Zombies vs the Apocalypse: A Trip Report (2 Viewers)

When the trip is complete, I will recap/discuss each property and location on their compliance, and the procedures used. It is not uniform.
If another closure is coming, it would be awesome if the state closed down the casinos that don't comply, leaving open the ones that take social distancing, mask compliance and sterilization of cards, chips and surfaces seriously...

Holy fuck! It just hit me. Our governor lifted the stay at home order, but said that anything than can be done from home should be... I demand to play internet poker for reals from home!

EDIT: Shut up Pokerrrr2 app, I'm not talking to you.

Wynn's poker room has remained closed. The concern about another closure has been at the forefront of our thoughts throughout, and it is clearly in the minds of the dealers we spoke to on the topic.

Personally, I feel still feel safer in Vegas than I do in a Tennessee grocery store, with a handful of exceptions. When the trip is complete, I will recap/discuss each property and location on their compliance, and the procedures used. It is not uniform.

I think more the issue is that in your Tennessee grocery store it will all be locals but in Vegas you are going to have people from all over the country picking it up and spreading it back to wherever they are from.

On the flip side, how safe do the employees feel? I think it was an AZ casino security guard that recently died and the casino was shut down again.

I would have to say the Circus Circus Casino is a dive, but I’d have to say it has one of the best Steakhouses in Vegas. I was their many many years ago and I went their for business and one of the people We were there to meet took us there and said it was one of the Best Steakhouses in Vegas. I was thinking to myself really? But it was great.

The Middle of the Strip

The Wynn room is spectacular. "In an effort to reduce high touch areas" they installed an Amazon Echo in every room. Knowing that a computer was always listening to you, analyzing you, and basically spying on you was odd, but "Alexa, dim the lights, close the sheers, and play Barry White," was the coolest thing ever. It's really easy to get spoiled like this. That is what vacations are about, getting spoiled before you have to go back to the real world. This morning it was time for us to leave, and we had Alexa play music for 10 more minutes as we checked the room for anything we may have left behind, and then picked up out bags and left the room.

That's right, the room played us out.

It chose to play Amy Winehouse's Rehab. It really was paying attention.

From the Wynn, we head far off strip again. This time to Crab Corner, a seafood restaurant owned by a former Maryland native. This place flys in live seafood daily, and examines all of it before adding it to their tank. We happened to be there as they were taking a look.

That's two lobsters right there, not one mutant lobster. They are alive.

Well, they were alive.
1594303335372.png

Lobster roll and Old Bay potato chips. While I'm living a dream-life in Vegas, it occurs to me that People like @FordPickup92 , @krafticus , @longflop , and the rest of the East Coast contingent get to eat like this daily. I'm jealous.

Then it's back to the strip. This time for a 1 night stay at the Paris. Why one night? Because that is what Caesars offered me. One free night. Not really sure why, I haven't stayed at a Caesars property in 3 years, and I am not a big gambler. We checked Mrs Zombie's account, who was in Vegas for work a few months before COVID, and she got nada.

The parking is free right now, so that's an added bonus. They haven't taken down any of the signs about parking, or uninstalled the parking ticket machines. This is obviously temporary. They have not reduced the resort fee either, so the free room costs $45 a night. If you chose to valet your car, which we would normally do, it would be an additional $24. Suddenly, I know why Julius Caesar was whacked by his senate.

The Paris has been the toughest on social distancing standards. You are not permitted to stand anywhere in sight of the tables. I settled in to play Craps - i.e. harvest $1s, and Mrs Zombie was about 10' back (up to the wall). The stickman told her that she could not observe, even from there. To be fair, there are signs everywhere saying "observers are not permitted at the table games", but 10 feet (3 meters) is too close? What, do you think we have COVID inducing vision?

Without a cheering section, Craps is just gambling. So I cashed out. Luckily, I cashed out for exactly what I bought in for, and these were still in my pocket...
1594306084179.png

We decided to wind down in a bar with a couple of martinis. After ordering, we notice that they have a mask patrol. A guy that just wanders around offering you a replacement mask, presumably because you might somehow lose the one on your face. It's Vegas. We saw a pair of pants on the sidewalk yesterday. Not new, fell-out-of-a-bag pants, but regular old used pants. I guess they just fall off unnoticed sometimes, so this guy makes sence.
1594307441064.png

Sadly, "because of COVID" the martinis were served in plastic cups. I think it's because plastic cups are cheaper than paying a busboy or a dishwasher, but whatever. Then as we are sitting at one of the socially distanced tables drinking, security comes up to us and asks us to put our masks back on.

"We're drinking though"

"I know, but we have to ask you to put your mask on between sips, bites, and drags."

