Unwritten Rules of Chipping (1 Viewer)

I totally agree that "dibs" (without any caveats, like "pending split pricing") means "I'm buying this", however, I tend to feel the occasional dibs retraction reflects exuberance vs. maliciousness. For a chipper, I find the former easily forgivable. Assuming it's not chronic.

Even 'exuberance'-based dibs retractions can cause unintended damage to a seller.

Best policy imo would be to just ban all straight dibs sales, period. It's an incredibly unfair format.

There is good and bad about dibs with regard to the sellers and buyers.

I would suggest that sellers benefit more often than not, as excitement and the perception of demand or fair pricing is suggested by dibs and/or multiple dibs/backup dibs.

I would also suggest that buyers benefit, as dibs form a virtual line of potential buyers which is honored for each to negotiate a purchase calmly. Otherwise, sellers would be free to sandbag PMs and wait for higher offers. Or give preferential treatment to particular people or PCF members.

In my short time on PCF, it seems reasonably fair and absolutely amusing, for what that's worth. Again, we are talking about the sale of poker chips.

I agree with this to an extent. I adopted your method (express interest, then a random number generator or flip for who gets to buy the item) for items that I know will be in high demand.

If it's a little trinket or not so popular or obscure item that I don't think will have a lot of interest, or if I have multiples of the same item, I'll just say have at it.

Might as well throw in quick thoughts on some of the contentious subjects:

Re. Reneging: A deal is a deal is a deal!!! However, it is up to the non-reneging party how to deal with it. I've had some people reneging some purchases recently and I decided, given particular situations, to just let it go. If someone decides to be tougher on a buyer or seller reneging, I can totally understand. Bottom line for me, once the words "it's a deal" is exchanged, both parties are on the hook for it, unless they both agree to disregard it.

Re. FOB Shipping: The person posting a WTS ad (any ad for that matter) has the prerogative to set the terms for his/her sales. You don't like it? Don't buy it. I honestly cannot understand people trying to force terms on a transaction that is not his/hers.

Re. Public Bashing: Although I agree with Brie that everything should first be handled behind closed doors to the best of both parties abilities, imo, it is in the interest of the community, if things are not resolved, that the facts are shared publicly to protect future transactions. Yes, feedback helps but sometimes, that is not enough. Maybe Public Clarification is a better term since it shouldn't be about bashing per se, but about laying out the problematic situation.

Re. Dibs: It originated when someone knew of somebody else looking for a particular chip. Now it's been used for more than that it seems. Regardless, my personal stance on dibs is that it does not mean anything other than a potential interest. If someone posts "I'll take them" after dibs is called, that person gets the chips.

Re. Angle Shooting Transactions: I've been part of this community for almost as long as it exists. Both here and at the blue wall. I have never been party of any angle shooting transactions. Dealt with friends, foes, noobs, dinos without ever having a glitch. Not sure where the comment about angle shooting comes from, personally. Yes, there were maybe a handful of people, in more than 10 years, who were "problematic". Given the number of transactions and the value of such transactions throughout all those years, I'd say it is close to impossible to get a better track record.

I'd like to propose another unwritten rule (or plea?) - sales ads, I find it discomforting and disturbing when sellers remove photos, prices, or sometimes any mention of items that have been sold (both in the title and body of the ad). Sure, mark it as sold, put the text in strikethrough, but please do not remove information. As a potential buyer, it deletes history showing current market value. As a real buyer, it makes it very hard for me to find again the ad and photos that were presented in it if wasn't quick & smart enough to store them... and price too (yes, it has happened that by the time the seller and me finalized the buy because other items turned out to be of interest, I couldn't remember the exact price of the "main" item).
I did this recently on a multiple set sales add thinking it would clean things up in the add, turned out I couldn't recall all the extras I included in a particular set. That issue along with what you are saying I will not be doing that again.

I had brought this up, and just to clarify I didn't mean it with any vitriol. It's taken me awhile to get to where I am now, because those angle instances used to make me angry. We're a community, and an awesome one at that, so these instances really stuck to my ribs. I just think it's important to note for new members that yes, while we're all here to help, and support, and share with you, you should also be aware that for what seems years people just leave positive feedback and other than random posts, you won't really find any evidence of shenanigans.

There is absolutely nothing that is wrong in these scenarios, but it's not something I would do. I've had a seller reach out to sell a set who had full knowledge that a vendor here was just about to release a crap ton of them for super cheap. That one sucked. I've had someone release extremely limited samples first, knowing that as soon as those were picked up for an extravagant price they'd immediately be listing the whole set. I've lost to a person on a PCF auction, who at auction closing offered them to me at an increased price (what?). Let's not even remotely go over the time when I joined the site, how literally everyone and their mother were selling, but noone was buying (I picked up a ton of auctions for so dirt cheap). Not a lot of people we're signing up then, and when I came in and said hey guys I have some money and need a set, some of the offers I was receiving were downright dirty, literally trying to screw over a new member (and they weren't exactly few and far in between).

All the other stuff I'm fine with. There's going to be miscommunications. There's going to be chips lost in the mail. I myself am guilty of being an idiot and having chips going out being delayed. In a year I've probably had at least 150ish purchases and sales, they go off well, and I trust folks here. But yeah, it took me a minute to get here, totally happy with the 99.9%, and let the .1% go. I just think when someone joins and has kumbaya smoke blown everywhere, it can take them a minute to recognize some people heavily separate the classifieds and their actions in it from the support and sense of community.

To me, the posting of "dibs" means "I'm buying this now". ...

If you raise your hand at an auction or BIN a sale, there are no backsies....

