State of the Current Union/Chip Buying Advice (3 Viewers)

Ok, I’m one of the new guys here...so consider what you paid for my views before you value them.

As a noob things can be pretty frustrating. Today I just found out that there’s a concept of pre-dibs (as though dibs wasn’t enough!).

That being said, market price is what it is. The thrill of the hunt is what it is too. Put them together, and you have a mighty fine Je........deal!

If I’m understanding you correctly, pre dibs is when someone lists some chips and says “member so and so has first dibs”? That can happen a lot when someone reaches out and expresses interest before the owner is ready to sell. A lot of times the person who had previously reached out will get first crack at buying those chips.

Sometimes you might not want to sell but do because you want to help someone finish an epic/dream/goat/whatever set and will only sell if they get first right of refusal if the second person decides to sell those same chips

One issue is the nut huggers and circle jerkers who say things like 'great price' and 'how are these not sold already' for some of these absurdly priced sets. I'd prefer something more appropriate like 'in your dreams' or a 'go fuck yourself' response.
I agree with this. As a newb it’s hard to discern the real value and the fake shit. I agree with fair market value and the demand driving up price but I hate being taken for a ride.

I do appreciate many of you, whom I feel gave me an honest opinion and pointed me in the right direction. Keep up the good work and this hobby of yours may bleed over to me as well.

The best thing you can do is find a senior member you see that you think you can relate to, reach out. Say hi. Ask about pricing... Advice is the strongest weapon against a bad deal...

I disagree with nothing. I will say, however, that if you find yourself relating to Josh, you might consider praying to whatever little baby Jesus you believe in for help and healing.

Ok - I know I have only been here a year and maybe I don't see thing the same way the rest of PCF does, but this is my story and my input.

I wanted to reestablish my home game. I had gotten a new job, bought a new house, and moved a few years prior. I lost touch with a lot of my old players, so I had to get things going basically from nothing. At the same time my old game was just a bunch of drunks playing in my garage so very VERY little mattered. I wanted to "up my game" when I got my home game going. I wanted something better than poker being the excuse to destroy my liver. A google search brought me to PCF. Signing up was free, so I signed up immediately.
In the beginning PCF was a giant classified ad. After a week, the ads ended and then it became great! I learned about re felting my Barington table, RROP, the value of a hot dog roller (you would think a fat guy who likes food would have thought of that on his own, but alas, I am a dumbass), and the "Vendor" section introduced me to Gene and Kristil from our friends at @BR Pro Poker and I immediately fell in love with semi custom Valentinos. Everything was great, for a while.

Once I got those chips and got them in play with new players, the comments from my new players were overwhelming positive. I have actually had to force some people to cash out at the end of the night because I don't want my chips to become souvenirs at people's houses. As a factory worker who would never be able to afford a Paulson set, they were great! So I thought it would only be appropriate to share my experience with ceramics with new people who have either never mentioned Paulsons or who admit are on a budget. Then the "classifieds" took over. I immediately became ostracized my most PCF members who have been here for more than a year, and all of them angry with me because ALL OF THEM had something for sale that people on a budget could not afford. Apparently telling someone who has a limited budget to get good ceramics because that is what they can afford is somehow against the laws of physics, as apparently people are only supposed to buy Paulson chips because "they can sell them for what they paid for them". When did it become acceptable to purchase something, use the hell out of it, and then expect to flip it with no loss of value?!? Why do people buy poker chips just because flipping them is more important than playing with them? I fell out of love with PCF for a long time (not a long time, but considering how long I have been here, it counts as a long time).

After a while I went online wondering if there was a market for shuffling machines. Still being a factory worker, there is NO WAY IN HELL I could ever a Deckmate. Google pointed me to "Shuffle Tech", but their website was lacking in reviews. In the search for a good chunk of reviews on this machine, Google search results brought me back to PCF :cautious:. After chatting about these machines for a while, I bought one. I may be lucky to have gotten a good one from them, but it is a good one, and people here were nice enough to share their experiences with these machines. I started liking PCF again.

Now I have been here for a year. I thought to celebrate the joy that being here has brought to me and my home games I would do a little giveaway - again it isn't much, but I am still a factory worker and as a result I can't afford to give away gold bars out of Fort Knox.I posted that giveaway at around 4 something in the morning, and with so little action on PCF at that hour people saw it and did what was required to get an entry. I limited total entries to 52, and I got 36 people entered in a hurry. I guess being in the most recent 1000 gets you attention. I honestly thought I would have drawn a winner by now, but the entries stopped. I started to wonder why, and then I saw why. The "Classifieds" took over PCF all over again. So I waited 24 hours to let them flow through and posted in my giveaway thread that I still had 16 entries left. Then the "Classifieds" took over again, but not new "Wanted" or "For Sale" or "Auction" items, but the same crap as yesterday with "bump" added to it. The PCF community buried me again. Honestly, how many people reading this even know I am doing a giveaway?