I respect the rules, even if they seem dumb. At least Vegas is open. Most of the restaurants in the Paris are closed, and now I know why. Imagine eating ribs and having to replace your mask after every bite. As I imagine it, I get hungry.

Eating anywhere in the Paris feels like a hassle, and I suspect it will be the same at all Caesars properties. I want to look down into Caesar's dying eyes and hear him say "Et Tu Zombie?" We decide to pick up some wine and dinner and bring it back to our room.

We head out onto the strip, and find that mask compliance is much lower on this end of the strip. We do the mask counts again, and find that roughly 33% are wearing them. This is well below my comfort level. I mean really, are 2/3rds of you from Alabama? If I throw a piece of bacon in the air, will you dive for it like bridesmaids jumping for a bouquet?

After picking up the wine, Our dining choice was going to be Le Creperie, but when we swing by we see that they have limited hours during COVID, 9a - 2p. Even worse, they have a very limited menu, eliminating all the fruit filled crepes except banana. We find another dining option and get some crab soup, a salad (ironically a Caesars salad), and shrimp pesto to take back to the room. We enjoy dinner with a view, wine and some online poker - because we're someplace where we can play online tournaments, as we like to do.

I think it's less about COVID going back to another state, I think the concern is Covid being shipped in. However, the state relies very, very heavily on tourism, so a shutdown is not a win for the state.

I can't speak to how safe any individual employee feels, and I suspect that it varies from person to person. You can see it during each dealer push. Some dealers wear gloves and wipe down the station like they are trying to get rid of evidence. Others spray and wipe like a bored teenager.

Did the dealers think it was coming? I assume they are hoping it doesn't happen, or do they think it's not safe to be working yet?
The few I was in the position to comfortably talk to seemed... concerned. But I have worked at a buisness that was about to initiate layoffs and one that was bought out by another company. When it comes to their source of income, people tend to fear the worse, even if it's unlikely. If i was a dealer in Vegas, I would not be making any major chip purchases right now.

Well, I wouldnt say daily (lobster is expensive!) Haha but often enough that I would be sad to move some place that I couldnt access seafood as frequently as I like to. Plus, old bay on everything is the way to go!

Sounds like the stay at Wynn was smashing
I do find it a bit disappointing that mask standards are decreasing as you progress down the strip. And it sounds like Paris is super strict, cant imagine that's very enjoyable  but I get it.

Hope you enjoyed dinner and the online tourney!
Thanks for another great update!

Mask patrol is there to replace your food stained mask that is covered in more crud than your napkin - especially if you are only lowering your mask for a split second to jam food into your mouth before quickly slapping it back into place. I don't see mask patrol as a viable, long term career choice, since the position is IDIOTIC.

This is the saddest part of the trip report. :(

When I was there in March it was apparent the dealers had the inside info on what was coming down and when. I flew home 2 days before full shutdown and for the first time since I've been traveling to Vegas I was actually happy to be leaving. It was a scary time. I was even happier when 2 weeks went by and I still felt stellar.

BTW, fwiw, @PokerZombie , as always I love reading your trip reports, but I must say I miss the Brains rating system... :(

There are more layoffs on the way as well. Some locations have announced "permanent" layoffs in the next few months (as required by law), as there just isn't the same level of tourism to necessitate a full staff.

So glad you guys found my missing pants, please drop them in the nearest post!

I'm embarressed to admit that I am yet to pick crabs this summer. My neighbor wanted to split a half bushel last weekend, but never buy crabs on a holiday weekend, they are twice the price and half as heavy. Although, I have finished off a costco sized old bay canister. Try it on corn on the cob, you'll never go back.

As always, an outstanding trip report! Thank you to you two for being our Man (and Woman) on The Street!

The sheer amount of time spent to put together these multi-installment trip reports is amazing. And they are virtually real time. And you do things like go back and get a picture of the guy handing out masks with giant tweezers.

Well done, you two.

I must say I miss the Brains rating system... :(
Except for this.

Also,

So glad you guys found my missing pants, please drop them in the nearest post!
Were they pants?

...or shorts?

:sneaky:

Saw this tweet just tonight. I read one of the Counties will be where Vegas is and the other so far announced is where Reno was in. They will be announcing more counties in Nevada tomorrow.

Going Home

All good things come to an end. Our flight out is at 4 pm, so we sleep in as much as possible, then play the game of arranging dirty clothes and clean clothes. Yes, we still have clean clothes. We are both the types to overpack for a trip, in case something gets accidently dirty. You never know, food drips, excessive sweat, stepping in a puddle, and you either buy something new or look homeless. I'll pack extra and avoid the other options. Hell, I could go to a nudist resort, and I would still pack a suitcase.

