This is one thing that I've been questioning for quite some time now, and the pet peeve thread made me realize that this might be a good topic of conversation.

What do you all think is the proper time etiquette that one is to remain seated before getting up from the game (assuming you are winning)? I know that most of us have home game rules such as a single orbit, 30 minute notice, etc., but what are your considerations in other situations. My thoughts are listed below, but I'm curious to know what everyone else thinks. For simplicity's sake we can go with these as general definitions:

Online - Pokerstars, Mavens, etc. (Games available on PC)
Mobile App - Pokerrrr2, Pokerbros, etc (only available via Mobile device; cash games not play money)
Casino - Self Explanatory
Home Game - Also self explanatory

My thoughts are as follows:
Online games - Depends on the crowd, I would typically treat these as home games, but I also don't play as long. I would typically give at least an orbit's notice or a time that I'm done, but if I'm seeing players just randomly get up or leave without notice, I'll probably just up and leave at some point (this is not something I'm comfortable with, but there are instances where I've done this)
Mobile App - This is probably the hardest one because my attention span with my ipad is minimal. I'll probably never play for longer than an hour or 2, and I'll typically give an orbit's notice before I go. I've also hopped in and out of running games after playing for only about 10 minutes, but when I did it, I announced it before I played a hand. After doing that once, it was really uncomfortable for me (especially if you win) so I'll only play when I have at least 30mins of time available.
Casino - Always announce last orbit, but I'm almost done doing that as well (I had a circumstance once where we were short-handed and I said I'd play to my button, and the table broke right after I was UTG).
Home Game - I'll always follow home game rules, when I'm hosting; give me 30 minutes or at least an orbit's notice. Either will suffice. If I'm playing at someone else's game, I'll usually ask what's their general rule.

What do y'all think? If you have any stories about people hitting and running, please share.

Online - if playing with people I know in real life, I treat it as a live home game (see below). Otherwise, I'll leave when I want with no notice or conversation
Mobile app - same as above
Casino - I'll leave when I want with no notice or conversation
Home Game - if planning to leave before the normal end time, I announce when I sit down what time I'm playing until. If the game is still going when I get tired or otherwise need to leave (unplanned), I try to give at least 30-45 minutes notice, then announce one more orbit when that time is done.

Exactly this.

Seems like the only games with regulations tend to be home games.

Agree with this

To be clear, I will never hit and run even when I'm playing against a bunch of strangers, but I don't feel an obligation to let them know when I'm leaving, especially online where any number of things could distract me from playing.

Fack that. Playing online against strangers who would slit your throat remotely, just to see your time run out to steal your small blind?
Hit and facking run without regard or regret.

Not so much regulations as norms. If you are playing with a group of complete strangers that you will never see again (casino) or even meet in person (online/app), then the nature of the game is mostly about the money and the game. And the nature of the environment is that strangers get together and then disperse at seemingly random intervals. If someone's nose gets out of joint because you leave with a stack, well that's on them, not on you. You will always be able to get a seat at the table, unless your behavior violates the site/casino rules.

Home games on the other hand tend to be more about the social relationships (as well as the money and the game). Keeping the group dynamics stable is an important goal (as is getting invited back). Acting like the money is more important than the group tends to annoy some, which might reduce your chances of playing there again.

totally agree

I try to go by the Golden Rule in assessing these kind of situations ... I usually just provide a heads up about 45mins-1hr before stepping out. Have thought about a rule of having a hit and run player having to buy-in for the amount that they cashed out with to be invited back. Then again, I like to be drama free so it’s more likely that a person just won’t get an invite again for repeated acts (as opposed to a one time issue)

Home game (online or in person) - stay till end, announce about 20-30 minutes before leaving.

Casino & online vs strangers - leave anytime you want.

As a almost daily player on WC I am usually one of the last player left often playing 3-4 handed way later than I should be. I usually give an orbit notice if the table is mostly full. If we are very short handed a 10 minute notice is more than enough. And if there is a wait list just say bye when you leave!

A live in person game is different. Plan on staying at least 4-5 hours and if there is a set end time plan on staying until then and if you can’t you should let everyone know that early on.

Not much will piss everyone else off faster than 10 minutes after someone wins the biggest pot of the night they say how tired they are and take off.

