :ROFLMAO:) "

That line in the very next post was pretty clearly a joke - though I guess I can see that a new member might not get it, but the user who the post was directed at seemed to understand and laugh about it.

EDIT: And @BarrieJ3 was absolutely right that it contained a ton of great info as well.

This is exactly my point.

You tell me your budget is 15c per chip, you are stuck with dice chips or the like. I tell you for 30c per chip you get full custom chips that are awesome and will also come with the added bonus of resale value. How is that bad or nefarious advice. I just hooked you up with knowledge. If your budget is strict and you just cant do it, well ok it is what it is, but at least you were aware of the situation. Also don't assume that if someone increases their budget it is causing them hardship. They may have set an unrealistic budget in the first place, only they know what they can spend. I say my budget is 100 bucks, may not mean that I can't afford 200 bucks. Maybe I figured $100 was enough, maybe I didn't know what 200 bucks would get me. Knowledge is power.