So we play this game of moving and balancing until checkout time, then we pack up the car and head across the street to the Bellagio. The plan is to go to Lago, as we have redeemed a free cocktail with the purchase of lunch. Unfortunately we get there to find out that Lago now has modified hours due to COVID and is closed.

Well played COVID, one last shot before we go. Instead, we go to Noodles. It was fantastic!

1594391238497.png

I look forward to trying to replicate the second dish, sweet and spicy noodles.

After that, we return the car, get on the shuttle, and head back to the airport. Once again, people are nearly 100% compliant with mask usage. The biggest hole in compliance was on the lower end of the strip. Basically where you see a lot more youngsters and yard-long drinks, you see fewer masks. That's probably why Planet Hollywood is still closed. I wouldn't want to go back to work, knowing my primary customer is stupid enough to kill me.

The flight from Vegas to Denver goes smoothly. Some airplane poker. Mrs Zombie crushed it with a overbet on 3's over Kings, to my 3's over Queens. Everyone was masked up the entire flight. The plane stopped and all but 7 got off, taking on new set of passengers, but the same flight crew in the cabin (who absolutely adored the table). The flight to Nashville was peppered with announcements to remember to put your mask back on. A shout out to @Redbelly's wife (who if I recall, is a stewardess), if she ever has to deal with a cabin full of adult 2 year olds.

Once in Nashville the walk to baggage claim we see mask compliance drop. Precipitously. We head out to the parking garage, and see 9 people cram into the elevator, none wearing their mask. I'd like to believe that maybe they all came together, but I don't think you can fit a bus in the parking garage.

Maybe COVID in Vegas stays in Vegas? :bag:

GREAT trip report! Informative and entertaining. You rarely get both in one. I enjoyed it. Thanks!

"A shout out to @Redbelly's wife (who if I recall, is a stewardess), if she ever has to deal with a cabin full of adult 2 year olds."
- She puts up with an adult 2 year old every day! Thank God for me!
We were ships passing in the night! I rolled into LAS last night for the end of my trip! Just boarding a flight to DEN! Glad you are home safe!

Wrap Up

The oddest thing about Vegas in the time of COVID is that every business is taking precautions, but none are uniform. Below are the steps taken to ensure your safety. If you plan, or wish to plan a trip to Las Vegas, and COVID precautions are a concern (either pro or con), the following list it my attempt to make as comprehensive a list as possible, based on our single, multi-stop trip. Just for fun, I am adding the Zombie Survival rating system. If this were an actual Zombie apocalypse, a Survival rating of 1 means "little chance to avoid being contaminated" and 5 means "almost as safe as staying home".

Southwest Airlines
Boarding is done is groups of 10, instead of the typical 30 on each side of the pylon. They board each group of 10 and dont start boarding the next 10 until the previous group is clear of the gangway. This maintains social distancing.

No alcohol is served, but they serve water and a salty snack. They say this is to minimize crew contact. I think it is to save money. Either way, it sucks, and the crew is still making a trip to deliver the snacks, another trip to deliver the water, and at least 2 trips to collect empties. Basically, they save just one exposure opportunity by not taking orders.

Flights are booked so the middle seat can be left open. This made flying reasonably comfortable. I cannot remember the last time we had a flight to Vegas that didn't leave me or Mrs Zombie in the middle seat, so this is a huge win, and almost makes up for the missing in-flight vodka. Almost.

Attendants made sure that everyone stayed masked up in flight, unless they were eating/drinking. Sometimes the passengers needed to be reminded multiple times. It appears that some people really believe the virus is just a big, worldwide hoax, presumably by big mask manufacturers. Oddly, these people choose to fly despite the "driving is slower" hoax perpetrated by big airlines.

Upon arrival at the gate. Everyone stands and packs the isles. You just sat through hours of extra elbow room in the name of safety, but ignore any concept of social distancing because you need to get off the plane about 15 seconds sooner.

Survival Rating: 3. It could be 4 if you remain in your seat and don't join the herd.

South Point
Security is at every entrance to the Casino, including the hotel elevators making sure you are wearing a mask. If you dont have a mask, an individually wrapped mask will be handed to you.

Temperature is checked by a TIC (thermal imaging camera) when standing in line for hotel registration, but not the casino. We went back to the front desk to ask a question, and had to be temperature checked again. You know, in case I developed a fever in the last 3 minutes.

Table games have reduced capacity for social distancing. Every other slot machine was turned off. One day we played a little 9-6 Jacks or Better video poker (9-6 is the best Jacks or better payout for the player, with a house advantage of just 0.46%). The next day it was "socially distanced", turned off.

