I'm new here, just now evaluating various chip options. I haven't even bought any chips yet besides a few samples. But I'm already thinking ahead to storage options and solutions. I'm weighing designing a couple of custom Apache cases, (one for tourney chips and one for cash chips) vs. other in home storage options. I was messaging with another member who mentioned he was going to design a custom map chest. I have a son who does beautiful wood working and builds furniture. So I starting browsing the interwebs looking for some ideas I could use to help him design and build a cabinet for me. Then I ran across THIS very inexpensive cabinet at Home Depot!

Interior dimensions of the drawers are 17.2 x 12.32 inches. Based on another similar narrower cabinet HERE, I believe the height of the narrower drawers is 2.67 inches. Would these drawers not be just about perfect for 8 Chipco trays with 39mm chips? Trying to find exact dimensions, and not having luck at any vendor sites, but I did find a post here where someone stated that Chipco trays were 8 1/8 x 3 inches and 2 1/2 inches tall with chips. Can anyone confirm these numbers for me? If they are correct, then this thing is GOLDEN for holding 8 trays / 800 chips in each of the top six drawers.

It's not a beautiful piece of furniture that would become a family heirloom, but it certainly seems like it could be functional and inexpensive, while I wait for him to craft something nicer for me. And I thought others might be interested in seeing this as well.

I'd want to take a look at the drawer bottom strength and construction, since that would be ~25 pounds in each one.

Good point. Drawer bottoms are MDF. First just trying to confirm if the dimensions will even work.

Man, I'd just save the $$$ and throw the chips in a cardboard box (in racks) until your son completes the project. Or let your son hold onto the chips so he can custom fit the drawers to your set.

I can never have enough storage around my place. I would put this to use for other things as well, even after I had a nicer storage chest for my chips. Like I said, I'm just looking for input as to whether the dimensions of this will work for containing 8 Chipco trays. I'm planning to order some, but don't have any in hand right now.

I would just stick with Apache cases for now. They will gladly store your chips until your son gets his job completed, and then give you something to use so your sets can travel should the need arise.

I have one of these carts and took measurements of it for another thread one time. Found it:

They are cheaply made, nothing fancy. I glued one of the drawers back together the other day after my daughter dropped it. I think it's probably stronger than before now, since there's no glue from the factory. We use ours for markers and coloring books and stuff for the kids, and it's fine for that.

Yeah, I busted out the drawer bottoms in the first dresser I used for storing chips, long ago....

Thanks! OK, I'll pass then on this. Actually just got off the phone with my son. He loved my idea and we plan to get started right away on designing something. He wants to start a small custom furniture building business anyway, so this could be an opportunity for him to come up with something interesting. I will probably start a new thread to get thoughts from others of you here on functionality, since I'm a rookie and you guys will probably have lots of ideas that I would never think about. Once we build a prototype, this is something that he might be able to build for others of you on here, if there's some demand.
