Imo, most cheating when money isn't the primary motivation revolves around 'winning'.
Call it ego, addiction, or simply selfishness, these types of personalities will often cheat in a wide variety of surprisingly mundane activities, even when money isn't involved at all. Golf, cards, you name it -- even solitare -- it's the thrill of the win regardless of what it takes, or the potential effect it has on self or others.
And once somebody starts down that road of dishonesty, it becomes an ever-widening chasm that takes over nearly every aspect of their life.
