Unwritten Rules of Chipping (5 Viewers)

Oh, please. When it comes to a grump-off, you're not even in the big leagues. I could out-grump you with my lips tied behind my back.
Kifer is the kid on the episode who says something off hand and the whole class and teacher say, "Jossshhhhhhh", while he smiles into the camera. He's Opie or Dennis the Menace. Not the Zodiac Killer.

Swear on everything when I read his post I thought how funny it was that he thought he had a shot of being that guy against you. If @pltrgyst wasn’t made for that role I don’t know who would be. Kids these days.;) :ROFLMAO:

I just wanna be Judge Judy and start screaming at Barrie for chewing gum on court day.

Lol you’ve got my vote dude. You just can’t out grump .5 of the grumpy duo who has been grumping members since the time of forums on stone tablets. @pltrgyst and @BGinGA , proudly ruffling feathers with (correct) criticisms and reality checks of all things chips and tournament structures. ;)

Seriously though, I’ve watched so many people think those two are picking on them or being too abrupt, only to realize over the course of the next ten posts or so that they are right. Two absolute pillars of this community.

I got too much respekt for that lady to be chewing in her court. Whens the Halloween meetup? You can be Judy, I'll be Judge Joe Brown. Oooooo who's gonna represent The People's Court and be Judge Marilyn Milian?

Robes and gavels all around, bitches.

She is so insanely hot to me. Anyway, carry on.
I mean Judge Judy isn't my kind of lady, but different strokes for different folks.

I actually went to grab pictures because I thought maybe Martino could play Harvey Levin (the guy who took public opinion outside) when I saw this:

Hmmm, I remember her a little different. But still- Rachael ray, Marilyn, that one girl from those cell phone commercials from a while ago, and Jennifer Aniston all live comfortably in my mind to this day and we are one big happy family.
I don't disagree. I'm not trying to objectify women or anything, but it's hilarious that I know spot on what you mean when you say "the one girl from those cell phone commercials". I think she actually picked up quite a bit of fame for playing "Lily Adams" in those.

I remember games from my childhood that were amazing and graphics/gameplay were out of this world, then I go back and I'm like oh this was crap.
I remember childhood crushes or people I thought I we're extremely attractive as a kid, then I go back and I'm like oh I've always had great taste.

Well, guess they'll be written now....

Could also include some good chipping etiquette, karma points, etc.

I'll start it off with a few:
  1. Never monetize something you got for free from another chipper. Someone thought highly enough of you to extend goodwill your way - pay it forward. Charity fundraising should be the only exception to this.
  2. If you are planning to sell someone else's customs, always offer them back to the original owner first out of courtesy. If you got them for free, see rule #1
  3. Avoid the "I waive all responsibility once it hits the Post Office" language in your sales, especially in international sales. We are selling in a free marketplace thanks to Tommy and even have a reputation system. There will naturally be some risk associated with this, so pack your shipments well and try to make it right if something goes wrong
  4. Show respect (and patience) to the seasoned chippers who provide guidance/wisdom to us all. This extends to mods as well. These folks go out of their way and spend countless time supporting this community. Time is the only thing we can't buy more of, and they donate theirs freely.
I had a few more, but figured I'd let others mention. Share your thoughts. Thanks!

Honest question: what makes collecting poker chips any different than collecting watches, cars, humidors, or any other memorabilia? Every person should be free to live as they want without a code passed down. I have no interest in whatever dogma exists in chipping culture.

I also think number 4 is a joke. Why would I show any extra respect to someone who collected poker chips longer than me? Some of the seasoned chippers are helpful and cool. Some of the seasoned chippers are arrogant assholes. Every person gets the amount of respect they deserve.

What if they are helpful assholes?

Honest Answer: I don't think collecting any specificity is different from a macro level. Now if you ask me personally, whats different in collecting poker chips than your collecting of x, y, z Barrie?

I would answer, well I belong to a community and work hand in hand with hundreds or thousands of folks in collecting poker chips, to the point that I've spent time at their homes, met their families, have left thousands and thousands of dollars worth of goods in their possession, and actively buy and sell based fully on trust. It is a social construct, and one that can and does provide actual support to many people, both day to day as well as in times of need. In my other hobbies, there may be a community, but it is not to this degree of trust or involvement amongst this many people.

There is no code we have to follow other than a couple of blatant rules to protect ourselves. Beyond that, there is a couple of things we can all flap our lips about and get bogged down in (dibs), but for the most part all these "unwritten" rules and such are basically, "Don't be an asshole". Now if someone is insulted by that, or thinks of that as dogma in the community, so be it. They can still do things that are completely selfish, they can still post while having 0 self awareness, yadda yadda yada, but they're obviously not hindered or relegated to some dark corner of the forum.

Number 4 literally reads "Show respect (and patience) to the seasoned chippers who provide guidance/wisdom to us all. This extends to mods as well." BGinGA answers the same questions, again and again. And again and again and again. In 5 years, Brie will have officially welcomed 5,395 chippers to the site, and Ben will have sent each of them a welcome essay. David has defused however many issues and asked us to Chip On relentlessly. AllForCharity has reached out to who knows how many chippers looking to get their hands on their first nice set, working with them to try and build a really cost effective set out of his stuff.

Not sure why you would personally take that as I show someone extra respect because they've done this longer, but I suppose anything is open for interpretation.

This sums up very well why I join forums. And I have joined A LOT of forums over the past 20+ years. The best of them operate just like this. I've met some of the nicest, most genuine, most generous and most caring people that I have ever known through forums. The members become family. They meet up personally, stay in each others homes, cry on each other's shoulders, and financially assist those who experience hardship. I'm new enough here and to this hobby that I'm not quite ready to say this one is the very best, but it is certainly in the running. I've made life long friends that I still talk to and sometimes travel to visit, even if both of us have moved on from whatever interest caused us to join the forum where we met.

To those who would say this is bunk, I'll say that you get out of something what you put into it.

GUILTY BY THE SKIN OF MY TEETH! MY COUNCIL WILL BE @Hornet AND IF ANYONE MAKES A MOVE ON ME, I'M MILLING THE WESTWORLDS....
You uh, you think a real lawyer is gonna help in PCF Court? Unless he can juggle and sing his ABCs backwards, I doubt he can even get accredited as a PCF Pettifogger (the only representative you can use for PCFC during this lunar cycle).

I'll go ahead and send you the PDF, you should know your rights.

My client pleads nolo contendere and asks for mercy from all who have drunk-posted on PCF. The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven.

Here’s an issue that bothers me - you can’t post negative comments on classified’s asking prices, but you can post positive ones.

Say a guy posts his chips for sale at a price that’s above market value. Maybe not obnoxiously so but clearly similar chips are routinely sold for less. You’ll see this often with casino used RHC sets, that maybe sold for a certain price 3-4 years ago, but in today’s market their value has dropped.
We’re not allowed to comment on it negatively, and I get that. The problem is that you’ll see other people, maybe the seller’s friends or maybe lovers of that particular chip, comment positively - fluffing the set, saying “great chips great price” or what a great value it is.
So now mr uninformed buyer comes along, sees everybody saying what a great deal it is, and buys with confidence. You can caveat emptor all you want, but I think it’s crap.

Is that really just market value? It's up to the buyer to research and confirm what price he/she pays.

Oh yeah. This smarmy, wig wearing member of the oligarchy is definitely not gonna help you in PCF Court. Take your Macbethian verbiage back to the bourgeoisie from whence ye came you bougie book reader!

I demand Kifer be found guilty, simply by invoking this sad excuse for a Pettifogger! Barrabus! Barrabus! Barrabus!
