Look, I already said I'm new and I only speak for myself based on the observations that I have made. If those in charge wanted to eliminate dibs, then they would do so. They haven't, so we're stuck with it. If someone wants to codify exactly what it means and put it in the forum bylaws, then by all means do so. Until they do, each person has to decide for themselves what it means. I've explained what it means to me. Others have described it differently. Absent an official definition, this is where we stand, with some of us disagreeing with others of us.

Errr, yeah, I'm with you. Didn't disagree with a single portion. Was just trying to add something in there that might help a fellow person that seems to diving in somewhat akin to what I did and mentioning an additional unspoken rule.

I completely agree. The intent of what you proposed is very noble. As a community we help each other out. We're not collectors and traders with a primary intent to make a profit. But see my response to BarrieJ3. if we want to eliminate the dibs system, then do it. Until then, we all are going to have different opinions as to what it means.

I feel that sometimes people use "dibs" to block others from purchasing some chips, when they are uncertain if they want to purchase them or not. Much like a time bank when they are tanking. Don't see it often, but I do think it happens sometimes.

Dibs system isn't perfect, but it generally works pretty good. Keeps prices mostly fair. If you check the classifieds once a day, you can usually get what you are looking for. The really hot stuff flies quick, but often those aren't sold with dibs.

I also got burned once by not stating backup, but it's pretty easy to get over as there are lots of wonderful chips that the members on here sell at fair prices. There will always be something small that will irritate a person for a bit, but all in all this is a great place to buy and sell chips.

And yes, I do understand that everyone looks out for themselves first, if that's what you mean by angling. "Dibs" with no follow-up means nothing to me. "Dibs" on behalf of other people mean even less. It is not a statement of intent, does not imply a contractual obligation, and is not binding on the seller. Better to post "PM coming" to show your interest and hash out the details in private.

All this talk of agreeing to buy an item and not following through and paying for the item makes me think of my only one bad experience on here. It was early on here when I did my first Group Buy. I made the mistake of doing a group buy for a set of custom Dealer Buttons from Sal from OWPS and getting everyone to confirm their interest for the buttons and not collecting up front. I recontacted everyone again to make sure they were in on the group buy and everyone said yes. So I placed the order for the Group Buy. When I got all the buttons in I contacted everyone and let them know how much and to get their shipping. Like 14 or so people all contact me back telling me that they payed and sent me their address. Only one person didn't reply to my PM. I sent him another PM two days later and no response. I check and he is on here every day. He was someone who was a regular before and he was pretty active and I thought he was a respected member so me being newer I don't want to cause an issue. I contacted him with 4 or so more messages telling him to let me know either way if he wanted them or not. No response whatsoever. It was radio silence. So I just let it go. It gave me another extra set of DB's or I figured I could just post them in the classified at a later date. I didn't call the member out and could not leave him Negative Feedback because the GB was not a sale thread. Back in the day this site also had Raffles at one point. What I did notice with that member is he would say he was in for a particular raffle spot and then when it came time for payment of the raffle the member would just disappear and I would contact then Raffler to let them know the guys deal and they would get someone else to take the spot. I did that on a few occasions.

I thought the raffles were useless anyway as didn't @Oggy win most of them?

I strongly believe this is something that moderators can set up a resource for, the person getting "shafted" can file a complaint, if the mods see it as an offense it can be posted into a log we can access publicly. No thread bashing needed. You can even put a ranking system so if theres multiple offenses it will show

PCF has made it pretty clear than transactions in the Classifieds between members are outside the scope of site control or responsibility (beyond member adherence to listing/posting guidelines). Admins and volunteer Mods have better things to do with their time than to babysit disputes.

Compliance with 'unwritten rules' has historically been self-policed, and has always worked pretty well. Public discussion of offenders is a critical component of that process, as it adds some teeth to the 'consequences' aspect.

First and foremost, this is a discussion forum, about all aspects of poker chips (and more) -- and I find it personally distasteful for others to attempt to dictate and/or limit that discussion if held in an open and honest fashion. If it gets heated, so be it -- often the true colors of a poster will be revealed, and that only helps the community in their decision-making. All actions have consequences.

Man, I missed the arrival of our new dude Windwalker and his search for some new chips (and of course eventually chairs, table, etc. etc.).

There's always gonna be a comment or two razzing someone, and I get that, but I'm kinda sad to see some of the nonsensical comments thrown his way. Literally if it was any other person, or if he just didn't mention his stakes, nobody would've batted an eye. But because he plays at a level (or at least blind level) that most of us wouldn't dream of, he gets some shit.

No rule broken, unwritten or otherwise, but it's just kinda yuck. One of my favorite reads was the AMA that @Bmeister51 ran with us awhile back. Was a real fun look into what someone else's action looks like, something that I won't experience even if/when I could afford it, and I'm glad that people weren't dickish towards him and he stuck around for things like that AMA.

Sure, mark it as sold, put the text in strikethrough, but please do not remove information. As a potential buyer, it deletes history showing current market value. As a real buyer, it makes it very hard for me to find again the ad and photos that were presented in it if wasn't quick & smart enough to store them... and price too (yes, it has happened that by the time the seller and me finalized the buy because other items turned out to be of interest, I couldn't remember the exact price of the "main" item).

Accurate and complete historical data is helpful when identifying the outlier prices that a very few -- in some cases, just one -- are willing to pay.

Those outlier sales typically do not define the market value for chips, but only if other historical data is present and searchable to indicate actual value to the vast majority of chip buyers.

Many times though, the sale price posted, and ACTUAL sale price aren’t the same. Deals are made via PM all of the time. If I list a rack for $300, but sell it for $200 in a PM, I’m marking it sold. I am not going back into my ad and updating the price to actual sales price. Nobody does

I don't know, I always thought it was kind of rude to ask what stakes someone plays unless you are directly asking them to help about chip breakdown for a set they want to buy to accommodate their game.

I've plopped down thousands here in the past year for the most part for my 0.10/0.20 game with my friends. It's going to take a lifetime of run good to get that money back. It's all for the love of the game (and chips) that I'm here for.

Not on eBay, not on Craigslist, not at home for that last chocolate chip cookie, and not in other forums. Everywhere else, money talks and b.s. walks. Other than the occasional, enthusiastic overuse of dibs, it's usually as good as gold (a.k.a sold!)

For example, in response to someone posting pr0n of the grail set that they finally assembled after years of hunting and saving purchase funds along with writing "I'll never sell this set". I’m in BMX bike forums and Dibs is used there. However, Dibs means you are going to buy it unlike here. Once you call dibs you agreed to buy the item. Here some people call dibs and then a few minutes later say they made a mistake and then say they are releasing dibs. I never try to call dibs, but respond with “I’ll take the .....” There is no gray area here as I 100% committed to buying the item.

There are two instances in which I called "dibs" and I retracted that I can remember, and both were several months ago. Once because I didn't know the price was going to be so high, and the other because I decided to go in another direction with a set I was building at the time. I feel awful and crappy about it still.

Today, if I call "dibs" I'll keep my word and buy the item, even if it means I later catch and release at or below the price I paid. Granted my buying is going to slow down significantly until the end of the year, but at this point I have a good idea of my wants and needs, so I won't have to worry much about this

To me, the posting of "dibs" means "I'm buying this now". If a person were to subsequently back out of the posted agreement and terms of sale, I'd leave negative feedback 100% of the time. I have yet to leave negative feedback to anyone on PCF.