I agree with this, and here's the thing: If there's a segment of folks who believe a person posting "dibs" on a classified ad indicates he/she is buying it, how many no longer go back to the ad because they already think it's off the market? Me personally, I tend to no longer return to a sale thread after seeing "dibs" in there.

Yes, I know I can always go back to the sales thread if I notice it's still open, but funds by then might have already been diverted to Plan B, C, D, etc.

Fair question, what's the point of feedback? It's literally just there for when either there's a miscommunication or a falling out, and then automatically both parties just leave eachother negative feedback, without it mattering who is right and who is wrong. What are we starting to see, but more and more people with 30-100 positive feedback and 1 negative.

Instead, we should have another opt in forum like the Politics one. PokerChipForum Court. Both parties enter, state their cases respectfully with charges and rebuttals, and we the people vote on whether one, neither, or both get negative feedback. With names crossed out so that we don't play favorites.

I just wanted to say PCF court is an awesome idea.

I mean, whoever wins the entire PCF wide tournament and gets to be PCF King for a year should totally implement it.

The goal should be to make it as legit as possible though, so we get to keep it after that person loses the PCF King (or Queen) title.

(My great vision for PCF is obviously a mix of a fiefdom, Idiocracy, and Lord of the Flies.)

Pretty much what I’m aiming for right here.

It’s not like we don’t already have rules in place!
Rent out a large room in Vegas. All PCFers are invited, we will run all purchases through my wife. Points program and Coronavirus, we can keep flights and rooms under $300 total. Possible Private Party Plane?

PCF wide tourney, winner is King/Queen of PCF for one year. Can administrate threads and posts as desired, and is given ban hammer ability. Any bans and other actions reset at beginning of PCF wide tourney 2021 when new PCF King or Queen is crowned.

All that’s left is to chat with Tommy, add an amendment to the TOS and users agreement, and schedule the PCF wide tourney.

Shit. I just realized that if one of like one of three people win, I’m pretty effed. I’m gonna have to put some awesome bounties out on some folks.

Man, I missed the arrival of our new dude Windwalker and his search for some new chips (and of course eventually chairs, table, etc. etc.).

There's always gonna be a comment or two razzing someone, and I get that, but I'm kinda sad to see some of the nonsensical comments thrown his way. Literally if it was any other person, or if he just didn't mention his stakes, nobody would've batted an eye. But because he plays at a level (or at least blind level) that most of us wouldn't dream of, he gets some shit.

No rule broken, unwritten or otherwise, but it's just kinda yuck.

I suppose its a weird thing to comment on a thread where you're being discussed, but I'm not shy, as recently evidenced.

I have to say, these hours I've spent in the past few weeks on my new fascination with chipping have been really interesting. As I said in a PM to someone who reached out after reading this thread, I think there’s a sense of territoriality that occurs when new members join groups and are not necessarily the quietest or the most shy. This shouldn't be foreign to anyone, from being the new kid in school to being the new person at work. I’m thick-skinned enough to know that it’s not personal —I mean, honestly, how could it be? — and by the way, we have never been at a more on-edge or hair-trigger time as a culture than in recent months.

To balance out some of the aggression, some members of this community have been incredibly generous with their time, patience, wisdom and help: in particular, @Steppenwolf, @BGinGA, @navels, @horseshoez and @Ben8257 come to mind.

I'm going to continue to keep my eyes open for large sets of beautiful grail chips, and now that I know people like @Gear are expert re-labelers, am working on figuring out if there's a way to customize some of my purchases. Super excited to learn more about this new hobby and continue to be a part of the community.

You've come in swinging. Great work!

As long as he doesn't start hunting out custom sample sets for display. There's enough numbskulls here I have to compete with *ahem*.

Also, I wonder what new chippers like @windwalker are thinking when you reach out to them, they take a look at your avatar, and it's a half nude picture of some dude (presumably you) filling up a walmart kiddie pool.

Glad you’ve joined and have taken a head first dive into enjoying these precious round clay works of art. Territoriality or not, your choices of which chips you like and choose to acquire is your business and yours alone. Never mind what some schmuck says or random comment he/she throws in. I’ve quickly learned that even when trying to proceed with caution with regards to everyone in the community, there’s bound to be some mutts here and there that’ll bark for no reason.

Members like myself are here for a few reasons aside from collecting our own chips. 1) I’ve got smart ass for you all day long for entertainment purposes. 2) I’ll be glad to help someone get closer to obtaining chipping nirvana. Have to remind ourselves we’re pretty lucky to be obtaining these things, let’s enjoy the ride and let others do the same. Even though you’ve only recently joined, even with the sets you’ve acquired, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. You’ll begin customizing these bad boys to your liking and that’s when I think things get really interesting ;)

I'm a trooper bro! I'm not afraid of having another man half naked on a poker chip as my avitar! Team BanNANA and Buttysinglet for life!! Everyone else gave up.. still hoping to add a quality file of my own for the next denom one day... but it's going to have to be epic!!

Here’s an issue that bothers me - you can’t post negative comments on classified’s asking prices, but you can post positive ones.

Say a guy posts his chips for sale at a price that’s above market value. Maybe not obnoxiously so but clearly similar chips are routinely sold for less. You’ll see this often with casino used RHC sets, that maybe sold for a certain price 3-4 years ago, but in today’s market their value has dropped.
We’re not allowed to comment on it negatively, and I get that. The problem is that you’ll see other people, maybe the seller’s friends or maybe lovers of that particular chip, comment positively - fluffing the set, saying “great chips great price” or what a great value it is.
So now mr uninformed buyer comes along, sees everybody saying what a great deal it is, and buys with confidence. You can caveat emptor all you want, but I think it’s crap.

Oh, please. When it comes to a grump-off, you're not even in the big leagues. I could out-grump you with my lips tied behind my back.
