Hey there!

Been lurking and reading the past week, the home game poker bug is starting to bite, and have found so much help on here already. You are all so helpful and I know us new aficionados appreciate it.

About me - I live in St. Louis, 30yo, don't have many folks to play with, but I want to change that and start some home games. The dice chips won't cut it, so I'm looking to find something with more oomph. Nothing crazy, I fear I may not get as many uses as I would like, but keeping it to about a $100 budget, the Poker Knight chips seem to be the next tier for me, and I love the colors, especially on the .25 chip (no ugly browns!). In that same boat, the Monacos, Showdowns, even Eclipse are all in my budget and look good to me.

Big shoutout to @Chris Manzoni - your videos showed up in my recommended one day on YouTube and your tourney and cash game breakdowns lit a fire.

Hope to hang around here more and maybe pick up some chips. Hope you all have a great Sunday!

Welcome to the forum! Get samples! Your budget may... grow. ;) Hold onto your wallet and enjoy the ride!

IIRC @Av8tion has Poker Knights for sale?

Welcome to the forum.
There are actually more <$100 opportunities out there than Paulson listings.
It's misleading here because PCF is obviously the Mecca for Paulson chips.
But there are plenty of opportunities to get a set at that price.

I remember Kifer was selling 1,000+ chips for under $0.05 a piece for a while there - Link
If you don't have many people to play bigger tournaments, it's actually to your advantage; less chips, fewer denominations needed.
You could probably put together a small, near-mint Paulson Harrah's Cherokee set that well-exceeds the needs of a small group, close to your budget.
I know the Showdowns photograph well, but try to handle 10 Showdowns next to 10 Harrahs Cherokee..
Then ask yourself if you prefer 1000 Showdowns or 100 Harrahs..

Keep us up to date on your journey - good luck.

Also: Don't underestimate the value of regional casino chips. My first set of Paulsons was a pile of Dover Downs $1s. I still have about 100 of them and I can get my money back any time; consider 'renting.'

Appreciate all the insight. Yeah I'm happy to not have a need to purchase many chips as I don't expect more than 10 and even that is pushing it.

Welcome (from another newcomer) !

In that same boat, the Monacos, Showdowns, even Eclipse are all in my budget and look good to me.

Tastes vary, of course, but just a heads-up: I was pretty interested in Eclipse as well, but when I got some in my hands I was a little disappointed. I liked the black-oriented graphic design, but seeing them in person they felt a little... flat. Just a bit too plain and empty.

If you find an online retailer that carries all the ones you're interested in, consider buying one barrel of each (all at once, to save on shipping) before you spend your budget on a set that you may be underwhelmed by when you actually get them. A picture can't tell you how they feel in your hand or sound on the table! Another option: instead of barrels of one denomination, look on Amazon for sample sets with one chip of each denomination. Prices will vary, so look around to find what works for you.

Good luck on your chipping journey!

Thanks Eddie! Another reason I like the Eclipses is that there's a $50 chip, when other sets go from 25 to 100. I plan to utilize the set as both a cash game and tournament set, so I'm looking at buying .25/1/5/10/50 to represent similarly to a T10000 stack, but instead a T100 stack, using 12/12/5/6 and reserving the 50s for color ups.

I'm on it. @Saoliver - Very kind of you! Best of luck to me!

Ha! I don't think I'm going for Paulsons anytime soon.

That’s what I told my wife. She reminds me about this every time I buy another Set

All in jest. It is great to have you as another PCF chipper!

Welcome to the forum. Love me some Bogarts and Sugar Fire when I’m in the St. Louis area. Should be really easy to up your game here.
I’m certain your tastes will change quickly as you eventually get your hands on samples.
Best wishes to you and I’m certain you’ll put yourself together a great playable set.
Cheers.

Bogarts is good, been a few years since I've had it! Pappy's is the STL staple. If you come back around, make sure to get some STL specialties - STL pizza, toasted ravioli, gooey butter cake. Getting fat is a requirement when you come through.

Welcome to PCF!! Pefect start doing your research. Grab some samples and try out what you have interest in before ordering! If you have any other questions please reach out!!

I’ll do you a solid if these appeal to you. ASM clay chips With edge spots and hot stamps. I’m feeling generous
Hey there! These look okay to me, not a huge fan but not bad. Out of my price range for now as I'm wanting to start small and see if I get traction with friends continuing to play.

Think I'm going for $25 max cash game stakes. Just bought a 400 set of The Mint, something a bit more high quality than dice chips. :D

Not at all trying to dissuade you from Eclipses, btw, but if the design appeals to you and you're trying to find a set with $50s, here are some others to consider that are in about the same price range, depending on where you buy them from - be sure to shop around! The links below are just examples, I don't necessarily endorse any particular retailer:

Pro Poker - https://www.americangamingsupply.com/pro-poker-series-13-5g-clay.aspx - The design here is a little more interesting than Eclipse, but also maybe a little too busy. Doesn't have a .25 chip though.

Roman Times - https://www.discountpokershop.com/25pc-95g-roman-times-true-clay-poker-chips-colors-p-662.html - Also pretty plain like Eclipse. What's nice about these is that they're the same material as the Nexgen Pros, a lighter chip (closer to typical casino weight) with a feel that's still distinctly plastic-y but a little closer to the feel of casino clays than most budget chips. Has both .25 and $50.

Z-Pro - https://www.americangamingsupply.com/z-pro-poker-series-poker-chips-13-5g.aspx - The center of the face is very plain, but the glitter ring and the funky rim design give it some bling. The chip colors are easy to read in stacks but hard to read in a splashed pot (because there's no color in the center, only at the very edges). That's made up for somewhat by the denominations being so easy to read at a distance. No .25 though.

Outlaw - https://www.discountpokershop.com/25pc-13g-law-clay-poker-chips-colors-p-722.html - Very different from typical chips in terms of graphic design; I think they have a lot of character. For a metal-slugged chip they feel really nice, very different from dice chips. Has both .25 and $50.

Hobbyphilic has videos on youtube showing closer looks at the Roman Times and Outlaw chips. Check 'em out!

Happy hunting!

Hey Eddie, no worries. The Eclipses seem to get a bad rap, so I stayed away. I was on the fence about Roman Times, but felt they were too plain. The Pro-Poker and Z-Pro, like you noted, have no 25c chip. I don't like the cartoony look of Outlaw. A bit of a limited desire for myself right now, as I wanted the 25c chip, a $50 chip, and a certain look. Thanks!

I think you made a great choice going with The Mint, then. I'm sure you'll enjoy playing with them! Personally, I think their design is quite attractive, and they feel pretty nice. :)

All good. Glad you found some chips.

When you get sucked into these forums, you quickly feel like everyone has multi$/chip sets. Some do. A ton don't. If you're happy with what you bought, be happy! Enjoy!!! Play Poker!!! Enjoy Some More!!!