After a year here, I have learned this about PCF.
PCF was originally designed to be
1. A place to learn about poker chip history and admire that part of gambling.
2. A place to learn about all things poker related, to include home game fun!
PCF actually is
1. An alternative to Craigslist.
2. An advertising platform for people's eBay listings.

People who are here and don't like what PCF has become, I don't know what to tell you anymore. The only way I see to reestablish the happy PCF I fell in love with, and to prevent PCF from becoming this monster again, is to have the website as a whole BAN CLASSIFIED ADS. Craigslist and eBay can sell anyones and everyones chips. We don't need it here.

Yeah, that's a tough spot to be in. On one hand I don't want to walk into somebody else's thread and say, "$5/chip is way too high for these." It's rude.

But on the other hand, I hate it when a bunch of other members jump into that same thread and say, "Great chips, great price! Wish I wasn't broke lolol!!!"

So my policy is that if I'm not interested in buying, I usually just don't comment in that thread.

I don't pull this out lightly....but Kifer just got murked!

I have to respectfully disagree. You can filter the classifieds entirely and still get a ton of value from PCF. And if you're ever fortunate enough to come to a meetup, you'll have a phenomenal weekend of poker and quite possibly make a bunch of new friends.

What in tarnation.....

Bro, you can't use that forever. You are not that cool. Oh wait. You're doing it cause the Pabst. Lol yeah that might just be you in like a year or two more from chipping away and grinding all those leaded chips. Carry on.
Barrie, if you think I cant use the same 15 videos and images every day to troll..

PCF within decent driving distance to me is dead. My economics of life being a factory worker is the economics of life for this chunk of the country. I have watch new people near me join this site, and welcomed them. I then watched PCF chase them away because "you have to buy Paulson chips". Guess what? People here can't afford them. When they get sick of the bombardment of ONLY PAULSON ONLY PAULSON ONLY PAULSON they never come back. For god sakes EVEN THE CASINOS HERE CAN"T AFFORD PAULSON CHIPS THEY USE CHEAP ASS PLASTIC. The "classifieds" people chased them out.

I agree, but this is my only positive contribution I'll die on. The glad handing is just ridiculous, lol you'd think everyone here was a saint, all selling grail sets for pennies. I gave it a go (just trying to talk through the chips) on a recent sales post. The chips are great, but not selling right now. I had more than one new chipper chat with me about buying it, and they were so confused trying to figure out the pricing. Lol the same question, if it's so great, why aren't people snap buying it? So we talked about colors, breakdowns, conditions, market, etc.

Funnily enough, when I reached out to get further information, the answers were positive and honestly should've probably helped the chips sale prospects. I didn't crap on the chips or the sale, but I think it's plenty fair to ask for additional public information on chips to help make the sale a little clearer, even if your not the prospective buyer.

I agree that these are great chips, but I know personally of two newish chippers that have reached out asking questions.

It's been stated before, but it can be hard for new chippers to decipher a good deal when everyone just says, "Awesome chips amazing price". I guided them to ask seller for further guidance.

Kaimat, can you speak to the condition overall? The first picture of faces is clear and looks great, but the splash pot shows stamps where I can't even make out Tournament or Mayfair, in addition to some faded denoms and denoms being various widths (this may just be a chip or two, and it could also just be my piss poor eyesight and bad flash).

Not threadcrapping at all here folks, just trying to help people determine chip condition and answer why it's not a "snap" at $1 a chip (still like the chips, like I've said in above post love hot stamped T molds, own some myself).

If the “cheap ass plastic” chips you’re referring to are bud jones, those often cost more than clay Paulson chips

Not a joke - there’s a Masters of the Universe table top RPG either coming out soon or just released. If you’re into that kind of thing. Anywho...carry on.
So.... In a former life, I might have dabbled in rpgs.... Been years and years....

That could be wickedly fun tho. I'm gonna Orco someone harrrrddddd.

I wonder how much of this is fair and how much of this is just your personal annoyance.
I get that we're all pro-clay here. And personally I draw the line at good ceramics (but you've got those, so you're above my obnoxious line) but there are plenty of people here willing to have conversations about china clays and cheaper plastics. Okay, maybe not cheaper plastics.
But what's your beef with the classifieds? Is it just that when you click 'news posts,' the classifieds dominate the screen? And that the vast majority of those classifieds are for chips out of your range? So you're bombarded by posts that are irrelevent to you? Like somebody else just said, I think that can be fixed with filters.
Or is your beef with the classifieds that there aren't many for cheaper chips? I don't think you're ever going to find a fix for that. People do resell ceramics and china clays here, but yeah, they're the minority.
Or is it something else? If you think we're actively chasing away people, we should know about it. Or at least I'd like to hear more about it.

You need a custom chanman cloth done. No idea what you're talking about (Orco) and not a DBZ follower, but Jeevansluck's turned out great.

I'm gonna nerd it up and get this done on my first table I believe