Poker room: Drinks are allowed at the table, no food. 5 player max. Cards are cleaned every dealer push. They are cleaned so often that some dealers had issues with cards sticking together as the card's coating appeared to be getting wiped off. It did not seem to alter the appearance though. Don't lick your chips. They have a disinfectant that is supposed to last 90 days, though the guy doing the cleaning sounded skeptical.

Survival Rating: 3. Masks and social distancing are in effect.

Wynn
Temperature is checked with a TIC at every entrance to the property. If you are too warm, you are asked to stand to the side for about 10 seconds, and they check you again with a hand-held temperature gun. It was 107 outside when we were there, and we frequently walked a mile or more in the heat. So we were tagged as "feverish" a couple of times. The 10 second timeout was sufficient time to cool off each encounter.

Each entrance to the property, plus the elevators to the hotel had a guy confirming mask usage. If you did not have a mask, one was provided using a very long set of tweezers. A mask untouched by human hands, and you could be distanced from the guy giving it to you.

In the room, they had 2 masks, a respectable sized bottle of hand sanitizer, and 2 individually wrapped sanitizing towelettes, in case you didn't trust their cleaning procedures. They have an Amazon Echo in the room so you could control lights, curtains, AC, and music without touching anything. It would have been effective, if I didn't like it so much that I gave Alexa a big hug.

Poker Room Closed. I respect the decision, but if it wasn't for poker, I wouldn't even be in Vegas.

Table Games had plexiglass barriers between players, 8 to a craps table, 3 or 4 for Blackjack or other games pitched on a semicircle.

The pool had limited access to prevent overcrowding. Security patrolled with 6' pool noodles to maintain distances. I requested paper masks for Mrs Zombie and I so we wouldn't get suntan lotion stains on our silk masks. They complied, using a pair of tongs to hand the masks to us. Masks are only recommended at the pool, not mandated, but when walking around I would wear one anyway. Pool security appeared vigilant, so if you are hoping for a hook-up at the pool, you might need to do it from a distance.

In the bars, they give you a placemat for your mask, so it doesn't have to touch the table. Classy move, Wynn. Tables are distanced. I'm glad COVID isn't spread by cleavage, because that would be a shame to be covered up.

If you touched a pen, it was yours for life. Sign for a drink, hotel check-in, or make your mark to pay for food, and you got a pen in a wrapper that they would never touch. We bought a lot of drinks, so we won't have to buy any new pens for quite a while.

Survival rating 5. Drops to 4.5 if you insist on playing any game that involves chips.

Ellis Island
No free masks at the door, no temperature checks. Most slot machines were on, but had signs indicating social distancing in action. It was apparent some signs had been moved. Given the small size of the property, it is difficult to stay 6 feet (2 meters) apart.

Survival rating 2. The only saving grace is that this is a locals type joint, and locals seem more compliant than visitors when it comes to mask rules.

Sahara
No door security. Dealers at tables required mask usage. Poker tables had shields between players, allowing 6 max. I believe the shields to be limited in effectiveness, as poker players tend to hunch forward, beyond the scope of the shield.

Survival Rating 3, but only because there is almost nobody here.

Venetian
I don't recall seeing TIC temperature checks at the front door, but I think they were there. Poker tables were 5 max, and you had to wear a mask and sanitize your hands before being dealt in, which was the best poker protection beyond masks that I've seen.

Survival Rating 4.5. I'd go to 5 if I could remember door security.

Circus Circus
No mask security, and many people wore them around their chins. Hand sanitiser stations were the only step actually taken by the casino. Other than Mrs Z and I, nobody used them, possibly ever. It was about as clean as a carnival that rolled into town.

Survival Rating 1. I give them props for holding onto a theme.

Paris (Caesars Entertainment property)
No security at the door, but they were patrolling to make sure you had one on, even if you were sat down to have a drink. Temperature checks via TIC at the hotel check-in. No spectators permitted at table games. Over half the eating establishments were closed.

Survival Rating 5, but the price of safety is too high here.

Bellagio (MGM Property)
Masks available at the door. Social distancing in effect. We did not make it to the poker room since we had a flight to catch.

Survival Rating Unknown. We simply did not spend enough time here to develop an informed opinion.

Overall
If I knew pretrip what I know now, I would still have done this trip. I would skip a few stops, but I feel I was safer in Vegas than I am in Tennessee. Not everyone takes the mask seriously, but it was easy enough to for the Zombies to stay safe. Stay out of crowds, even while waiting to cross the street. Avoid anyone not wearing a mask like the plague... because they may have the plague.

We will be happy to try to answer any questions via this thread or PM. Wear a mask and stay safe!