So what’s the general consensus on definition of hit and run. To be clear I’ve never really played in a home cash game, but even if I’m playing live and I know I’m towards the end of a session- and I happen to hit a monster pot, I’d generally play one or two more or orbits. I have never feel the need to let the table know my intentions of my time frame- if I was in a home game, I get the point of announcing say 30 minute warning.

The few times on Windy Crest when I announced leaving when BB hits me - or one more round, I get zero acknowledgement. So I stopped giving any notice

Not sure I can define it. To me it’s kind of like that statement on obscenity - you know it when you see it haha:D

See, I struggle with this as well. If I'm playing and announce I'm done, if I win a big hand on the way out, I'm still uncomfortable leaving. Whether it be home or online. I tend to want to play one or two more orbits just to be fair.

Ive never in my life just picked up after a huge pot for the stakes I was playing- but I have on many occasions hit monsters towards the end of my sessions. I have to drive pretty far to play live, so my poker trips are minimum 4+ hours long

most people don’t acknowledge it, but it is still courteous to do I guess. Often times after someone leaves someone will say “what happened to so and so?” And we then say he said he was leaving in 10 minutes an hour ago:ROFL: :ROFLMAO:

I pretty much do the same- but if I’m ready to go and win a nice pot, I’m not staying past 2 or orbits. Also not letting the table know that’s my plan either though * in live games *

Yea, those are particularly tricky. I’d feel uncomfortable snagging a big pot and leaving even if I had announced it an hour earlier. I can’t imagine folding a great hand/play just to avoid the situation either. It’s tough. But I think announcing ahead of time is key.

This!

The worst I ever saw was the player literally cashing out the second he scooped a huge pot. Another time a different player folded a few hands while he sorted the winnings of the previous hand, and then pulled the plug. Both times relatively early in the evening. Definite H&R.

I've also seen players win a large hand late (close to the announced end time) and then check or fold until quitting time. H&R, or just playing their cards conservatively? I tend to think the latter. If they had AA, I'm guessing that they would have been in the pot.

What does leaving early even mean? I know you are not referring to quiting while there are cards still flying do you? I can honestly say I've never left before a game broke. In casinos leave whenever you want since the games don't break. I'm the extreme as you know

I hear that. On the very few occasions where I left a home game before it was over (ran out of money - my own damn fault for playing over my head, splitting headache as the sun's about to rise - no excuse, I'm a wimp) I've felt shame.

Online:

It depends on the crowd. It depends on if I'm winning or losing. If I'm losing. Fuck you guys. I'll leave when I want. If I'm winning I'll give a "last orbit". If its a crowd of players that I'm friends with I'll normally give a last orbit anyways. If its a group that I don't know, fuck'em.

Mobile App: See Above

Casino: I don't play casinos very often (I think its been 7 or 8 years. I will leave with zero notice. I'm there for one reason.

Home Game: I'll usually give a "I'm leaving at 1, or last orbit, ect...". If I know it will be an early night (before midnight I always let the host know when he invites me. This way if he wants to invite someone that can stay longer too go ahead and do so.

I know this is an old thread and it’s been discussed to death but I’ll throw in my two cents. I’m the same with all of you when it comes to online with strangers/casinos etc. I don’t know them, I’m not there for their camaraderie, I love playing the game but it’s mostly about the money in that case so I leave when I want, no notice. If anyone complains that they want a chance to win “their money back“, you can easily explain that it ceases to be their money when it was put it in a pot.

I don’t do online with friends but at any home game I always like to see people announce that they’re leaving at a certain time earlier in the night so we know. If somebody says that they’re leaving at 10:30 and they end up winning a big hand at 10:28, no big deal. It was just their luck. It may still seem like a hit-and-run but it wasn’t. If anyone complains about winning their money back, the quote above works in this case too.

A hit-and-run implies that somebody was only there for the money. I never run into that because I’m always the host and it’s always my chips so I stay to the end, sometimes even when I’m hoping the game would break earlier because I’m exhausted. I let my friends know about the rules so they can avoid an uncomfortable situation like the one mentioned above and tell them to announce when they’re planning on leaving. We have no hard rules against hitting and running, but they’re damn sure not gonna get another invite if they do because it just implies they’re there more for the money then for their friendships.
